No way the Broncos let their “quarterback of the future” get away for a paltry few mill per year.
There’s a reason they let him get away… I’m not convinced the Texans have gotten an upgrade over Brian Hoyer.
If SF won’t trade them Kaepernick, what do they do? Pick up RGMe? Make a play for Ryan Fitzpatrick? Bring back Tebow? It’s mighty slim pickings at this point…
Has a Super Bowl winner ever lost all their qbs for the following season?
The big winner so far IMO is Chase Daniel. $21 mil/$12 mil guaranteed to hold a clipboard… I don’t believe he can legitimately compete against Bradford. In 6 years he’s got 77 career pass attempts and one td. What was Philly thinking? Was there really that much interest in a short, slow backup qb?
I had heard that story about Peyton Manning but not all those horrible details. UT asking her to frame a black football player for what Manning did? Manning lying about it, years later, and thinking it would all go away? Maybe this is why Eli pulls a face around him - he just may know his brother’s true character. I’m very glad she fought back.
The season keeps on getting weirder…So Mark Sanchez has signed with Denver, just adds more and more weirdness to everything. Osweiler getting 18 million? Chase Daniel close to 8 million? I know QB’s are a rarity, but holy cow. Last I heard Cleveland was actively trying to trade for Kapernick, and RGIII was talking to the Jets. It is likely that the Jets will get Fitzpatrick, he likely won’t get the money he is looking for, given the signings that have happened, SF is hanging with Gabbert, Denver has signed, and cleveland likely will get Kapernick.
Well . . . here we go again. Pre-season is wrapping up this weekend. Final roster cuts are coming. How do you feel about your team? Are you ready for some football?
I’m wondering if Tony Romo has some kind of bone disorder, and I’m not kidding. All quarterbacks get pounded repeatedly, but most don’t have multiple bone fractures.
Being a Jets fan, I feel the same way I do every season, which is having a glimmer of hope I am wrong but in my gut knowing I am not, that the Jets will have one of a string of many mediocre seasons. Their defense looks decent, especially the defensive line, but the offense is questionable. Fitzpatrick at best is a mediocre QB, and even with the two established receivers, and having Forte out of the backfield, and a couple of young guys who look good, I still think they are going to play down to Fitz’s level. The offensive line has questions as well, and at tight end you have either a blocking te who isn’t great catching (sudfeld), and then you have another Idzik special, Amaro, who is horrible, can’t catch the ball, fumbles, but thinks he is the next Gronkowski (the third guy whose name escapes me is basically filling up space). Chan Gailey is not a great offensive coordinator either, so it isn’t like inspired play calling will save the day either.
I know everyone points to last season, but the Jets had one of the easiest schedules last year, and this year they have a tough schedule. Opening with Cincinnati isn’t bad, because the Jets have their number and Marvin Lewis is an expert at extracting defeat from the jaws of victory. The experts are predicting 8-8, I think that is probably the best they can do. Sorry, the idea of a game manager QB and a great defense may work (it did for Denver last year), but it also takes an extraordinary defense to do that, and Fitz is not even that great a game manager, Manning may have been a shadow of himself, but he still was the smart QB who didn’t throw into triple coverage the way Fitz will. The Jets need a franchise QB and they need a real offensive coordinator, and won’t win until they have that.
As for the NFL overall, some interesting dramas. Will Chip Kelley redeem himself or will he flop once again? Will Prescott be the next Andrew Luck (with Romo with his usual 8 week vacation), or will he find the pressure too much? Will Denver start Sanchez, who fumbles picking up the ball in practice drills, or will they go with the nobody from Northwestern? Will Minnesota find Bridgewater’s IR to be devastating, or will they find they can plug in another QB and do just as well? Will the officials continue to call roughing the passer penalties for daring to tackle the quarterback? Will Jimmy Garafalo leave the Patriots 0 and 4 and be disappeared into another dimension by the Evil One, or will he be the equivalent of Tom Brady when Mo Lewis took out Bledsoe (Bill Belichick still has a signed Mo Lewis jersey he secretly wears in gratitude)? These and other dramas can be seen on the weekly drama “As the Goodell Churns”.
