^I know someone who went to Virginia Tech but he flunked out because he “couldn’t handle the pressure” :(

Why do so many people hate UCs?

Just wondering.

I really thought Columbia was in Manhattan.

^^I think that’s subjective.

However, some individuals prefer more intimate classroom settings. From what I’ve been able to comprehend, UC’s are immense campuses that tend to focus more on graduate students, something that may not be perceived as preferable by prospective students.

^^Harlem is in Manhattan :p

I thought it was a seperate borough. I’m lost.

Nope

There are 5 boroughs in NYC. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island.

Harlem is part of Manhattan. :)

Because almost everyone (a lot of subpar students) in California ends up going there. Its full of Asians and Whites, and they mostly tend to stick to their own cliques.
UC system is failing in academics/resources due to the failing California budget.

And yet Berkeley STILL gets international renown over half the ivy leagues…how pretentious! I get really irritated at the folks at China when I visit. Seriously, Berkeley isn’t what it seems to be on the Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankings! Its a school where non-URM people with 3.5 GPA and 1900 SATs can get into!!

@John117 - That’s not really true. Only for people who live in California. I live in Missouri and a lot of people applied and a lot of people got rejected.

These are terrible reasons. Especially the white/Asian pigeonholing and stereotyping…and YOU are Asian.

Why do you care so much about prestige?

So?!?!?!?

Maybe its because I live in California, but the fact that UCs are state biased is another reason I don’t like it (even thought I live in California, I prefer other people from other states and countries have just as equal an opportunity to get in).

^No, its not not a terrible reason. I really don’t like the cliques. When I visited, thats how it seemed. All the Asians were grouped together and blacks to themselves. It just didn’t feel right. The fact that I’m Asian also adds that I don’t just want to be “another Asian who goes to UC” as the case is always so in my school.

Because I’m from CA, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal anyway. Around 60 people are going to UCs…I just don’t want to see them again.

Berkeley for grad school? Ehh…maybe. But still…I have my reservations.

Every state will have lots of kids going to their GASP state schools.

You just made very sweeping generalizations about the universities.

^Uhh…which is why I hate UCs…inclusively I don’t like the concept of state schools, but I like picking on UC. =P

I had a 2 paragraph rant on UCs and then lost it within the stratosphere of cyberspace. ■■■.

But seriously, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the title of this thread was UC SYSTEM! UC SYSTEM! UC SYSTEM!

Guess I’m not original or anything. :(

Wow…why?

LOL, all state schools are biased towards their state, and all schools have selective cliques within them. Your hate towards UC’s would be the same hate towards any other state’s state schools. Just FY ****ing I, Duke has 32490823489 Cliques, lol.

^Thanks for your input, but I think I’ll fit in perfectly at Duke ![]()
My visits have been very pleasant.

I live in California and I hate UCs because everyone thinks they are so intelligent and smart for getting into there when it’s pretty goddamn easy. Usually these people I have found to be lazy and just meet the minimum for almost anything. They have an “oh-as-long-as-I-get-by” sort of attitude. People at my school are exactly like this and it disgusts me. They act as if they have become gods upon admission to any UC school including UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara which we all know are pretty much useless schools. The admissions to these schools are absolutely ridiculous and whoever is in charge of UC is trying to make it look like they admit only the best or cream of the crop…but seriously have you seen some of the people there. Top 5% - top 5% - top 5% - OH PLEASE some dumbass from my school who had three d’s and an F got into UC Irvine. They only admit people based on the school instead of overall which is pretty *ing dumb since some schools are pretty subpar. It’s a waste of tax money on these people who may be the top at their school but just because of that it doesn’t mean they are ready for college; it just means their school was incredibly *ty and these people end up failing in college such as this one girl I knew from a downtown LA school. She was admitted to UCB as #1 in her school but failed freshman year in college. definitely this policy and admission system needs to be changed immediately and don’t get me started on the financial aid and classroom sizes. Three words? Pieces of ****. People also hang out in cliques and it’s similar to high school but they try to keep it lowkey but we all know who can go to which parties and who can join which clubs or sororities. The people here also can be rude and quite prideful. I’m sorry but HYPSM pride FTW

oh yeah most UCers have ****ty SAT scores. some girl with 1400 something SAT got in this year & one with 1700 something last year tooLOLOLOLOLOL

Ok, after going back and reading through this thread, I got annoyed and now I wish to assert my original post.

As a disclaimer, I would like to commence by saying that my feelings regarding state schools contradict many of yours. As someone who will be attending a state school come Fall 2010, I see no reason why they should be frowned upon or be seen as inferior, second-rate options to private colleges.

That being said, this is for you, UC system.

You think you’re so special, so amazing, so wonderful because you proudly proclaim to cater to ONLY the top 12.5% of California high school graduating seniors. This would be great and all if you were a LAC, but as a public system of higher education, it is unfair and biased of you to serve only a select group of students. While I understand that there is a 2nd-rate CSU system right below the UC system, the CSU schools are frowned upon because YES, many of them are that bad with their horrendously low graduation rates, overfilled classes, and lack of personalized attention.

It is extremely pretentious of you to snub well-qualified applicants as you fervidly hunt down 4.7 GPAs and 2300 SAT scores through means such as the EXTREMELY stupid ELC program. It is ridiculous how this year, students who worked their asses off in high school were getting waitlisted or even rejected from mid-tier UCs such as Santa Barbara, Davis, and Santa Cruz.

It makes me sick that you accepted the same 30-something students from my graduating class of approximately 560 students and rejected the rest of them; rejected amazingly talented applicants in favor of Perfect Patty who applied to all 9 UC campuses, was accepted to all 9, and certainly cannot attend all 9. Hey UC Davis… did you know that Perfect Patty is using you as a SAFETY? Why not give her spot to poor Hardworking Hannah (god this alliteration is obnoxious, my apologies), who may not be a ROBOT, but is still absolutely dying to go to UC Davis because it has been her dream school since 9th grade? And just because her GPA is 2 tenths below a 4.0, you deem her a sub-par candidate and choose instead to waitlist her?? You are not Stanford. You are not Brown, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, or Columbia. Without Berkeley and UCLA, you are virtually NOTHING.

Until you figure out a way to maintain a high standard of academic quality while simultaneously battling budget cuts, you are in no position to tout yourselves as one of the top public school systems in the country. Reduce your class sizes, give your undergraduates who are paying ridiculous amounts of tuition every year some personalized attention as opposed to shoving them in a huge lecture hall with a TA who can barely speak English, and make it easier to graduate in 4 years as opposed to 6, and then we’ll talk.

I hate you, UC system, always and forever.

EDIT: You people who claim that the UCs are easy to get into are delusional and need to do some serious fact-checking. Check the admissions statistics for this year… it was NOT that easy.
