Yikes re the use of the word ‘ho’. It’s not factually true if you mean ‘whore’, that is, you do not know whether she is/was a prostitute. If you are using the more colloquial use of the word, imo that’s a loaded term, often racist in intention. I really object to the word and calling someone by that word.

Never is there an excuse for hitting someone who has less power (physical, psychological, whatever) than you do. I don’t even like it when ‘equals’ hit each other.

Then how about the less loaded term: BIMBO-- though there’s a good case for “whore”. Any one who takes that extreme of humiliation & abuse and still decides to marry a fat paycheck is a whore in my book. That doesn’t excuse Rice. He deserves to do time. Bob Goodell should be fired.

Women in abusive relationships often stay in abusive relationships. This happens routinely with abused women, whether their abuser is a famous person or some random guy. We don’t need to look to money to explain it, because it’s the norm.

The #WhyIStayed hashtag is giving lots of reasons why victims stay with their abusers:

She thought she could change him.

Her religion says marriage is forever.

She didn’t want to prove her family was right about him.

He isolated her from family and friends, so he was all she had.

She was ashamed.

He convinced her that she didn’t deserve any better.

Her father abused her mother, or her father abused her. She didn’t know any other kind of relationship.

She was afraid he’d kill her if she left him. [Unfortunately, a justified fear.]

He said he would get custody of the kids after a divorce. She was afraid to leave them with their abusive father.

He physically prevented her from escaping.

She had no money and no place to go. How would she support her children?

He threatened to injure the children if she left.

&c.

I have the greatest compassion for women trapped in abusive relationships. I hope they find the courage to escape, and the self-esteem to realize they deserve better. I don’t see how namecalling is productive.

For those who’ve never been in an abusive relationship, it’s a head scratcher. Why doesn’t she leave? Seems pretty straightforward.

Rice’s abuse of his wife did not begin with that punch in the elevator. Abuse is a constellation of physical, emotional, social, societal, religious, family, and financial factors, intertwined with each other, often for years. For those with a few minutes and a desire to understand rather than judge:

The other day I was just about to start a separate thread, when i saw the topic had been introduced here. I know CCers don’t like the same topic in multiple places.

^^KKmama, have you heard what the price was? I haven’t seen that mentioned in any article I’ve read. None of the first series of offers was up to what the asking price was. I’m not at all surprised really that the Canadian offer (with Bon Jovi tagging along) wasn’t more than the Pegulas’. The Bills games in Toronto have been pretty much a big flop and there’s no way that the offer was going to be sweetened to a much higher amount. I doubt that the ‘locals’ displeasure had anything to do with the final deal, to be honest. It’s all about the $$.

I don’t even have a backup QB right now. Stafford’s bye week is no. 9, so I figure I’ve got plenty of time. My problem is no breakout WR/RB. They’re all OK – and I do have Arian Foster – but the autodraft gave me Rice, and so, yeah, that’s no help.

I have Andrew Luck and McCown and I think I want to get rid of McCown. Derek Anderson was available yesterday but I’m not sure how much time he’ll get once Cam’s back, so I really should take a QB who plays, right? Ben R, one of the Carrs, a few other scrubby guys left. Wish I could draft Marcus Mariota from my Ducks, lol.

On a bright, looking towards what individuals can do, note: Pete Carroll spoke directly to his team about this incident and domestic violence in general in a meeting and said that it will change how the Seahawks evaluate and screen players. That needs to happen on each team where an individual owner, GM and coach has the direct power to NOT look the other way on these issues when they can be known or guessed ahead of time (see Hernandez).

It must be tough to be a football player. Your job requires you to engage in extreme violence against those who oppose you, but you must react to personal conflict without being physical. That on/off switch must be difficult to maintain. I guess that is the part that separates the professionals from the rest.

Matt Ryan put up huge numbers last week. I would go with him if he is still available.

razor- it should not be tough to do at all. My job requires me to do extremely difficult things to people yet I have no problem not doing that to my spouse, friends or neighbors because I do not interact with them while I am doing my job.

Lucks bye week isn’t until week 10. I would wait a few weeks to see how others shake out. This new league I am in limits the number of roster changes so I’m pretty conservative about making a lot of changes this early.
