Are "senior dues" legal?

I go to a public school, and my school is making me pay the senior dues in order to fund some “activities,” while we still have to pay addition money for our own prom ticket, field trip ticket, cap/gown and other things. I am really not interested in any of the stuff they planned for us, and would gladly not participate in any of them to avoid paying them any more money. However, the rumor is that if I don’t pay the due, they may not allow me to graduate. That just doesn’t seem right. I mean, my high school diploma isn’t contingent on me paying an arbitrary fee is it? Are they legally allowed to do that?

Wow you should really explain that to them. Usually senior dues are for stuff like Yearbook and Senior Trip. If you don’t want those you shouldn’t have to pay. And your diploma shouldn’t require $$…It doesn’t look logical legally to me.

They cannot withhold your diploma for not paying senior dues, at least they can’t do so legally.

yeah, they can’t withhold your diploma if you’ve completed the coursework. you might not get to ‘walk’, but if you don’t care, don’t pay the bill

Yeah, at least in my state, you have a right to a free and equal education, basically meaning that you have a right to know your grades and get your diploma, no matter what.

Even if you don’t pay you’ll still graduate. You just probably won’t get to be in the graduation ceremony. That’s perfectly legal.

^ What he said basically.
