I’m definitely not a Patriots fan, so now I’ll watch the Super Bowl. It’s just karma for the Patriots. They won playoff and Super Bowl games with last second FGs, so yesterday they lost because of a bad kick. Last year, they won the Super Bowl because of an interception at the goal line. Yesterday, the lost their chance to win in OT because of an interception at the goal line. Oh well.
Karmic payback isn’t hitting a fg to win a game, or missing a kick to lose a game.
Karmic payback was the Helmet Catch to ruin an undefeated season in the aftermath of Spygate, on a play where there were multiple offensive holding penalties that didn’t get called, plus Eli was in the grasp.
^play looked good to me!
And then they beat them again because a Giant fell backwards into the end zone when trying not to score.
^ Yeah, I’m still bitter.
And then the miracle pass to Manningham in 2011…
And then another miracle catch last year to set up the comeback for Seattle… but apparently the football gods decided they had tortured the Patriots enough.
I didn’t understand why, when the Broncos player intercepted the 2 point conversion attempt, ran it into the field, and fumbled it, the Patriots were not given possession at that time. Does play immediately cease once the conversion is not successful?
@nrsb4:
Yes, a failed two point conversion is similar if an extra point is blocked, the play is dead right there. The only time a ball is live is on a missed field goal attempt, if that is blocked or missed it is a live ball (I don’t know if the NFL changed the rules on this, when with SD Antonio Cromarte once returned a missed field goal he caught in the end zone for a td). Thus the guy running the ball out was simply him not understanding the rules.
As far as the games go, they both were pretty boring to me. Denver’s defense was tough, but a lot of it, too, was the NE had no offensive line, Brady was getting hit hard and had to throw quickly far too much. The game definitely wasn’t won by Peyton, it was kind of sad to watch him, he is a shadow of what he once was.
The Cardinals game was pretty crappy as well, Arizona was not in that game at all, both the D and offense looked horrible, which is not a big surprise, they didn’t exactly play well against Green Bay or for the prior weeks as well. Palmer lived up to his reputation as the real life equivalent of Shane Falco, as one twitter guy I subscribe to said, “Palmer played QB like a college kid who had drank a 12 pack and then played Madden” (another quote was great, too, about Palmer “You can take the QB out of Cincinnati or Oakland, you can’t take Oakland or Cincinatti out of the QB”. Quite frankly, it was embarassing, no offense meant to Carolina who are playing very, very well, but the Cardinals were ill prepared on both sides of the ball.
Extra points can now be returned by the defense, and if they take it all the way back they get as many points as the offense would have scored.
The Denver player had a pretty clear shot at returning it, I thought. But the Patriots caught him and forced a fumble.
Once the play was dead though, the attempt had failed. No second chances unless there’s a penalty.
Eta: it’s a new rule this year, and happened in a game in December between the Saints and Panthers.
Actually I was always under the impression that the most fundamental rule for players is play and play hard until you hear the whistle.
Here’s that NYTimes article I mentioned previously:
[True Scandal of Deflategate Lies in the N.F.L.’s Behavior](True Scandal of Deflategate Lies in the N.F.L.’s Behavior - The New York Times)
notrichenough—Patriots could have theoretically recovered the Bronco fumble and tried to run the ball back into the endzone for the 2 pt conversion.
@MADad, they could’ve, and that would have been the most awesome play ever if they had returned the fumble for a score. Chances were pretty small of that, though.
To me this could shape up as a repeat of 2014. The Broncos managed only 20 points at home against the Pats, and face a much tougher defense in the Super Bowl. Peyton is a shadow of even his two-year-ago self, forget about when he was in his prime.
I know he’s the sentimental favorite and everyone (well, almost everyone) wants to see him go out on top, but I think Carolina’s defense will eat him alive.
And Newton has the scrambling ability to avoid the rush, assuming Denver can bring the heat against a team playing its first string o-line and not a bunch of rookies and UFAs.
Mostly I hope it’s not a boring blowout. Only 15 out of 49 Superbowls have been won by less than a touchdown.
I’m shocked. Nobody posted about the Super Bowl?! Was there another thread I missed?
Thanks for bumping this up. I was wondering where this thread has fallen… I think there was some discussion of the game in the thread for those who did not watch the game.
Yeah, I saw a comment about it being a “sloppy game.” But isn’t that more of a reflection of good defense?
I found the game disappointing. I didn’t really have a dog in the fight, but I was kind of leaning toward the Panthers. But I would be happy with the Broncos, for Manning. But, geez, he was so inconsequential. Played poorly. I don’t even feel so happy for him, though I am delighted for Demarcus Ware, who was never going to win with the Cowboys. Really glad that he got a ring. Props to that whole Broncos defense.
I liked the Superbowl Babies commercial.
While I was not necessarily a fan of the halftime show, it bothers me immensely to discover this morning that Twitter erupted in volcanic fashion with people accusing the halftime show of promoting a homosexual agenda because of all the colors (it was actually promoting Coldplays’ new album). People are livid about it. But I loved one comment I saw - “When you’re a hammer, you think everything is a nail. When you’re anti-gay, you think everything with lots of colors is promoting homosexuality.”

As far as commercials go - the sheep singing Queen was my favorite. Almost made me want to go buy that pickup truck, and I hate pickup trucks.
I liked the singing sheep as well. And the Drake cell phone one was funny.
I noticed that Cam Newton was chewing a big wad of blue chewing gum WHILE PLAYING. Doesn’t seem very wise.
Also, why didn’t he go in for the fumble late in the 4th quarter? Was he afraid he would be injured doing so?
And bolting out of the post game news conference? Not very sportsmanlike or becoming of the NFL MVP. JMO.
