Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

Is getting an A in cp better than B In Honors or AP. also do colleges consider transitions. For example I moved from India to us and because of that I had really bad sophomore year grades. I have a GPA of 3.5. Do colleges consider that. I mean I am looking at ivies

PheonixTCNJ - If you would like to be considered for a different major or change your major once you’ve been accepted, you can follow this link and fill out the appropriate form: [Selecting a Major | Admissions](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey)

NPSoccer27 - I think that would be a great idea to send in those marking period grades. I would also suggest sending additional rec letters or a personal statement. You can email those to tcnjinfo@tcnj.edu

Jdog1202 - Yes, sometime around June, our admitted and enrolled students will have the opportunity to fill out a housing survey. In addition to the survey, students are also selected a roommate based on their First Seminar (FSP) Class. This is a class of 15 students that everyone takes in their first semester. It is a liberal learning course and is sort of like College 101. It helps students acclimate to the type of academic work that is expected of them while in college. There are about 4 FSP classes on a residence hall floor so your roommate is determined by your answers to the survey and the other FSPs on your floor.

Caitlin195 - Since we only have about 10 counselors in our office and over 10,000 applicants, we are unable to offer interviews to every one of our candidates and therefore do not offer interviews to any of our candidates. If you would like, you are welcome to submit a personal statement to TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu so that it can be added to your file.

snowyowl94 - Where did you get that quote from? All students who are accepted must submit a final transcript and based on what we see, we reserve the right to rescind any acceptances, but there is no formal calculation that we use. We look to see if the student maintained the same schedule that they had when they were admitted and to see that the student did not get a severe case of senioritis and start performing poorly.

Poppykid - Getting a B in an Honors/AP class is better than getting an A in a CP class. Because of our holistic approach to reviewing applications, we are able to take all sorts of things like moves (international or locally), deaths, medical issues etc., into account. We rely on the college essay and recommendation letters to let us know about those issues that may affect grades. These answers only apply to TCNJ admissions. You would have to ask the other colleges you are applying to in order to learn if they operate the same way.

Thank you for your reply. I found that quote from this link: [TCNJ Policies](http://policies.tcnj.edu/policies/digest.php?docId=7823). I clicked on “View Policy” and it was in there under maintaining academic standing. I understand that there is no exact calculation for rescinding acceptances, but approximately how much of a drop in grades is considered acceptable? For example, would dropping from around a B+ to a B- or C+ be considered acceptable, especially if they were challenging classes?

Hi, I was admitted to the business school early decision and I payed the $600 enrollment deposit on Sunday. I had to go off what my friend in America said about the price because I live in Hong Kong and the letter probably won’t arrive here for another week.

Now, 3 days later, I haven’t gotten an email about my deposit and under “Accept Admission” on PAWS, the acceptance notification is gone. I may be acting a bit paranoid here, but is this normal? I am just nervous because I still haven’t gotten an official email or letter from TCNJ saying that I have been accepted, I just saw under Accept Admission that I was offerred admission. Also, it is very possible that it was more than $600 dollars or I forgot to pay some other fee. If that’s the case, please let me know and I will contact someone. Thanks so much!

Snowyowl94 - I am getting more clarification on that policy for you soon.

RagingChickens - I would email the Admissions Office with your personal information so that we can make sure your letter got out. TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu. $600 is the correct deposit amount for our ED Admits. If you would like us to look into our system and confirm that the $600 was received, we can do that as well.

Thank you so much for your help, AdmissStaffTCNJ.

What would you reccomend a deferred student write about in a personal statement ? What are the chances of being accepted after deferral , if you could , specifically for the school of engineering. Thanks in advance !

Hi, I plan on applying to TCNJ as a nursing major. I am just wondering, how many students get accepted every year, and what is their average sat scores and hugh school GPA?

