There have been persistent rumors about Ryan Fitzpatrick, who would actually be an interesting choice. But I think they’re going back to Geno next year, which sounds good to me.
And Fitzpatrick is the Houston guy with the beard?
I did hear something about giving Geno one more year with a coach who is better with QBs but don’t know enough about their situation to judge
Yes, Fitzpatrick was with Houston this year, and was having probably the best year of his career before he got injured. He had a 95.3 QB rating in the 12 games he started - by way of comparison, Geno’s rating this year was 77.5. Fitzy is a 2005 Harvard grad, was a backup for the Rams for a couple of years, then for the Bengals, then got the starting job for the Bengals in 2008, then was the starter for four seasons in Buffalo before going to the Titans last year and the Texans this year. He’s never been great, but he’s solid and, at least for the coming season, I think he’d be an upgrade over Geno. But he’s 32 and he’s not going to be the future of the franchise, and I don’t think the Jets are yet ready to give up on Geno, who’s only 24. So my betting is that Geno will begin the season as the starter.
Goodell’s going to award the Patriots first round pick to the Jets as compensation for the Jets tampering…
Saintfan’s: “So will the Jets draft a QB?”
I hope so. After all, we haven’t had one for 10 or 15 years. It’s time.
Unfortunately, I think the Jets are going to stick with Geno Smith. They hired Chan Gaily as the OC because he works with a spread offense, and those (stupid) enough to defend Geno Smith claim that he was a ‘great’ quarterback at West Virginia, who used a spread offense, so if they recreate that with the Jets ipso facto he will be good (I challenge that, anyone who saw his performance against Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl, a syracuse team and defense that was probably one of the worst ever to play in a bowl game, would have to be on drugs). Fitzpatrick at times showed some good playing, but he is not really a starting QB IMO, he is a solid backup, no more. I suspect is Mariotta is available at 6, the Jets would take him, but I suspect that isn’t going to happen. There are some other QB’s in the draft who might be interesting, like the guy from UCLA, but if they draft a qb I suspect it will be in a deeper round.I am kind of hoping they try and sign Cromartie, he and Reavis worked well together, and would make for one heck of a secondary.
The story of course is Philadelphia, either Kelly is the greatest football mind since Evil One in New England, or he is the biggest buffoon. Get rid of McCoy, Foles and Maclin, and replace Foles with Bradford? Besides the fact he has the worst knees since Joe Willie Namath (without the talent), he also wasn’t that great a QB to start with. And having an immobile QB with a knee one thread away from coming apart, in an offense like Kelly uses, it makes no sense. I think he wants Sanchez at QB, which will be his downfall. Sanchez had a lot of yards last year, but he was like Kyle Orton (he of perennial fantasy football stardom), fancy stats, but a loser. I wonder if Chip Kelly belongs to the Brian Schottenheimer fan club (he where QB’s go to die…), he now has his top two QB’s who were tutored by the Schlockmeister, God help Philadelphia. And oh, yeah, he is up to 10 Oregon players, just signed some ex Giant retreat at CB…
The Revis deal is pretty nuts, and I don’t blame the Pats for walking away. Jets made Revis the highest-paid cb by far, which is a stupid football move, but will take some pressure off the front office.
What I don’t understand is why they cut Browner. He was only around $6 mil against the cap, and after getting rid of Revis’ $25 mil they have plenty of cap space, and can rework some other contracts to free up more if they need it. I think they screwed up.
Speaking of the Eagles - this cracked me up: http://www.thedrawplay.com/comic/jeremy-maclin-gets-a-contract-offer/
DeMarco Murray . . . what will happen to him? I was listening to Mike & Mike on my way in and Greenie was pointing out that people gave him crap all season for saying that they were working Murray too hard and risking breaking him down. Now his value is reduced because he is broken down and he won’t get paid what he should after the season that he had. People gave Seattle a hard time for letting Lynch “get away with” not attending OTAs and resting, but he is still OK and they rest him AND pay him. Hard to beat that.
And the grades are in…
I don’t understand Revis’ decision as an athlete. Who wants to play for a loser? I guess he likes being the center of attention more than winning. And maybe he didn’t like the way Belichick has his players be quiet all year and avoid the attention that Revis apparently wants. As I’ve always seen it, there are 3 motivations: money, place and winning. This is true outside of sports - that you’d rather work for the “better” rather than the “worse” - but it’s especially true in the pure competition of athletics.
A winner so far to me is Detroit replacing Suh for maybe a third of the salary cap hit. It’s for 1 year but I would never build my team’s salary structure around a defensive lineman. Note that Detroit still has a cap hit for Suh’s rookie deal, which means they’re still paying more for that single position than any other team except Miami and Houston (and maybe one more).
Murray is not broken down. His value is not reduced. His value is simply a reflection of the marketplace. The Cowboys, although this might irritate some of their fans, are simply doing the absolute right thing. They learned from rewarding Barber (a MUCH better back than Murray) with a long term contract that did not pan out. Murray has been in Dallas a long time and only had ONE excellent season. His numbers were great and as every player he contributed in wins and … losses. His fumbles against the Skins and in Green Bay did cost the team.
The reality of the Cowboys is that they could have plugged a washed-up back a la Ingram or even Richardson and gotten more than 1,000 yards – courtesy of a superior OL and a smart QB.
Many hope that Murray will be resigned in Dallas, but he does not, c’est la vie. There will be a different back carrying the ball, and perhaps even better results. Dallas knows this and so does the league.
And finally, ask yourself how long it would take JJ to pick up that other back from upnorth who is in a bit of a pickle. I think that JJ would take all but 3 seconds to sign AP if he were available. And that would be GOOD for the Cowboys.
In this NFL, you pass to win and run when you’re better physically and/or are ahead. I don’t see the value in big money for a running back because the difference between a good and very good one is, to me, not much.
Fitzpatrick to Jets is confirmed:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/11/texans-trade-ryan-fitzpatrick-to-jets-for-conditional-draft-pick/
The take in the article: “Fitzpatrick is better than nothing. And maybe better than Smith.”
NFL careers are short and money is money
For you, @xiggi
We will love you forever in Houston Andre. Thanks for a great career with us.
I’m at a complete loss as to what the Texans are doing this off-season. But then again, I’m not running the team and Superbowls aren’t won on paper. Just puzzled is all lol
Revis salaries:
2013 (Bucs): $16 million
2014 (Pats): $12 million
2015 (Jets): $17 million
Next highest paid CB in the NFL: $14 million
Unless someone has got new information, Revis’ contract has been reported as:
5 years, $70 million for an average of $14 million per year.
However the first three years are $16 mil, $17 mil, and $15 mil, for an average of $16 mil, with years 1 and 2 fully guaranteed, and $6 mil of year 3 guaranteed.
If he makes it to years 4 and 5 ($11 million per year) he will almost certainly hold out for more money, that is his M.O.
No bonuses of any kind, which makes it relatively painless for the Jets to dump him after year 2 and completely painless after year 3.
