Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

Hi,

So I am a high school senior applying Early Decision to TCNJ. I sent in my application on October 27. How long will it take for me to receive my PAWS account? Also, does applying Early Decision truly increase my chances of getting in?

GO TCNJ LIONS  !

Hi Brookdale93 - We consider the classes you are currently taking, so you should make sure to write them in on your Common Application. We are going to look at your total credits when determining if you need to submit an standardized test score, so regardless of how many credits transfer, if you have 50 credits by the end of this semester at BCC, then you will not need to submit those scores. We do not look at what credits a student will be transfering in during the admissions process. That determination is made by a separate office and is only done to students who have been accepted to TCNJ. You can certainly apply into the Interdisciplinary Business program. You will simply select that as your major on your Common App supplement.

Piccio27 - We sure do! Follow this link to the Elementary Education website: [Elementary and Early Childhood Education (EECE)](<a href=ā€œTCNJ | The College of New Jerseyā€>http://eeced.pages.tcnj.edu/)

Sydjc22 - That’s to hear! True to all schools, there is certainly an advantage to applying early decision. You are letting the college know that you definitely want to be there, as applying ED is a binding contract where you promise to enroll if admitted. At TCNJ, there is only a slight increase in the acceptance rate for ED applicants.

I applied early decision and was wondering if you ever let students know if they were accepted before December 15th?

Hi Jdog1202- That’s great to hear that you applied ED! Due to the time it takes to review applications and the fact that we will review all applications before notifying anyone regarding their ED decision, we are unable to notify students before December 15th. Don’t worry, it will be here before you know it!

Hi, since the Spring 2013 transfer application deadline has been extended to Nov 9, will we still get decisions by Dec 15? Also, will the self-service on PAWS update and show the decision whenever it’s made and how long will it take to get a financial aid award letter if and after being accepted? Thanks!

Hello,

Is the admission decision based on the 9-11th grades transcript? Does TCNJ request mid-year transcripts as well?

Thanks.

Emily.

Bigman92 - For our spring start transfers, we will still be notifying students with decisions by December 15th, regardless of the pushed back deadline. Decisions will be in PAWS once they are in the mail. Typically, they’ll hit PAWS accounts a day before they get to your mailbox. Financial Aid notifications will be sent out very soon after admissions decisions.

Degoryglory - I’m sorry, due to the holistic review process, we are unable to evaluate admission decisions over CC.

Emily0722 - Our admissions decision is based off your entire folder. We will be looking at your grades from 9-11th grades but also evaluating your senior schedule. We will take your mid-year grades into consideration if you send them in.

Thank you very much!

I am currently a senior in high school who is applying Regular Decision to TCNJ. I was wondering, do AP courses still benefit applicants if they receive some Cs as final grades in those courses? My junior year, I had a heavy course loud and only achieved C+'s as final grades in AP U.S. History II and AP Calculus AB. My other grades were all As and Bs. Will my C+'s still be to my advantage since they were achieved in AP classes?

AdmissStaffTCNJ - thanks for all the insight into TCNJ.

I have applied as an OOS student and I’m wondering about housing for OOS students. I know that OOS is guaranteed housing for 4 yrs but I was curious as to how it worked with regards to OOS requesting housing for years 2,3,4 in conjunction with instate students he may have befriended and wanted to room with. Could it be possible that OOS gets on-campus accommodations and instate friend does not?

Hi Blueberry94 - We love to see students who challenge themselves and take AP classes. We would love it even more if students in those challenging classes earned A’s or B’s. If a student is earning C’s in AP classes, we’ll look to see what they choose to do the following year and how they did in those classes. Did they continue with AP and then improve their grades, or did they drop down to honors and get straight A’s. There is no exact formula unfortunately. It’s all very specific to the applicant and the situation.

Hi MEsearch - It’s not guaranteed that the In-State friends will get a slot to apply for on campus housing, but in years past, all those who have wanted to live on campus, have gotten a spot so it’s been a non-issue.

Hello! I’m applying for Freshman admission for the Fall 2013 semester. TCNJ is practically my highest reach/ DREAM school. I have a 23 ACT score and a 3.43 GPA. I currently have straight A’s in all of my classes this year and am taking difficult course, (honors and AP). I highlighted reasons in my essay while I didn’t do well Freshman and Sophomore year. Also, my brother currently attends TCNJ. Would that help my chances upon admission?
Thanks and have a great day!

Hello, I know that transfer students aren’t guaranteed housing what are the chances of a student transferring in Spring who lives 55+ miles away can get housing and I read that accepted transfer students can’t apply to housing until the enrollment deposit is paid, but my concern is that someone who lives that far away, if they don’t get housing, the enrollment deposit is a waste?

Thanks!

My son just applied ED and I have some concerns about his chances. His junior year was very difficult because of some health issues and this is reflected in his grades. He was active outside school with work and other organizations in spite of these health issues. In his senior year, he did cut back on AP classes but tailored his schedule more toward his intended major and is not working. He had an issue in one class the first semester and it has already been corrected but shows badly on his first quarter report card. He very much wants to attend TCNJ, his older brother is currently a sophomore here, and TCNJ has one of the few programs ANYWHERE that he is interested in. Will any consideration be given for the problems he faced and is overcoming?

Hi Sph555 - I’m sorry, due to the holistic review process, we are unable to evaluate admission decisions over CC

Hi Psk314 - Unfortunately, the amount of students who get pulled from the housing wait list each semester varies greatly. Know that the housing wait list is ordered by distance from campus, so living 55+ miles away definitely works in your favor.

Hi 2BoyzMom - Certainly. Because of our holistic review process, we are able to take all of those factors into consideration. We will be looking for those sorts of notes in the counselor rec letter and personal essay.

Thank you. It means a lot that his experiences won’t cause another stumbling block for him.

How long should it be until I receive information about how to check my application status? I applied over a month ago and I still haven’t received anything in the mail to check if my scores, transcript, and recommendation letters have arrived.

Also, does having a sibling currently attend TCNJ count as a legacy or is that only for parents? Does that take into account for my application?

Thank you!

Does TCNJ want weighted or unweighted? Should it only include English, History, Math, Science and a language, or every class?

sph555 - It takes us about 4 -6 weeks to process your applicaiton. You should keep an eye out in your email inbox. That is how we send most of our communicaitons. Siblings who are current students (or alumni) qualify you as a legacy. It is just something else working in your favor. It will not make a student who is not admissable, admissable, but it could help someone who is on the bubble.

MomfullfoQs - We look at the individual grades in each class and the class rank. We are not focusing on the overall GPA.
