Are you ready for some football?

That’s what John Clayton (ESPN and Seattle homer) said as well

Well they’ve done it. The NFL has given up its non-profit status. $-)

^ All that means in practice is that now they won’t have to disclose Goodell’s or anybody else’s salary any more.

The league offices are what was tax exempt, and they don’t turn a profit because their only income comes from the teams who only pay enough to fund its operations.

The $10 billion in league revenue has always been fully taxed because it all goes to the teams, which are not tax exempt.

It’s nothing more than a PR move.

yep - knowing Goodell’s salary was becoming “a distraction”

How did the Jets avoid losing a draft pick for tampering? It was practically a textbook case right out of the rulebook. I know the Jets’ owner is an idiot, but rules are rules right?

Oh wait, the Patriots are the aggrieved party… never mind.

A $100K fine is a joke.

I wonder how Mariota feels about the talk of the Browns trying to move up to get him. He’s gotta be thinking, “just please, no . . .”

I know… poor guy. This town is on tenterhooks. We love him so!

Since I am a Jaguars fan, and we have nothing to talk about except our oodles of cap space, Who do you think is the 3rd QB taken? Hundley? Garrett Grayson?

Who are the QBs who you thought were going to be busts who weren’t?
Who are the QBs who you thought were going to be great and they weren’t?

I thought Joey Harrington would have done better.
Saban taking Culpepper over Brees was brilliant.

Going back to that; isn’t it amazing how much of the last decade of football was shaped by Saban’s decision.
The Saints would not have signed Brees, and don’t have their 2006 resurrection season and there’s a good chance they’re now the San Antonio Saints.
The Saints almost certainly would not have won their Super Bowl without Brees; at the very least, would they have remained one of the NFL’s most mediocre franchises?

Now, if I am posing the Dolphins signing Brees, maybe Saban has enough NFL success to stick around in Miami a while longer. Maybe he rivals Bill Belichick, becomes a credible AFC East rival to the Patriots and they don’t have quite the success they’ve had over the years???

Which would keep Saban from moving to Alabama. The college dynasty, which has helped influence a generation (in football terms) of players and coaches at this point, particularly on the defensive side of the ball is not built?

See how much time in the Jag stands we have to think about everything because we don’t have to jump up much to cheer :frowning:

The Tampa Bay Bucs’ last few seasons have been horrible. Hope tonight with the draft something good happens for the team.

Yes I am actually watching the draft, because I am a pathetic loser.

Halfway through the first round and no big surprises yet, and (boringly) no blockbuster trades.

It was fun watching Suzy Kolber make Todd Gurley cry. Mostly her questions are stupid though.

I have big doubts about Jameis Winston. I think his feet are heavy and footwork in the NFL is very important and though he throws very naturally and easily I question his decision making, particularly in the middle of field.

I have no idea if Marcus Mariotta can play in the NFL. I wouldn’t be surprised if he can’t but then maybe he can.

Teams invest so much in QB choices and then are crippled by the randomness of bad luck.

I was sad to see all the great players who went to teams that my team will have to play next year. I am trying hard to remind myself that Jimmy Graham was out first round pick. I really want Gurley, White and Shelton on my team. :frowning:

Well . . . I was about to give @xiggi a bad time about the Cowboys and character issues but then the Seahawks made their pick and it’s a doozy. He’d better not step a toe out of line. I am lukewarm at best. :-??

I still wonder about the O line but we have ourselves a kick returner which was a HUGE weakness last year.

Not loving the Pats’ second pick… safety isn’t really a position of need IMO. But… IBWT I guess.

I don’t think much about the picks because they know so much more than any fan or “expert”. I do read about them so I can compare how they look in the NFL versus how they were described. Some of them show right away that they can’t do it. Others show flashes and then fade out. I love the talk that NE replaced Vince Wilfork. That’s a big freaking jersey to fill to say “replaced” when we have no idea.

I read a fairly lousy NYT article about what happened to each first round pick of 1990 - which includes Emmitt Smith. Amazing to see how many RB’s went in the 1st then. I think a big change happened when Denver found Terrell Davis in the 6th round. Some of those 1990 1st round RB’s were real reaches.

In this draft, I marveled at the number of WR’s selected. Really? In reality, having WR’s doesn’t compensate for your QB. “He’s a game changer.” That’s nearly always B.S. Randy Moss was a game changer. Calvin Johnson is a game changer. Lots of others are good receivers and some benefit by playing with QB’s like Brees and Rodgers.

I was surprised that the Seahawks took one until I saw that he is a kick return specialist. They traded up and gave up quite a few later picks to get there.

As bothered as I am about some of the background of our first pick I wonder how the prognosticators could say that he would fall completely out of the draft at the same time as they believed that Winston should be first.

The persistent booing of Goodell is kind of interesting.

I’m glad that I will be out for opening day of boating season tomorrow so will not be tempted to watch anymore.

Nice to see offseason football dueling.

OK - after some research I like our pick. I like that he fully owns up to being wrong and had taken steps to go forward in a positive way. It sounds like he’s done way more soul searching and work on his personal side than many others who have stepped out of line (thinking about Winston and his draft day crab leg instagram). It also sounds like a lot of teams (Denver and Dallas in particular) were hoping that he’d slide down or out of the draft and they planned to try to go get him anyway away from the bright lights.

No one has any opinions on the deflate gate report? I’m shocked. I came here expecting to see frothing at the mouth, and in-depth analysis of the report, email by email. I want frothing, at a minimum!
