I agree about Kate’s clothing. She’s not just a clothes horse, she’s intentional about it. Like today, the red hat had fabric maple leaves in honor of Canada Day. The maple-leaf shaped brooch was a gift to Queen Elizabeth from the Canadian people when she visited many years ago.

I also like that Kate actually gasp will wear the same outfit in public more than once! The white dress today was previously seen in the official engagement photo.

Regarding Charles and Kate: I believe Charles married a woman who understands exactly what she is getting into; the benefits and burdens. She will be a wonderful ambassador for the royals because she actually signed on for a job she wants. Unlike poor Diana, who had no clue what was in store for her, and handled it so badly.

Let’s hope Charlene Wittsock has her eyes open as wide as Kate does.

Kate seems prepared for the never-ending public scrutiny and pressure, and no doubt knows how to handle the ups and downs of her marriage behind closed doors.

I think Diana was unprepared, terribly hurt, and paraded her broken heart in front of whoever would respond. Of course, Charles succumbed to pressure to marry a young, lovely girl, even though was clear he loved no one but Camilla. Sad all around!

I agree with all comments about Kate, Diana, and Charlene. I looked through the wedding photos and am now thoroughly depressed. It would be interesting to read the comments of a body language expert!

Those flower girls are adorable. For some reason, they remind me of the book, Madeleine.

I do not understand Charlene Wittstock at all. I agree with NYMomof2 above about Albert:
I hope they are happy together, but it doesn’t look too promising. Did he really have to “persuade her to stay” for the wedding by having her passport confiscated? Yikes.

I never understood Albert’s mom, either. Grace Kelly was a fine actress, at the peak of success, when she decided to throw it all over for Prince Ranier. Which would have been fine if she’d lived happily ever after, but by most accounts she didn’t.

At least she’d had a number of affairs with Hollywood leading men (sadly, most of them married) to remember in her middle age.

Agree completely. It seems to me that William learned all of the right lessons from his parents’ marriage; i.e., how NOT to choose a royal bride, and then how NOT to treat a royal wife. One small example that’s being highlighted this week as they tour Canada: Charles was jealous and resentful of Diana’s popularity with crowds; William seems to be delighted with Kate’s popularity, but also seems solicitous and supportive, making sure that she’s not overwhelmed.

I’ve always thought that William combined the best of his parents; he has Charles’ conservative traditional nature and reverence for the monarchy, and Diana’s instinct to reach outside the royal bubble and her understanding that the royal family must stay modern in order to stay relevant.

Kate, for her part, has not made a single mistake since engagement day; she is always poised, always good at interacting with both the powerful and the street crowds, always dressed with the perfect combination of stylishness and modesty, always observing the smallest dictates of royal protocol (“Wave from the wrist, dearie, not from the elbow!”). Together, they are a royal power couple even by BRF standards.

Charlene probably has to have a baby now… Yikes! Thought her dress was gorgeous but she seemed really nervous. Loved the little bridesmaids’ outfits!

I really hope Albert and Charlene are happy but the thing that stuck out most to me was when they were driving around the streets of Monaco in the convertible. Charlene didn’t smile and hardly waved…Albert had to constantly prompt her to do so and she made it look like a chore. It was sad. I did love seeing Charlotte Casiraghi (Caroline’s daughter) at the evening dinner. Her dress made her look like Grace in To Catch A Thief. She was gorgeous.

Yeah, there are several photos of Caroline as a teenager where i had to do a double take to see whether it was Caroline or Charlotte.

Steph was so gorgeous when she was younger but all of the smoking and sunbathing hasn’t been kind to her. Her youngest daughter Camille is her mini me but blonde though!

The entire family is stunning. Amazing genes.

Are you including Albert in that? Sorry, I don’t see it.

Not to mention that I don’t get how someone in his position could manage to father three children out of wedlock (with three different women) in this day and age. Hasn’t he ever heard of, you know, taking precautions?

If this plot were in a movie, nobody would believe it. A Princess named Charlene trying to escape the country three times? Her passport confiscated? Crying at the wedding that didn’t look like tears of joy?

One wonders what “arrangement” was made to get her to go through with this.

As for Stephanie and Caroline, I admit that I was a little shocked to see what they look like now. I hadn’t seen pictures of them in many years.

Stephanie had two, Louis (born 1992) and Pauline (born 1994) with her bodyguard, Daniel Ducruet.

She and Ducruet were briefly married, although after the birth of their children.

She then had her third child, Camille, in 1998 with another former palace bodyguard, Jean-Raymond Gottlieb. She and Gottlieb were never married.

Interestingly enough, Wikipedia states that illegitimate children are nothing new in the Grimaldi line. In fact, the mother of Prince Rainier III (the Rainer who married Grace Kelly) was an illegitimate child who was adopted by her father, enabling Rainer to take the throne.

Rainier himself “made obtaining succession rights in this manner impossible for the illegitimate children of children by adopting a new constitution in 2002, which limited the succession to direct, legitimate issue.” (quoted from Wikipedia)

Caroline had three children with her second husband, who was killed in a boating accident in 1990. The three are Andrea (born 1984), Charlotte (born 1986) and Pierre (born 1987).

In 1999, Caroline had a fourth child, Alexandra, with her third husband.

Edited to add: The Wikipedia entry for Prince Rainier indicates that Princess Caroline is next in line for the throne (presumably as Albert has no legitimate heirs).
