Yeah, I heard JHU is basically in the projects. Plus, I looked into a few HBCUs and what’s with the seriously low requirements?

Cornell because Columbia is so much better.

I have, shall I say, issues, with MIT. I don’t like how it is treated as the be all and end all of higher education. Yes, its graduate business, engineering, and natural science programs are excellent. Yes, its undergraduate business, engineering, and natural science programs are excellent, but at the same time, MIT is not balanced. It doesn’t have, for example, a law school. It is not up to par with its peers in the humanities and social sciences. It’s not a bad school, by any means, but for a number of fields of study, there are greener pastures up the Charles River, or across a single state line.

^ It has some excellent social science programs as well (e.g., political science and economics, especially the latter).

I always thought that was Harvard. . . .

Perhaps it’s just a matter of perspective. I go to a high school filled with people interested in medicine/engineering/math. I am not one of those people.

^I’d agree that it differs from place to place. Talking to my HS’s class of 2011, I’d call Stanford #1.

It’s so sad seeing the UCs being criticized so much in this thread, especially on their admission policies. The vast majority of selective colleges in U.S. have quite subjective admission policies, and I see the UCs as a more objective option for those (like me) who don’t particularly like to be judged subjectively, or who still wants to go to a renowned school but don’t quite have good subjective records (like me). I also applaud them for not trying to get around the anti-affirmative laws of California.

I certainly don’t want them to cut down on their class sizes. That would without a doubt induce them to make more subjective admission policies. Less individual attention is worth it.

Siena University - they keep sending me annoying notifications
Oh and I used to LOATH UC Berkeley until I actually visit the campus. Just fell in love with it, and will be attending this fall >: )

You hate UC berkeley?

I do not hate any.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

And its humanities/social science programs are a lot stronger than what many people believe

whooosh , a lot of people on here hate Duke. =P
though, i still root for them in games and such… maybe I’m still living in the glory days of J.J. Redick?

haha, nahh, my brother would kill me if I didn’t fully support Duke Athletics

I personally wouldn’t attend Harvard, Rice, UT, or MIT.
imo, Harvard comes off as snobby, Rice is where most of the people who are aiming for something better than UT are dying to get into and it’s too close to home:), UT is where the top 8% of my graduating class will attend (no offense, but I don’t really want to see the same people for the next four years … change it up a bit … :P), and I’m not THAT interested in math/science.

hey! Why do you guys hate on Duke? I need a reason here! Yall just hating because its an academic powerhouse AND an athletic demon? =P

^
Watch out! Eeeeek

I’ve never seen so many people hate Duke until now.

For me, I’m neutral.
I just don’t like schools that require certain number of SAT II’s or cost too much :D

■■■■■ I live extremely close to Duke, and will be applying when the time comes. I have nothing against it personally (just got done with a high school medical program there which was so awesome!) but here’s a few of the reasons some of the people here hate Duke:

1) It’s known to be full of yankees (cough people from New Jersey cough (p.s. I never really got where the NJ thing came from… I’m not originally from this region btw))
2) It’s known as a breeding ground for frat boy parties
3) It has basically a “rich blue blood” social stigma to it…VERY preppy. Place it in the same category as Vandy, etc. for preppiness
4) ‘Go to Duke if all you want to do is party but seem like you actually did something’

Again, I have nothing against the school (although I would rather go somewhere much further from home) but these are a few of the things I’ve heard around here.

Yeah I hate Duke ATHLETICS. Academically, that school is in my top 10.

Baylor. They sent me dozens of emails telling me to apply there, so annoying.

I’m actually kind of surprised by all the Duke hate. I don’t love the school, but I certainly respect it

Probably Michigan, because I’m from Illinois. “Muck Fichigan, Ann Arbor is a whore”

I hate all of the pretentious colleges i.e. Harvard, Yale, Amherst, Dartmouth, and especially Princeton! even the Fiske Guide says that many African-Americans and females in Princeton feels second class because of the white males’ attitude and treatment…though it’s academics is wonderful, the social atmosphere is a complete and total crap
