Why should one believe your lens is the only one that is calibrated correctly?

Colleges have adopted policies to boost the enrollment of underrepresented minorities. Colleges have adopted policies to seek to boost the enrollment of lower SES students. Colleges have NOT stated that the underrepresented minorities should come excusively from lower SES students.

Again, it is not because policies do not satisfy your myopic criteria that they are dysfunctional.

Did I ever say it was? And have you ever bothered to ask yourself that question?

Leaving us with supposedly disadvantaged minorities coming from households that on average earn more than supposedly advantaged minorities. Yup, not dysfunctional at all

Umm yes… When and if Asians need protection and/or artificial help to advance as a people then perhaps things will change.

You seem to be operating under the impression that America is operating at the individual level. How many Asians are put out due to AA? 1? 10? 100? When the balance of your race is in need of help be assured America will help. Until then, you are own your own…

The American dream isn’t about equal outcomes but equal chances. Historically URMS haven’t had this and AA was designed to bring URMs back to a level playing field which they are not at. I don’t recall Asians as a whole having this disadvantage in America…

In fact… It seems in California where AA is not in effect Asians are overtaking even whites… You think life is unfair now just wait until Asians are outperforming the majority… Then it’s going to get unfair…

Sorry, calimama, I hate talking about the UCs too, but the anti-AA side won’t let the phantom UC “evidence” die, so I feel I can reach them by using UCs as an example.

fab,
I don’t know whether the end of racial preferences caused the UCs’ problems. Perhaps the Black and Latino voters in CA might not have much incentive to support them anymore, so it could be the reason. Maybe the majority of CA voters don’t see the UCs as an option for their families anymore, so they don’t give a rip about their funding or survival.

What is the evidence that HYPS are “dysfunctional” at all, let alone because of their AA policies?

Calimom and shrinkwrap,
I am astounded at how you address woeishe. I did not find his post particularly “not ready for prime time” or up to “par” He is a student. Let him speak in his own voice. We can judge him on our own. He is entitled to his own opinion.
It looked like you were slapping him down because he said something you disagree with or find “traitorous.”
Makes me Feel Sick.
And sorry to have fed the fires here.

performersmom: oh please spare me the faux outrage and condescension. does it help your stomach if i say that i don’t think YOU’RE ready for prime time either? i’ve read snippets of your comments (most of them are too long for me to be bothered), and i’m similarly unimpressed.

Mokusatsu, I do not believe Asian kids are more talented because they are Asian. I think they are more talented because of Tiger parents. Talent is 99% hard work and 1% innate ability. I also believe that any race or culture can pick up Tiger parenting, should it chooses to.

Fabrizio, I invite you to read the full statement by Stanford’s former president. Given your prodigious capacity to read and dissect voluminous documents, I hope you will read every word of it. It goes a long way to frame the debate correctly and eliminate the need to bring in extraneous considerations.

"I am astounded at how you address woeishe. I did not find his post particularly “not ready for prime time” or up to “par” He is a student. "

I said "And not too eloquently I might add! Your posts are not up to CC “par”, at least not for the parents forum. "

Wow! I learned “up to par” on the student forums! Do you SEE how they talk to each other? I get all my best stuff from them ( and claim it as continuing education!), and I try to NEVER post on “their” forums. They would smack me down in a second! Trust me! And I’d have it coming, although sometimes, some of them will defend me (thanks guys!). They know I love them, especially the kids in the African American students forum. And I know most of them can hold their own, (at least outside of “high school life”, yikes!). Learning how to hold your own in a debate might be the best thing this forum has to offer high schoolers.

But if you come to the parents forum, you should “bring it”.

But really, I do not “disagree”, and thought I was respecting, and asking for clarification and support of his opinion. And woeishe, if I was out of line, I apologize…but I still want an answer.,

That is a very interesting viewpoint. Perhaps one that HYPS recognize, as well. Why should HYPS reward applicants who have “Tiger parents?” Perhaps HYPS prefer diamonds in the rough that they can mold into people who reflect their values and characteristics, not those of the applicants’ parents.
