I’m not Asian, but I’ve heard that they are. Is it true? It seems unfair.
Any group of students ethnic or otherwise which consistently scores high on SAT and has high GPA is over represented on college campuses. So the answer to your question is … yes.
Depends on how far back you want to step. As a whole, Asians are supremely successful in HS grad rates and getting bachelors – that’s w/o a doubt. Those that claim anti-asian bias cite the higher avg SAT/ACTs of Asians in the top schools. It’s not a simple answer. For very selective schools, they are at a statistical disadvantage b/c such a large portion of slots go to recruited athletes – and Asians are underrepresented in that sub group.
Affirmative Action and race in admissions is discussed here.
If well-meaning but uninformed parents have pushed their kids into over-represented ECs such as violin, tennis, math club, yes. If kids have been coached by parents to achieve the A+ at any cost, yes; the teachers will not write LORs vouching for the student’s curiosity and helpfulness in class. An interesting kid who plays trombone and gets good marks in history and who is in the film club and writes a good essay about restoring vintage bicycles and whose teachers will say they make the classroom a better place for all, if Asian, will have zero disadvantage.
Playing trombone and getting good marks in history is great. But the reality is…50% of students in US who go into engineering majors drop out from engineering after their first year, because they can’t handle Math, Physics, Chemistry ect. Writing beautiful essays does not mean you will make the world a better place.
And at some schools, they are a desired URM.
At many LAC’s there are relatively few Asian and Asian American students.
TomSr, that’s good to know.
@rollout Not an appropriate comment but I guess we’re in a new era now.
