From someone in similar situation, I believe it really depends on the major more than anything. We thought my daughter would be an easy in because she has 42 completed credits plus 24 in progress, graduating with an A.S. degree with a 4.0 in a few weeks. In addition, she is still only a high school student, so she is considered advanced and rare to have accomplished her Associate’s early to be able to transfer in 64 credits as a freshman. Other colleges have offered great merit scholarships to her for her accomplishments, yet, she is on a wait-list for chemistry here because TCNJ does not have space, which kind of befuddles me. I think current students who declare after first year get first dibs, so new applicants either from high school or college may not even be able to get in even though they have straight A’s with 4.0 GPA like my kid does. What TCNJ does is to give the option of changing majors or going in as an undeclared if they like your credentials, but that can present a problem since they say you are not guaranteed your major change later. With so many credits completed, the only courses remaining are really major specific, so it can be a dilemma. So, my advice is to ask admin for approx # of spots for the particular major(s) you have in mind, and try applying but don’t get your hopes up because waiting in limbo despite being a stellar student is tough. Try sooner if you can afford it so worse case is you can try applying again later if need to.

Please excuse me; I’m new to this tech stuff. My prior post was in response to psk314.

My son has been accepted as a finance major in the business school. He is now thinking he may want to major in accounting. Would it be a problem changing from a finance major to an accounting major?

Dear TCNJ,

For wait listed students, what do you recommend? Waiting till the final results come out or accepting other college offers? My child is still waiting for the final decision but May 1 is approaching soon and deposits are to be made ASAP. But my child is still very interested in TCNJ. Any suggestions?

Hi Nym27Jrey - TCNJ is a NJ Stars II school. Stars I is for county colleges.

PSK314 - The more college credit you have, the less we focus on your SAT scores and high school transcript during the transfer admissions process. Certainly, if the major you are applying into is particularly competitive for that specific semester, we may put more weight on those scores and the HS transcript because we need more data to make a decision. Transfer admissions acceptance rates changes on a semester to semester basis.

Collegemomx3 - Check over on the ‘Ask a Dean’ thread. Dean Rifkin got to my email inbox this morning before I checked my own thread so I answered that question over there, but certainly, being an engineering student at TCNJ without the education would be a great move. It’s a very strong program.

Hi Karensue2. If your son wants to change his major before he enrolls at TCNJ, he can give us a call at 609.771.2131 and we can give him the steps to make that request. If he wants to start in Finance and then switch to Accounting, that switch would be made directly through the School of Business. You’d have to speak with someone over there to see how difficult that switch is and what they are specifically looking for in the students who make that request. I do know that because of the course sequencing, the School of Business only accepts requests to change to the Accounting major in the late spring to switch for the fall. You can call the School of Business at 609.771.3064 or email them at business@tcnj.edu

Ohwhatsherface - I would certaily recommend making sure that you return the card at the bottom of your letter so that we can place you on the wait list. When looking to pull students off the wait list we look for a blend of students who are strong and students who have continued to express an interest in TCNJ. Certainly, giving a call to the Admissions Office at 609.771.2131 or writing an email to TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu would be the best route for that. I would also recommend holding off on depositing at another school until close to May 1. Chances are, if we are able to pull students off the wait list, it will be after May 1. There have been some instances in the past when we’ve been able to pull students off before May 1 so to avoid double depositing, we suggest waiting until the very end of April before depositing elsewhere.

I am hoping you can help! I made several calls yesterday, including to the Admissions Dept., Residential Life, and the Honors Program, but got conflicting answers.

I would like to know whether students who have been accepted into the Honors Program are required to take an Honors First Seminar Program. Also, are they required to live in Honors Housing?? Where will Honors Housing be located for the fall since I understand that Cromwell is being renovated.

My son is trying to get a handle on what the true advantages are to being in the Honors program. Any help you can lend would be most appreciated!

Hi colparrq!
Based on what we were told on Admitted Students Day, they are not required to take honors freshman seminar, but if they do, then they have to live in honors housing. I have been told that honors freshmen will be housed in Norsworthy this year, but I would also like confirmation on this. Supposedly Norsworthy is one of the worst dorms on campus, and if this is true, how is this an advantage of the honors program?

Thanks for the quick response, SleeplessNJMom! I really appreciate you sharing that info. If that’s the case, then I guess I would not encourage my son to choose an honors FSP is that means he would end up with less desirable housing. That’s a shame…it seems that they should at least have some perks for being selected to the honors program. So far, I am not really seeing any concrete advantages. Am I missing something?? Maybe the Admissions Rep. could provide additional info for us???

Many thanks!

I agree, Colparrq, but I’d hold off making any choices until this is all confirmed by someone in Admissions. We are still on the fence about TCNJ so any advantages would help in our decision-making process.

Can you. Clarify the housing dorm. for the honors program. I am hearing that thew get the worse. Dorm.thanks

Sent from my LS670 using CC

Hi All, sorry for the delay in response.

Honors students are not required to take an honors FSP, but many do. Since all students are housed by their FSP program, those honors students taking an honors FSP are living with some of the other honors program students.

Housing is not an advantage to the honors program. It has not be confirmed where the honors FSP’s will be housed for this upcoming year. That being said, there are no ‘best’ or ‘worst’ dorms. TCNJ works hard to make sure that all dorms are well maintained for the same quality, cleanliness and safety for all students.

The benefit of being a TCNJ Honors Program student is the access to unique course offerings.

I am also the mom of an incoming honors student who is concerned about the dorm situation. I don’t know too much about Norsworthy, could anyone give me some information about why it is considered the worst dorm to be in? Also, will other freshman be housed there? Thanks!

Will the honors housing be confirmed before students have to register for their freshman seminars? It may be part of the decision-making process for some students.

Hi everyone. It is my understanding that the housing will not be confirmed before students select their FSPs. For more information, you should follow up with Residential Education and Housing at 609.771.2301. Whichever dorm the honors FSPs are housed in, there will be students from non-honors FSPs there as well.

Once we submit out deposit, what is the next step? Do we wait to receive a packet of information about housing and orientation, etc?

Congratulations Missy8! Yes, we will be sending out information about housing, orientation, class selection and ‘what comes next’ to all the students who have deposited after May 1.

I just want to confirm that a student at TCNJ would be able to major in Marketing and Minor in Chemstry.

Hi Lopez792. Since you will be transferring from an NJ County College, you can check out NJtransfer.org to see exactly what your courses will transfer as. Your CC credits will only transfer as .75 course units, but don’t worry, if you earn your Associates, you should be able to graduate in 2 years at TCNJ. You won’t improve your chances of being admitted with more credits, but the more credits you have the less we will focus on your HS transcript and SAT scores. Your freshman decision won’t have any factor in your transfer application. They are two separate review processes.

I just sent my 2011 Tax transcript and my tution deposit a couple of weeks ago. When should I expect a “package” or something from TCNJ with forms, etc.?

Nym27jrey, I can not counsel you about this over CC. You are going to have to call us at 609.771.2131 so that we can get more details to better answer your question.
