Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

Do you know approximately how many people are accepted into TCNJ’s Optometry Program?

Hi kkkkkkkk. Before I go into the number, I just want to make a clarification. For the 7 year programs (Optometry and Medical), it is not TCNJ that makes the admissions decisions. SUNY Optometry and UMDNJ decide who gets into their programs. They have a small number of spots available in their programs and accept applicants from a number of institutions like TCNJ where students will earn their Bachelor’s degree before going off to their respective medical school. That being said, this year, TCNJ earned about 7 of the 20 seats in SUNY Optometry’s 7 year program. Because each applicant pool is different, each year TCNJ earns a different number of seats.

Does TCNJ accept college credits from Middlesex County College? My high school offers a course on Anatomy & Physiology that can give me 8 credits (for a fee).

Hi Siameze! Yes we do. The general rule is that if the class is at the 100 or 200 level and the student earns a C or better, the credits will transfer in. For students who earn classes at NJ County Colleges, you can use [NJ TRANSFER: Linking New Jersey’s Colleges and Universities](http://www.njtransfer.org) to see how exactly the classes will transfer to TCNJ.

Hi TCNJ Admissions,
I have a question about an email that I received on Thursday about 25 students who were admitted but we not given on-campus housing. Is there any possible way that I would still be able to get on-campus housing (since I will be a freshman)? Also, if not, is there a popular apartment that many tcnj students stay in? I tried looking for some apartments but I don’t really want to be the only tcnj student or only freshman there :/

Hi TCNJRocks. This is a special offer for a select group of students and so, for these students, there is no on-campus housing for the first semester. We recommend checking the Residential Education and Housing website for tips and opportunities. [Off Campus Postings | Off Campus Housing Options](Off Campus Postings | Off Campus Housing Options) I hope that helps!

Hi I am going to be a TCNJ Undergrad in the fall. I was just invited into the Honors Program a week ago. I decided to room with a nonhonors classmate before I knew I was accepted and I would still like to room with her. I heard that nonhonors and honors room in different buildings based on their fsp. Can my potential roommate pick an honors fsp? if not can i choose nonhonors fsp? if i do not take an honors fsp what are my other options?

Hi,

I’m an incoming freshman to TCNJ. I have a question about changing majors; is it frowned upon in TCNJ to want to change majors?

Also, can we change our major before the Fall semester starts or do we have to wait a whole year before we can request a change?

Hi,
I was wondering if you could tell me the med school acceptance rate of TCNJ?

I was told that 85% of TC N J applicants get placed.

Sent from my LS670 using CC

Fieldhockey12, congratulations on your acceptance to TCNJ! We’re excited to have you in the fall. As an honors program student, you can certainly choose a non-honors FSP, but someone who is not in the honors program can not pick an honors FSP. You can choose from any of the FSPs available this fall. All students are housed by their FSP, but it is not necessarily separate buildings for honors and non-honors FSPs.

Hi Keysuponthetable! Congratulations on your acceptance to TCNJ! It is not, by any means, frowned upon to change majors. At this point all incoming students are locked into their majors until the end of their first semester. Once you start classes in the fall, you can work with your adviser to change your major for your second semester.

Hi Sc9423 and Jisito! Students going through our Medical Careers Advisory Program have about an 85% acceptance rate into medical schools across the country.

Thanks so much for answering, it was bugging me for a while haha

Hello, this is somewhat of an embarrassing question, but do the showers in the various first year dorms have some type of cover/door/curtain? I didn’t get a chance to see them during my tour, unfortunately, and I’m a bit of a phobic when it comes to such … personal hygiene. I don’t mind communal bathrooms, but communal showers are a different issue. I really wish I had checked them out before applying because then I wouldn’t have to ask this on a public forum.

Anyway, I look forward to attending TCNJ greatly!

Hi TCNJAccepted. Yes, of course! All the showers have a curtain or door.

Thank you for the fast response! I had one more question,

Is it true that if you’re taking an intensive language course with no prior education for it that you don’t have to take a foreign language placement exam?

Question regarding liberal learning courses.

My son is trying to register for his liberal learning fall semester classes. He is a history secondary ed major and would like to also minor or double major in Economics. He placed out of the beginner level languages so he has to select 2 liberal learning courses. He took the AP Micro & Macro exams. Since he will not know his score until July, how can he register for Economic courses? He said all have Econ 101 or 102 as pre-req, which he may place out of with the AP exam. He wants to pick the right LL courses in order to have the double major or minor. Will the advisors work with him during orientation on any schedule changes, or should he talk to an advisor prior to orientation? He isn’t sure what LL course to select.
Thank you!

I am at Brookdale Community College and I want to transfer into TCNJ’s engineering school. According to njtransfer.com and my school’s transfer counselor, TCNJ doesn’t accept Brookdale’s engineering courses. So would an A.S. in math or physics (60 credits) be a good program to transfer into TCNJ Engineering?

Also, the only information concerning the competition for the program are that it is “competitive” and you need at least a 3.0. Can you share the average GPAs of accepted transfer students? If not, can you ballpark the average GPA of past acceptances?

Hi TCNJAccepted! You got it. If you are starting a new language, you do not need to take a placement exam.

NJxcdrmom - Right now, students are placing courses they would like to take in their ‘shopping cart’. New students are not officially enrolling in any classes. Records & Registration will enroll students in their classes and these final schedules will be reviewed with the department chair (who will be their adviser until they are placed with their permanent adviser in the fall) during Orientation. At Orientation we will have a final transcript with AP grades to make sure students are not retaking classes they’ve already received credits for.

Hi Najfe3434 - TCNJ’s School of Engineering is currently working on an articulation program with Brookdale specifically for engineering. I ask that you contact our School of Engineering directly to see what academic path you should take based on your academic goals. Their phone number is 609 771 2538.

Hi - can students major in nursing and have room to minor in something else?

Hi Siameze! You sure can! Make sure when you come to campus in the fall of your semester year that you talk with your adviser about that. He/she can help you to make sure the classes you take to satisfy your minor also satisfy your liberal learning requirements so that you can graduate on time.
