Before my hip replacement which kept me sedentary for almost a year before I could have the surgery, my ortho asked me what my post-op goal was. I told him I want to cross-country ski again. I enjoyed downhill when I was young, but now I just want to be able to glide through the woods with more control over my skis and terrain, so I guess this is an adaptation I didn’t exactly connect with aging, just ability and safety but, obviously, they’re related. Thanks for making me feel old(er), CC. ![]()
@Nrdsb4 H and I are heading out to ski this morning. We have both skied for 50 plus years and spent many years skiing very difficult runs. Now I always check conditions before hitting the slopes and spend more time on the blue runs than black diamonds unless conditions are very good.
Totally agree with this. Last year was the first time I ever broke anything skiing, and I strongly suspect if I were younger I would not have broken anything in that fall. So after a year of pain and healing and PT and diet and exercise, was back on the slopes this year, but much more cautious and slower (purposely). And I skiied less overall- was happy to do grandma detail during the mow 3 yos nap time.
What a thoughtful, kind comment, @basket! Right back atcha!
Recently I was doing some kind of little fitness quiz and realized that it is really tough for me to do a burpee (aka mountain climber, squat thrust). Of course like most people I’ve always found them awkward… but noticeably worse now. So I’ve started to do some adapted “one leg at a time”, low impact versions to better track my range of motion. Hopefully they will get a little easier before someday getting harder.
The snow has been terrible in Michigan this year but we went xc skiing on Monday.
There are no happier people than on a trail in the winter.
It was a beautiful sunny day and although the trails kicked my butt, I was so happy.
It’s a very important part of us enjoying winter.
I believe this is universal truth.
Since I stopped working a couple years ago I play tennis almost every day. Turning 60 last year was tough for me. But I have had a great year. I am a good player and I play at a high level but this morning I got my a$$ kicked in doubles by a gal who just 80. She is phenomenal and my roll model. I went back to yoga in January to help with my balance and flexibility.
Over the years, I’ve given up running and all high impact exercise. I’ve found it pretty easy to find other things that I like to do instead. I’m okay with pivoting, and I probably will continue to pivot for as many years as I am blessed to live.
I didn’t start exercising with intention until I was probably 46 years old. I didn’t start running until I was 54. I just turned 60. I’m honestly not a fan of actually doing either, but I certainly know I feel much better physically and mentally when I just get ‘er done. No doubt, I would be distraught if I couldn’t do them, though. So, maybe I like them more than I am willing to admit.
There are all sorts of accounts on Instagram exercise, fitness, nutrition, etc for us older folks. I like that most of them emphasize mobility. Recognizing that perhaps we can’t keep pace with what we used to do, but that we can find other things or modify things so as to keep ourselves strong, agile, and mobile.
In a different vein - I am a guitarist. I have mentioned on CC before that I belong to a Facebook Group called, “Old Guitar Pickers.” I skew younger than most, but it really is hard to watch some of the older people in there lament the loss of their skills or ability to play altogether. Arthritis and other issues. It truly makes me appreciative that I can play. I don’t take that for granted anymore.
I have to do at least some high impact activity to help my bones, so I try to do some intermittent walk/ run on the treadmill. I used to be able to do the equivalent of a 5K but now I am still building back up after my injury, an now do only about half of that, plus some other stuff in the gym.
I have been working hard on proper posture since mid-December. I thought I knew how to stand properly, but I did not. I was doing a lot of planking and push ups, but my chiropractor has convinced me to cut back on those and replace them with more weight training. I’m always open to new ideas.
Care to share some of your favorite accounts?
I value your “likes”!!!
I wasn’t sure if that is allowed??
My favorite is fit_momof7
She just turned 60, and her mom turned 92 today! I think she was a body builder in her youth. She does have seven kids. She has adjusted what she does and often just exercises at home. She just feels accessible to me. Her mom didn’t start exercising until she was 65. She’s amazing to watch!
I also like ketofitjanet. She just turned 63 (?), I think?
I also follow ageingdisgracefully
When I clicked on their videos they don’t play. I wonder whether I have to follow them? I’ve never had that problem.
Thank you!
I was able to play the videos of ageing disgracefully
That’s the one I didn’t try!
Weird??
That shouldn’t be the case, as they are all public accounts.
Idk. I’m not very techie - sorry (maybe ‘ cause I AM old
)
Figured it out … my desktop was running slow and playing no videos. They play just fine on my laptop.
