Ask A Current Freshman

Hi new question: where is the best place to request for housing ?
I’m an incoming freshman in the honors program and i requested an honors roomate
i’m from out of state
What would you reccommend? I’ve heard that Cobb is where most honors students live, but Kenan looks beautiful (if that is even a freshman option)…
Help?

All residence halls (except for campus apartments) are options for freshmen, but some are a little harder to get. I wouldn’t recommend Cobb its kind of boring. Go for somewhere on southcampus. Avoid Craig at all costs it is terrible. Hinton James and Morrison are really good freshman excuse me, first year dorms as well as ehaus, horton, koury, hardin and craig north. The south campus experience is worth having.

When u get this error message, what do u do next?
Controlled Enrollment: see department.
Permission required for enrollment.

Should I just call the department or do I have to physically be on campus to be able to add that class

You have to email or call the department

thanks egghead

Anyone have any advice on work study that isn’t too strenuous and has hours past 8 to 5

someone asked a while ago about carolina kickoff:

it’s fabulous! a lot of my friends went when they were first-years & now they’re counselors for the program. they’re really fun people & it’s a great way to meet new students who will seriously become great friends :)

How high are the chances of getting into Cobb as a freshman if you requested a random honors roomate and put Cobb as your #1 choice?

I’m not sure what the exact odds are, but they seem pretty high. Anecdotally, all of my friends who did random honors housing last year were put on North Campus – most were in Cobb, with a couple in Upper and Lower Quads. I wouldn’t say Cobb is boring at all – there really a lot of freshmen in there, and there was always something going on when I visited friends there. Cobb seemed to be about 1/3 freshmen and 2/3 sophomores (that’s completely my estimation, and is based mostly on the two floors where most of my friends were), and believe it or not, you’re allowed to be friends with sophomores when you go to college. It houses about 400, so regardless of what the exact make-up is, there are always a lot of people around. Cobb also has a bunch of really nice facilities – tennis courts right outside, a movie room, etc., so there are a lot more opportunities to see people than there might be in other North Campus dorms.

On a more general note – I know a lot of people say that South Campus is the “freshman experience,” but take that with a grain of salt. No matter where you live, you’ll meet people if you’re mildly outgoing and you won’t if you sit in your room all the time. I lived on North Campus as a freshman, and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. A significant portion of my friends were other North Campus freshmen, and it’s so nice to be able to go out somewhere on South where it’s noisy and crowded, and then take the P2P to your North Campus dorm, which has (usually) quieted down by 3 AM.

And another plus – you have a HUGE advantage in housing for sophomore year if you’re already on North. By that point, even those who talk about the “freshman experience” are dying to move out of HJ.

I second what inmymind said completely. And also, my freshman year, my south campus friends always came up to north campus to hang out, not vise versa. I went down to south campus about four times freshman year and never felt like I was missing out on anything.

Same here. Not counting basketball games, mind you. ;)

Not to say I don’t believe that y’all had a fabulous time on north campus as first-years, but I seriously never, ever went to north campus to hang out or party, and I don’t know anyone who did. I honestly can’t remember doing that even one time. We always hung out in south campus suites and then took the P2P up to Franklin or frat court (which is an experience in itself)!

Also, I’m best friends with ALL of my suitemates from Ehaus last year (yeah, it’s rare to get along so well with all of them, but without such a nice support system from those girls, my life at college wouldn’t be as amazing).

I lived in Grimes this year (upper quad), and while the location and rooms themselves are fantastic, I felt pretty bad for the first-years on my hall because the dorm wasn’t at all social. Everyone kept their doors closed, and I seriously met only like 6 people on my hall of 30ish. I was friends with mayyybe 3 of those 6. I was lucky because I already had lots of friends at Carolina (being a sophomore), but the first-years didn’t get the social experience I got last year on south campus at all.

I’d have to agree with phonyreal and cloying. I probably went down to south campus to party three or four times at most all of last year. Pretty much every weekend, though, we had people from south campus pregaming or partying in our suite. I lived in Granville, not a dorm, so this could explain the variation.

All this talk about south campus makes me so excited for next year.

Is there cable in the rooms at UNC? (cobb in particular) Im just trying to figure out if its worth it to bring a TV. Or a gaming system while i’m on the subject lol

yeah, there’s cable–basic, but you’ll get all the channels you want/need. there are also several HD channels.

Is there an additional fee for cable?

nope; it’s included

Are OOS students allowed to ship things to our dorms before actually arriving on campus?

You can’t ship stuff to your room and have it in there before you arrive, but you could ship it right before you leave for school and then pick it up at the package center when you get there.
