White Female
GPA (UW): 3.8ish, upward trend
Teacher recs: Should be good, I get along really well with most
Essays: I’m trying really hard to make them good, but am not that great at English. I do have some cool experiences to write about hopefully that will help in interviews and the essays
Prospective major: Physics

Applying to:
*MIT EA(really want to go here!!!)
-UWashington (in-state)
-Olin
-Brandeis

-Cornell (maybe)

Courseload
I chose dual-enrollment instead of AP’s but I think my courseload has been pretty rigorous. I’m taking all my classes at a pretty highly ranked public university.

-Calc 3
-Physics 3 (calc-based): Waves
-Modern Hebrew I
(Winter)
-Linear Algebra
-Thermodynamics
-Elementary Math based physics I
-Modern Hebrew II
(Spring)
-Partial Diff. Eq and Fourier Analysis
-Modern Physics
-Elementary Math based physics II
-Modern Hebrew III

Extracurriculars

-Taekwondo is my main interest. I’ve been competing over 11 years, traveled the country frequently to competitions since 7th grade. Team captain of multiple state teams, international champion, and 3rd degree black belt. Highlight was training at the Olympic Training Center a few yeas back. I’m injured right now, but hoping to get back to training soon.

-NASA SHARP. Spent my summer in Wisconsin doing research as part of this program. It’s pretty selective and was the best summer of my life. I miss it a lot :(

-I do other minor assorted things too…but I don’t think I’ll put those down.

Misc.
-I was born partially deaf and had some pretty intense speech therapy all the way up through elementary school. I can speak and hear pretty close to normal now though :)

I think that’s it… If you guys could be honest about my chances, I’d really appreciate it. I’m kinda freaking out over here ;)

Community college – slight reach/crapshot

yeah id freak out too if i were you

Sorry for the bump… but it’s really hard to detect sarcasm over the internet and I can’t tell if you think the schools are way out of my reach, adidas3130 :(

Obviously, I know Chip’s kidding because he’s well… we’ll just leave it with that;) I don’t know if you’re being serious, adidas3130… am I aiming way too high? Is there anything I can improve?

MIT does like to see AP scores, definitely in BC Calc and in the higher Physics, but your courseload is absurd and the Hebrew acts as a hook. Taekwondo is another hook. MIT in recent years has tried in some ways to move away from the perception that all their students are nerds who never see the light of day. As a girl, with your activities, APPLYING EARLY, you definitely stand a good shot.

Holy ****, those are hard classes. I’m just taking PDE and Fourier Analysis this year (my senior year of college) and even then, it’s a grad class.

Thanks for both those replies

I was starting to think maybe I set my sights to high, but its nice to have reassurance from you guys. I was also nervous because I read on another thread that it would have been better to take AP’s, but I think I’ll get a lot more out of the dual enrollment classes.

Unfortunately, I haven’t taken the AP Physics or Calculus test officially. I scored 5’s on the practice AP calc test and both parts of AP Physics, but I didn’t actually take the test because my parents and I thought it would be expensive and unnecessary to pay for “college credit”, that I technically already had. I really wish I would have taken them though. If I need them for placement, I think I could take them this May, but by then its too late
I’ve been supplementing most of my courses with the stuff on MIT OCW to make sure I’m not missing out on critical sections in my classes.

Dirt McGirt, thanks for the warning about those classes;) I’m aware that they’re pretty challenging, but I’m looking forward to it. They’re offered as part of a sequence I’m taking through the Applied Math department. I think it will be fun.

yeah umm im just a stupid senior who cant even get into a state school so yeah, i was kidding

wow you basically owned my stats, and im applying EA to MIT also lol. so yeah, i think youll probably get in, i dont see any sort of hole at all in your application except maybe for the lack of community service, you might have neglected to list it. but yeah, i think im in for some ownership lol

Awesome, courtjestr19, hopefully we’ll both get good news in December then! Good luck
I do volunteeer during the school year for a couple hours Friday mornings, but it isn’t really something I love like taekwondo… it was just because I didn’t have class Friday (yay for creative scheduling!). I’m still debating whether to put it down or not… Probably will I guess.

P.S. adidas3130, I’m sure you’ll get into UMichigan. With your stats, all you have to do is apply as early as possible. Seriously, your grades/ecs/everything aren’t bad at all. That’s what sucks about CC though, here everybody posts these amazing stats and then makes all of us normal kids feel like its impossible to get in with “weaker” ones.

um, can you say ACCEPTED

Wow, you guys are super nice. I can’t believe some of you think I might actually have a chance at schools like MIT :):):)! I really really hope all of you are right ;)

Okay, here’s the problem with ranking you well–you have supplied us with no test scores at all. If you are entering senior year you should have taken these by now or be prepping for them–are you doing this?

MIT will require at least two SAT IIs in addition to the regular SAT. You’ll need to average 700+ on these tests–and at least 740+ on the math/science portions (Are you aware Caltech once had an entire admitted class whose SAT IIs Math IIC test scores were 800s?). Not to freak you out, but this is the kind of competition you are facing. P.S. You won’t need to get an 800–but like I said, it has to be at least 740 plus.

Get some test scores, then repost.

(I’m a little curious how people could say you are as good as in when you have no scores here–have you posted before?)

Oh, test scores…
Math 2: 750 (I know… not great, but not horrible either)
ACT: Taking September (average on practice ones is 33-34)
Taking Physics and Chemistry (maybe) in October. I’m expecting at least 750+ on physics and don’t know about chemistry.

I think I have reviewed this person before on another website. I remember seeing something impressive in the test scores section…Pretty sure it was the same person (the speech therapy/deafness thing is rather unique)

i think you should apply to

UC berk
Caltech
and harvard

for the record, MIT requires the SATII mathII, which you took, and any SATII science, you have to take at least one. good luck!

Thanks courtjestr. Good luck to you too :)

zpmqxonw - just for a heads up, I was using the online ACT practice course as well as a book and consistently scoring a 35 overall. On test day I scored a 32…so I’m not sure if it was just me, but I think the practice tests usually overshoot your actual score. All I’m saying is, I’d study really hard if I were you and not let your practice scores make you too confident, like they did for me
. But I’ll be back for round 3 in September. ;)