How about Appalachian State nearly pulling another shocker? If only their kicker had not missed the PAT, or if he had made that FG attempt, they very likely would have won in regulation.
I drafted my ff team in near total ignorance this year (usually I do lots of research) and will probably do better than I usually do, which is terrible.
As a Packer fan I am hopeful for the season (they have a soft schedule) but was horrified at Teddy Bridgewater’s injury and have absolutely no schadenfreude about it. Sad.
I am also doing college fantasy football and will no doubt suck as badly as I did last year…!
I have lost the championship game of my ff league for 5 straight years. I am the Buffalo Bills of fantasy.
Had one of the worst draft positions this year - 6/10. Did ok, although I am pretty weak at running back.
Speaking of Buffalo and schadenfreude, I am enjoying watching Rexy drive that team into the ground. The Jets will probably be mediocre as Fitzpatrick comes back to earth from his career year last year, and his backups are a pretty feeble bunch (Hackenberg was 11/31 for 54 yards and an int last night, a stellar 1.7 y.p.a. and 30.7 rating). Miami… meh. Hard to predict, maybe Gase can bring some consistency.
As long as Janeane Garofalo (oops, I mean Jimmy Garappolo) doesn’t mess up too bad, the Pats should take the division again.
@notrichenough:
You made me spew coffee on my monitor, that last one was a classic! (Though I think Ms. Garofalo might be tougher than Jimmy). I know people think NE is finished, they don’t have the D, their offense is suspect, no RBs worth anything, no receivers, Brady is getting old (and out 1/4 of the season), and all I can say as a long time observer of the team stomping the pee out of the jets, those who count NE out are foolish, to say the least, it is a team built to work around problems (anyone remember when Brady tore his knee and Matt Cassel won 10 games with them? Anyone notice what happened to Cassel after he left New England? )
Not sure anyone thinks NE is finished. They are generally considered to have a top-10 defense, while they don’t have a true #1 receiver they make up for it with two ridiculous TEs, they’ve been doing running-back-by-committee for years, and Brady is ageless.
He’s got to hit the wall some year, right? says every depressed Jets fan.
Their 3rd string qb, Jacoby Brissett, has actually looked pretty good so far, so I think Garappolo will be on a fairly short leash. I think the Pats will go at least 12-4, and if they make it out of the first 4 games at 3-1 or better (which is very possible) they could wind up with home field through the playoffs. Who is better in the AFC? Denver has taken huge steps backwards, Indy is a fraud team, the AFC North teams will beat the snot out of each other…
@musicprnt and I will cry in our beers all season, as usual.
I was disappointed then Tennessee and South Carolina won. Those were good close games, amd I would have enjoyed the upsets. But not to worry: Alabama will beat USC by a large margin amd restore order to the universe.
By the way, has anyone heard from @saintfan? I hadn’t seen her around for quite a while and missed her sense of humor. I sent her a PM, but never got a reply.
I spent last year getting kid #2 off to school, empty nesting (trying to spend less time online and more out doing things), getting kid #1 graduated and moved and getting kid #2 moved into a new house off campus and now here I am. I am really ready for some football. This is that frustrating time of year when our baseball team is still limping along to the finish and my sports talk radio station is still obligated to talk about them and broadcast the games.
I’m excited about our new rookie backup QB and hoping that our revamped (again!) O-line can keep him on the bench in week one when they face Suh. I think we are set for running backs and receivers. As ever, TE is an issue because they keep getting injured. We drafted a few really good ones and one is out already.
Saintfan! So glad you’re back with us. You have been busy. Nice to hear it all went well.
But now it’s time to get our priorities right. Tell the kids we’ll call them back later, throw the dishes into the sink without washing them, tell our spouses whatever it is can wait, put our feet up on the couch and shout ourselves hoarse over football together. Yay!
