Are there TV shows you watch for the "wrong" reason.

I love the show Grimm even though I have ZERO interest in fantasy/monster stories. I watch it for the relationships/romance. I have friends that are fantasy lovers and they are almost offended ( lol) that I watch it for this reason. A co- worker told me this was the " wrong" reason to watch it, which I though was hilarious.

Any shows you like despite not being all that Intersted in the central theme of the show?

One of my daughters watches “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” She has said she’d like to be rich like them, and I guess that’s probably one of the intended goals of the show. I watch it with her and I watch it because I’m fascinated by the psychological and sociological aspects: How can people reveal so much of themselves on TV? How much of what they are revealing is actually real? What does it do to one’s family dynamics when the sisters and mom discuss their brother’s (son’s) problems in public? I’m guessing my reasons to watch are the “wrong” ones.

Not a tv show, but I loved listening to Dr. Laura on XM radio. I do not agree with a good bit of her advice, but I love hearing real peoples stories, and I like getting mad at Dr. Laura when she cut people off and doesn’t let them finish their thought. I think she makes some good points, but many things are only black or white with her; there is never a gray area. Still, I look forward to being in the car when she is on!

I used to love Grimm! W and I were really bummed when it got cancelled. I did enjoy the relationship between Monroe and Rosalee, and Nick and his mom (for the few episodes she was on!). Both W and I hated Juliette and tended to fast-forward whenever she was on :))

Probably Chicago Fire comes closest to a show that I watch for the wrong reasons. I find all the fire scenes and paramedic rescues to be boring/repetitive, and fast forward through them.

I hate myself for watching every episode of Fuller House on Netflix. Really, watching it and thinking, close your laptop and do something else, anything else. It is so completely superficial, lighter than helium, badly constructed characters, and poorly written too. But I continue to hate-watch it and will watch the next season as well, because the nostalgia is so strong: it reminds me of when I used to watch the first few years of Full House, when I was too unsophisticated to realize it was completely superficial, lighter than helium, poorly written. It’s like that ratty old baby blanket that used to be my D17’s comfort item, can’t let go of that either.

GRIMM SPOILER ALERT.

@anomander I was team Adalind! Lol. Redemption is one of my favorite tropes and I loved that they got them together. Hated, hated , hated Juliette

DH and I are watching Poldark currently. It’s such a soap opera. I swoon every time Ross takes off his shirt, and DH says everytime Elizabeth appears on screen, “She’s soooo beautiful, even if she is dumb.” (He always did love a brunette, I think the redhead - Drizmelda - is gorgeous.)

NCIS for Mark Harmon. Not sure that is a “wrong reason”, though.

@mathmom, Demelza. :slight_smile:

@snowball, I used to listen to Dr. Laura many years ago. I liked the fact that she insisted on the primacy of the needs of the children, never mind the desires of their feckless parents. But gradually she became more and more political, and I couldn’t listen to her any more.

I watched Grimm for the same reason. And definitely team Adalind.

I watch a lot of dumb shows because they help me fall asleep.

I also watched Burn Notice for the romance ( not too Intersted in the spy stuff) which my brother thought was crazy because the lead was almost asexual most of the time… oh but the way he would look at her!

@mathmom, Poldark would be worth watching if it were nothing but scenes of Ross on horseback.

I think my wife is in love with Trevor Noah, so maybe that’s an example.

I watch men’s tennis for hawt boys in sweat soaked shorts.

I watch women’s tennis for a similar reason.

^Thats the only why my H doesn’t complain I’m always watching the tennis.

I watch some of the “Real Housewives” franchises to enjoy how incredibly rich people can screw up their lives, do nothing but bicker and scream at each other over nothing. Schadenfreude. But I like seeing their clothes, homes and vacations.

Don’t judge, but I like the Walking Dead because of the characters not because I like gory stuff. The zombie part of it is so dumb, they could be mutant bumblebees instead and I’d still watch it because of the characters (although it hasn’t been the same since Glenn departed). That’s another thread - “what TV shows have you stopped watching because of the “wrong” reason - I usually stop watching when one of my beloved characters quit or are fired (Ziva, Hotch, Shemar Moore, etc.)”

Repeating the don’t judge request - I also watch Naked and Afraid sometimes when nothing else is on, not because I like looking at naked people (I mean, they’re naked for a marketing reason right?), but because I like the survivalist aspect of the show - I work in an outdoors profession. Although I usually feel like yelling at the competitors because of the incredibly dumb decisions they make and how annoying they are.

I get hooked on most shows for the characters and relationships - Friday Night Lights, Vampire Diaries, Walking Dead, Sopranos, Dexter. I don’t like violence, but clearly get over it once I’m engaged with the characters.
