College Football Star Michael Sam Says He Is Gay; May Become First Publicly Gay Player in N.F.L.

I think one of the comments hit it on the head for me (summarizing here): a player comes out as gay and is given the cold shoulder from many and yet abusers, animal killers, and other felons are welcomed back with open arms.

And he’s a 1st team All American, defensive player of the year in the SEC and was voted MVP by his teammates, who knew he’s gay.

^ You’re right (my comment was about the NFL and not the college players). I hope his teammates are a sign of what’s coming to the NFL (a changing atmosphere)

50/50 that he gets drafted IMO. Teams won’t want the distraction, still too many homophobes, especially amongst the coaching staffs.

I hope I am wrong.

In 5 years, when 90% of the current players are gone, it will be different.

He’ll be drafted. The question will be if his draft position falls because of this.

From his financial perspective, I think he made a mistake. Teams don’t want controversy. If there are ten guys identical in football skills, the one guy who has some controversy is less like to be drafted. I hope there is some fearless team for him.

Sure, teams don’t want controversy. Then again, if he gets drafted by San Francisco, that’s not much of a controversy.

Last year two SF players appeared in the It Gets Better video project on the project website.
But when they realized it was in support of LGBT youth, they freaked, so ( Dan Savage)he took them out.
They do know who Dan Savage is right?
@-)
However, there still is a video on the 49 er website so their stance still seems to be more inclusive than other teams.

Double post

It may mean that he is more likely to be drafted by a team where the management and coaching staff will do their best to make sure that there is no locker room drama or controversy (stuff like [this](http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20131108/richie-incognito-jonathan-martin-hazing-code/)).

Considering that he was “out” to his college teammates, he may have figured he was going to be “out” at some point in the NFL; better to be “out” before the draft and reduce the chance of ending up on an “culturally unsuitable” team.

http://mmqb.si.com/2014/02/09/michael-sam-monday-morning-quarterback/?eref=sihp</a></p>

ESPN and other analysts have him pegged as third or fourth round pick without the gender attraction being considered. I have great respect for his college teammates for having his back all last season. It shows that professionals could have the same consideration.

Just because a teammate is gay does not mean that he’s going to be sexually attracted by his fellow players or act unprofessionally in the locker room or off field. Straight men and women manage to work together all the time. And gay players have been in the locker rooms all along, albeit secretively. No one has been accosted or intimidated - be big boys and deal with it!

Maybe the Ravens will draft him. Plenty of players came out in support of him this morning.

It blows my mind that this is an issue. I sincerely hate people sometimes.

Chris Kluwe, the ex-punter for the Vikings, who is not gay but has been outspoken for gay rights, believes he lost his job because his outspokenness caused issues with his homophobic coaches. His position coach is alleged to have said [“We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows.”](<a href=“http://deadspin.com/i-was-an-nfl-player-until-i-was-fired-by-two-cowards-an-1493208214]"We”>I Was An NFL Player Until I Was Fired By Two Cowards And A Bigot) He is suing the Vikings over his termination. I doubt the Vikings are unique.

NFL staffs and locker rooms are also filled with people claiming to be religious - how many players do you see thanking God for enabling them to score a touchdown? Most organized religions still condemn homosexual behavior.

It’s going to be very tough for this young man. There may be only a handful of teams willing to give him a chance.

Fortunately, it only takes one.

I was listening to sports radio this morning (I’m in Lions territory here…) the consensus: we’ll take anyone as long as they can win.
The public (in general) is beyond ready to be over with this homophobic crap. It’s just the higher-ups stuck in this backasswards mode. Maybe they’ll feel the public pressure if he’s as good as he appears on paper (never seen him play).

That’s true in some parts of the country, I think that there are parts that are far less tolerant.

While it only takes one team, that team’s needs have to align with the player. The Lions, for example, have more pressing needs than a defensive lineman. So they probably wouldn’t draft him regardless of whether he is in or out of the closet. So his chances may be even further restricted.

If he’s not drafted, someone will bring him in as an undrafted free agent, but they make almost nothing compared to a 3rd or 4th round pick, which is where he was predicted to go, and are not given much chance to make the team, whereas your 3rd and 4th round picks will generally stick for at least a year.

Again, I hope I am wrong.

The seahawks did pretty well without first tier draft picks.
