Are there any universities you hate?

^^A little too crudely written, but I agree nonetheless.

Arizona State. If I have to stay instate, I would much rather go to UofA, even though Tucson is a crappy place. ASU is full of idiots. Even my dad hates it, and he went to law school there lol.

Outside of that, probably UC-Berkeley.

Damn, well Berkeley is off my list.

^Because of what people here said? Really?

^^Someone’s a little bit GROUCHY tonight.

Sometimes I sorta hate the school that rejected me :(.

I guess I’m supposed to hate Caltech too? And maybe UofM, but I definitely don’t hate UofM.

Yes, hate Caltech. jk, you’re going to MIT, a sizeable tradeoff.

I can’t hate the university that rejected me as much as I want to (which is MIT). I even have the whole thread on the MIT forum…

I really hope MIT accepts me for grad school. I’ll try to fix myself and make myself worthy enough to get MIT’s attention. I wish to make use of every opportunity at Duke :)

If I don’t get into MIT, I won’t hate them since I’ve had a soft spot for them since I was 8, but I will work my ass off to get to their grad school.

I don’t HATE the University of Texas (it’s an awesome school etc etc), but everyone at my school glorifies it and focuses on being in the “top 8%” just so they can gain that acceptance. I am maybe one of ten kids in my 515 class that are seriously considering a liberal arts college/ivy league. Keep in mind that my school is highly competitive and has like a billionzillion fancy awards. Plus, I have to apply since I’m already in and it’s a financial safety. Although the whole going-to-same-college-with-half-of-my-high-school- class thing kinda freaks me out if I do happen to go there. :/

^Ugh, I would love to go to UT, but I don’t think I stand a chance because of that rule…

I hate Duke. I hate their athletic program. And I don’t know one person who goes or went there that doesn’t have a super-inflated ego. And it’s not that I hate anyone with an ego, but Dukies take it to the next level.

As for my two cents on state schools, I don’t hate them because they’re not as competitive as the Ivies. That’s exactly what they’re there for. Sure kids that work a lot less than I do get in, but that’s fine because they won’t be taking my spot. Why should I care who else goes there, I’ll still get better grades than them. There are a lot of schools that I would rather go to than Penn State, but if that’s where I end up, I’m OK with it. Plenty of PSU grads have gone on to be very successful.

Duke, but more specifically their basketball team. My mother went to the University of Maryland. It’s how I was raised. :D

I guess I should say Duke too. My family is from NC and I was raised a Tar Heels fan :D

John, Berkeley’s international renown has nothing to do with the undergrad body, in my opinion. It has to do with the fact it’s truly one of the best places for research.

You have to understand the faculty there come from ultra high-profile academic backgrounds - they have nothing to do with CA or public education. They can be stars who graduated close to the top of MIT, won the Putnam as undergrads [multiple times] or were highly exceptional stars from Russia, etc, etc. They can be people who were there at the very moments some of the most groundbreaking work in a field was ever done, and oversaw the rise of those ideas in modern research.

So really, the international renown is well-deserved.

Frankly, at any renowned school, there are some talented academic students, but that’s about it. There may be fewer utterly subpar students at some other schools, but they have totally different standards for admission - Berkeley is bound to accept a large number of CA students, so it’s bound to some mediocrity in the undergrad body. I think that’s the least pretentious it gets, I don’t think Berkeley claims tons of undergrad prestige - it claims academic prestige, and it’s right on there.

The folks of Asian background probably don’t care about the name used to massage an undergrad’s ego - they care that engineering at Berkeley rocks, and that academics are super strong.

Bottom line is a school can be great even if its admissions system sucks in some ways, and this is the case with Berkeley [and lots of other schools].

I don’t “hate” any college–that would be kind of…stupid.

Though to mildly contradict myself, I wouldn’t attend Yale or Harvard (pretending I could actually get in) though.

I have a huge suspicion that everyone there would irritate the hell out of me and I’d be raging drunk with a growing cocaine, Vikes, clonazepam, Percs, Xanax, Diazepam and shroom dependency by the end of the first semester.

@mathboy: Yeah, I know, I know =P its all a joke anyway, don’t take my stupid words too seriously =P
Its just that every jerk in our school goes to Berkeley, even my ex…I’m just waaaay too biased, so pay no heed to what I say about UC!

I’m not sure what Duke has over Berkeley in terms of academics. The engineering at Berkeley is top notch. BSD was created at Berkeley. I am also given to understand that physics and mathematics at Berkeley are also good.

Washington State

Go HUSKIES! :p

^^ And I know that Berkeley has outstanding history and business programs as well.
