Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

hi I just received my act score back and I know you only look at the sat critical reading plus math score. does this hold true with the act also? I received a 29 composite with a 33 in math and a 28 on reading. When averaged, it comes to a 31 which is a mid 1300 score. Do you calculate it or do you look at the composite act score only?

Hi Jerseyboi! For the ACT, we only look at the composite score. We do not look at the scores of each individual section. I hope that helps!

I know that for some colleges, a high English or writing score on the ACT can excuse you from taking certain required writing courses freshman year. Is this true for TCNJ? Thanks in advance!

Sorry to bother you again. I noticed that you recently noted that you solely look at the composite score for the ACT. However, on the Common App it asks applicants to state their highest score on each section from different ACT tests (as though it were super scoring.) Do you not pay attention to this, and would suggest that I only submit my test with the highest composite score, regardless of the fact that I received higher scores on certain parts during different tests?

Hi Justsmile1! To test out of WRT 102, the freshman writing class, you would need to have a composite score of 26 on the ACT or a 580 in both the Math and Critical Reading section of the SAT. Despite what the Common App asks for, in Admissions, we do not look at self-reported scores. We will only evaluate offical score reports that come directly from your high school or the testing agencies.

Hello- In terms of FSPs, if a student is both a Bonner Scholar and accepted into the honors program, is he or she still required to take one of the Bonner FSPs or does the individual have the option to choose an honors FSP & live in honors housing? Thank you!

Hi, some questions about the IMM program at TCNJ:

is taking Calculus in high school is required?

is any after-college employment data available? what’s the % of students finding jobs after graduation?

what is social life like at TCNJ? what about the commuting students?

Thanks.

Hi Volunteering101! You will have to take the Bonner FSP. It is required for all Bonner Scholars. The Honors FSP is optional for Honors Students.

Hi Emily0722! Calculus is not a requirement for IMM majors, but we like to see students who continue with a 4th year of math through their senior year. If you aren’t taking Calculus, I would recommend taking some sort of Math, or fill that time slot with an academic course.

There is plenty of data on post-graduation employement. It can be found on our ‘One Year Out Survey’. Follow this link to see the data: [2010 One-Year Out Survey Results | The Career Center at TCNJ](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey)

There are over 200 student organizations on campus, so there is plenty to do. As an Admissions Counselor though, I leave campus every day at 4:30, so I can’t give the most accurate idea of what the social life is like. To better answer that, I would recommend coming to campus and chatting with some of our student ambassadors.

Thank you very much!

So sorry, one more question: how early in the Fall can one apply to TCNJ? Does applying early decision give you any advantages? Also, would you happen to know how large the enrollment is for the IMM program and is there an internship/co-op option offered?

Thanks again!

Emily.

Hi Emily! You can apply as soon as our supplement opens, which is usually September 1. Applying ED lets a college know that you are serious about enrolling and therefore there is a slight advantage. The IMM program is intentionally small at about 15 students each year. We have over 400 recruiters come on campus and a Career Center that helps students find internships, so our IMM students, just like the rest, have the opportunity to intern anywhere they would like!

Thank you again! Does the small size of the program mean that it’s really difficult to get in?
Are there any statistics available as to how many students apply each year to the IMM program?

Hello! My daughter is interested in the education program. I was wondering if the 5 year program is more competitive than the 4 year program. Are math, science, psychology less competitive than English, history in the 4 year program. Could you let me know the breakdown and which are the more popular, competitive areas that more people apply to in both progams.

Also, do you consider grandparent legacy?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi Emily. The IMM program is no more difficult than any other program to get into. We see that program having an acceptance rate of about 45%.

Hi Sammom2. Special, Urban and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education are only offered as 5 year programs. Early Childhood and Elementary are only offered as 4 year programs. Since TCNJ started as a Teacher’s College and is well known for it’s Education Programs, they all are competitve with an acceptance rate averaging 45%. Grandparents are not considered legacies because that information is not made available on the Common Application anywhere. Parents and siblings are considered legacies. I hope that helps!

hey tcnj what’s your average sat/ act score and the high and low.

thanks for your help

Huge thanks again!

Hi Jerseyboi! The middle 50% for SAT (Math and CR only) is 1220-1380. The middle 50% for ACT is 27-31.

What are the average statistics of the students admitted to the honors business program??

Hi iwannaSUCCEED! Are you refering to the Honors Program at TCNJ or the Business Honors Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi? Since students apply to DSP after they are already on campus, I’m not sure what the average stats of that group are.

In order to be invited to apply to TCNJ’s Honors Program, this year’s applicants typically needed a 1400 on the Math and Critical Reading sections of the SAT (31 on the ACT) and 10% of their graduation class.

Could you tell me when the application for the 2013 will be started? Is there any changes for stats requirement? such as honors program and 7-year medical? Thank you.
