Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

I received an email indicating that my application has moved to a second review. Can you tell me approximately what percentage of applicants that receive a second review are actually admitted?

Hi AdmissionsStaff,

My application was in on Feb 15th as well as my recommendations and transcripts by March 1st
I just have a few questions

1) The website says that SAT scores do not need to be submitted if you have completed 45 credits at another university. Is this true? I have read in another thread that they are required no matter what.

2) I have a 3.8 GPA at Brookdale Community College, will have 60 credits complete by the end of this semester, volunteer with my local GirlScout community and have been working consistently at multiple jobs. What is the likelihood that I will get accepted?

I’m freaking out just a little!

Thank you,

Alyssa

Thank you! I can’t wait to hear back!

Hi Jeriko! This year, we sent out many more second review emails than ever before, so we aren’t sure on what the % of admits from that is exactly. I’d imagine it will be somewhere around 50%.

Hi Alyssaalves1! SAT/ACT scores are required for freshman applicants. They are only required for transfer applicants if the applicant has fewer than 45 credits at the time that they are applying or has graduated from HS less than 5 years ago. If you have 60 credits from BCC, then the SAT requirement is waived for your application.

Unfortunately, due to the holistic nature of our review process, I’m not able to rate your chances over CC. With the transfer review process, the number of admits depends on the major that you are applying into. Each semester, all the departments let us know how many transfer students we can admit into each program for the upcoming semester. This number varies each semester. If you had all your documents in by March 1, you are guaranteed a decision by April 1. It’s coming up soon! Hold tight just a little longer.

Hi, have all honors college invites gone out?

Hi Science4! No, not all honors program invitations have gone out. They will continue to come out with admissions and scholarship decisions over the next month.

Will financial aid offers come out with admissions and scholarship decisions? Also, if you applied to an accelerated program and planned to go into a major that is full, would that have any impact on whether or not you are accepted in to the 3+4 program?

My son applied to TCNJ for biology, we have not heard from the college and understand that admitted students day is 3/31/12. Should we be anxious?

Hi Ialan137. Financial aid estimated award packages will come out starting in the next few weeks. If you submitted your FAFSA before the priority deadline, you should be hearing from that office soon. In all the majors offered with the accelerated 7 year programs, we save a few seats for the students accepted into the accelerated program.

Hi Jisito. I wouldn’t be anxious just yet. We are doing our best to read the last group of applications and notify students before Accepted Students Day so that they can attend. If you suspect that his file may not be complete and that is what’s holding up his decision, you can check on PAWS, or call us at 609.771.2131

Hi, I was accepted and paid my deposit but I still have the option on PAWS to accept/decline the admission. Is this just because the payment hasn’t processed yet?

Hi Eal94! Congratulations! Without looking at your account, that would be my guess. If it still says that in a week, I would give us a call at 609.771.2131 so that we can check it out.

Thanks again!

Got the “TCNJ Second Review - Additional Information” 2/13. (No other school has made such a request - only TCNJ; not UVA; not PennSt; not Stockton; you get idea.) Got the ack for the info sent 2/27. For a combination of reasons, TCNJ is a first choice, but some of those other schools that said “yes” as part of regular decision (not ED) are requiring non-refundable deposits, up to $500+, BEFORE the April 1 date TCNJ has set for sending all responses. What can be done to avoid “wasting the cost of an iPad” while waiting for TCNJ and yet not be shut out in the event of a refusal by TCNJ? Education shouldn’t be a game of “chicken”. For the future, the TCNJ admissions office should consider collecting a “yes/no impression” from the evaluators when the “second review” is decided upon and then follow-up to see if this second review has enough impact to change a substantial enough number of those earlier “yes/no impressions” to justify the anguish the current implemenation causes. Given the number of applciations TCNJ receives, my guess is there is no real benefit to the second review. The current system is inconsiderate to the applicants and their families.

When will we be getting email/login information for our accounts? Also, if we know someone that we would look to be our roommate, are we allowed to choose or do you pick for us? Thanks!

Why is the enrollment fee $600? Is it because I applied ED? My brother’s Deposit Fee back in 2009 was $300 (regular decision).

Hello
I know you superscore the SAT. Do you also superscore the ACT? Thanks

I did RD and mine was 600 too. Must be rising costs.

Hi Fossil2u. Many schools, perhaps even the ones you have mentioned, have a second review process. The difference is that as a courtesy to our applicants, TCNJ chooses to notify students that they have been placed in this second review phase and allow them the opportunity to send additional information to strengthen their application. All students who receive that email are still in an active review process. We certainly have a general idea of what a student’s decision will be but are looking for a more information before we make a decision. Any additional information can sway the opinion of the first review and affects the final decision.

The colleges and universities that you say are requiring non-refundable deposits of $500+ are being unethical. The national deposit deadline for colleges and universities is May 1st and no college or university should require you to pay your deposit before then. This is established so that more competitive colleges like TCNJ can give each application the time it needs and deserves to have a thorough review before making a decision.

Hi Eal94. You’ll be receiving your official TCNJ ID at the start of the summer. When you fill out your housing survey, I believe there is an option to select a roommate preference, but it is not guaranteed that you will get who you request.

Hi Senioritis12. For various reasons, we’ve had to increase our enrollment deposit over the years. This is a deposit on your tuition so that $600 will not be included on your fall tuition bill this summer.

Hi Goldendog1. We only superscore the SAT. For the ACT, we are only looking at your composite score.

Hi.

It has been over a month and I still haven’t heard about a scholarship. My mid-year reports were sent out late, but I still thought I’d get something within a few weeks.

Hello! Does TCNJ accept credits from college classes taken while in high school?
