Are you ready for some football?

Yes, but did you hear Barkely try to defense the practice of beating children? Amazing. He suggested it was acceptable among blacks. I about fell out of my chair.

(I put this in the wrong thread last night) The prosecutor in AP child abuse case denies that a first grand jury declined to indict. He says that the case only went to one grand jury, which decided to indict AP.

Yeah, but Jim got him to back down. Barkley was trying to make this a Southern thing and a black thing and a how we’ve always done it thing, but it didn’t work. No one is trying to say you can’t spank your kids, Charles, but you can’t beat them and maybe you don’t get to decide that fine line.

A LOT of people are trying to say that. But this particular discussion happens to be based on the idea that you can’t injure your kids.

Barkeley has been known to make oddball statements. In his playing days he said the guy whom fell through a plate glass window after Barkeley punched him, “deserved what he got.”

I didn’t see the Jim Rhome interview with Sir Charles but it sounds like Barkeley stepped out of his element if he said that bruises and blood on a misbehaving child was no problem.

I watched the FOX football program, which sort of just gave superficial attention to these issues, although Christine Brennan gave a thoughtful critique of Goodell.

Just announced that the Panthers are de-activating Greg Hardy today. In the photo on FOX Sports today he looks very scary and intimidating. His girlfriend must have been terrified that day.

Whooo!! HTOWN!!! 2-0 for Houston, on to the Giants next week. It was a nice and efficient game again today. Foster and Johnson in their prime forms and Hopkins. Told you. The defense was the bigger factor here. The Raiders looked lost all game (You can’t fumble the ball twice!!) although they did have some big plays (i.e the Carr 40 yard run in the beginning). I can really see the Texans improvement from last season. Hopefully this will keep up through out the year.

I had Antonio Gates for fantasy. Yes. Just yes and the satisfaction of knowing I crushed my opponent soundly today.

Overall, today was a slow slate of games. No game has really jumped out at me. Except for Jets/Packers. Come on JETS!

I feel so sorry for RGIII. Injuries stink.

@razorsharp‌ And he was even trying to get out of bounds this time.

We was robbed … What the Colts might but should say. Those refs should be sent to call HS games. Kelly has always been a very lucky fellow.

I’m a little surprised at how relatively easy it has seemed for Kelly to adapt his style to the NFL.

Dadx, I am not sure it is an unqualified success. The Eagles were 3-5 at the midpoint last year. They had plenty of luck in a number of victories. Their record is much better since then, but they were trailing badly in the first game against a horrible opponent, and last night they had NO business winning that game. Without the two horrendous calls, the Colts would have cruised to an easy victory.

I have doubts about the sustainability of the whimsical game plans of Kelly.

I read those notes from Adrian Peterson to the child’s mother about the beating he inflicted on his kid, and all I want to know is how he got admitted to the University of Oklahoma.

So glad with the Vikings decision. Hitting your children (spanking, switching, “whupping”) is NOT okay under any circumstances. 4 kids later, and neither my husband, or I have hit our kids in any capacity. And they aren’t spoiled, rude, or disrespectful.

So what action can we expect from Peterson now? Will he fight this ‘suspension/ban’ and claim that the NFL isn’t following its own rules (whatever they are today) becaused he hasn’t been convicted of anything in Texas? That in and of itself is interesting; the different standards for corporal punishment in Peterson’s home state of Texas (where the incidents occurred) and his place of employment, Minnesota.

Peterson and Rice present really tough cases for the players union. They filed an appeal for Rice because it’s an indefinite suspension and, I assume, because Rice was cut and won’t be paid for games. (He’s received about $22M from the Ravens since 2011.) Peterson is being paid so I’m not sure what the union can do.

That’s a good point, @LakeWashington‌ . Goodell announced the league’s new policy with much fanfare: 6 game suspension for the first infraction, termination for the second. In neither the Rice case nor the Peterson case have they followed their own rule. One suspects that the league and the teams are reacting in panic, since they seem to lack any discernible moral compass.

I heard on the radio that the player’s union is saying Rice was already punished (the 2 games, I think) for his actions, so this new suspension for the same incident constitutes double jeopardy.

@LakeWashington Actually, AP consented to the “suspension”. Basically, the team says that they want someone to be exempt from all activities and the player and the commissioner have to sign off on it if I’m not mistaken. It happened with Jonathan Vilma and Michael Vick.

Double jeopardy applies in the criminal justice system, not so much in the NFL’s disciplinary schemes.

Amidst this sad state of affairs, does anyone else find it amusing that with every press conference so far NFL people have uttered the exact same phrase; “we want to get this right.” Minnesota, Carolina, Arizona. It’s comical to me because obviously it’s a script from Goodell’s office. Well, maybe not obviously. In any event, it’s a day late and a dollar short.