Here’s my information:
Sat total 1660
Math 630
Writing 540
Critical Reading 490

I know these are extremely low, but I do know someone who goes to TCNJ and has lower scores. I also do a lot of community service. Could this maybe help balance out my lack of high sat scores? I volunteered 60 at a hospital, I have done cheerleading for 12 years, coached for four, and was also varsity captain my senior year. I have participated in the Special Olympics at TCNJ and have participated in the senior olympics as well. I was in 4 breast cancer walks, 3 jingle-bll runs for arthritis as well as a walk for ALS. I also took both anatomy and chemistry my junior year and biology my sophomore year. I have done a few other things, but I don’t want to bore you, and I just want to know my chances for the nursing program. Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

I see on the TCNJ website that for freshman applicants it asks for a complete additional activities list/resume separate from the one filled out on the common app. I have already sent in my common app to other schools and in the spot for “additional information” I uploaded a document that is a continuation of activities from the one started on the common app activities section. I did prepare another complete resume for TCNJ with all activities listed on one document, but I do not know where I should attach this or how to submit it with my application. Should I mail it in separately? Please advise. Thank you for your time!

Hello, I’m thinking strongly about applying to TCNJ this year. Currently I am enrolled in Bergen Community College with a 3.7 gpa. My highschool gpa was a low 2.35, though my SAT scores of 1700, better reflect me. I was wondering what the possibility of my acceptance would be? Thanks.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Snowyowl94 - We are looking to see if you maintained your grades and the senior schedule we used to admit you. If a student drops from a B to a D, that is grounds for rescinding an acceptance.

TCNJDeferred - About 50% of those EDD students will be accepted in RD. A good personal statement would be one that lets us know that you are still interested in attending TCNJ, one that may explain any weaknesses in your application and one that updates us on any new achievements or awards.

Dionnadressxo - For our Nursing Program we accept about 150 students each year. Average SAT for the Nursing Program falls around our general SAT range of 1220-1380 (M + CR). Certainly all those ECs play a factor, but unfortunately, I’m unable to ‘rate your chances’

College13hopeful - You do not need to mail it in separately, but if you would like, you can send it to TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu and we will add it to your file.

Leonezone - I can not rate chances over CC, but there are a few things to keep in mind with Transfer Admissions. Acceptances are very much dependant on the major you are applying into. We only have so many seats in each major and the amount of available seats and applications for each major changes drastically with each semester. Also, we focus more on your college transcripts. We will review your HS transcript and SAT scores if you are required to send them in, but the more college credit you have, the less the HS transcript and SAT score factor in.

Thank you very much for your help, AdmissStaffTCNJ.

Two questions. First, will regular admissions be rolling, and if so when would that begin? Second, my student’s school does not report rank, however we have found out what it is from the guidance counselor. It is very good. Should we report it to you, or wait for you to check with the school? If we should, what would be the best way to do that? The student is interested in the Biology program, and we know that is extremely competitive and feel that this might help.

Hi LBJ1953 - We do not do rolling admissions. All students will be notified by April 1. If your school does not report rank, that is okay. We will be able to ascertain from the transcript that the student may be near the top of their class based on the grades and types of classes they took (CP, Honors, AP, SUPA etc). If the student is admitted and meeting the SAT/ACT criteria for scholarship, we will then reach out to the Guidance Office for rank. We will never request rank just for admissions, but we do require it for our in-state scholarhsips.

I am an Out-of-State Early Decision applicant, and I just finished my Out-of-State Merit Scholarship Application today. I am guessing that my application will not be received and confirmed until around Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Assuming that this is true, when do you believe that I will be notified or receive a letter regarding this scholarship? I know that scholarships are not due until February 1st. Does this mean that I won’t be notified until after February 1st about my scholarship? Or is there a general date when every applicant is informed?
Thank you in advance for your time.

AdmissStaffTCNJ you mentioned that you guys look at the individual grades that we received in our classes and school’s ranks rather than overall GPA. I’m assuming this is the same for transfer students?

I changed majors and schools, so when sending in my transcripts, how do you guys evaluate my situation? Can previous grades from my old major affect my chances of getting accepted to the program I want?

Also, is it possible to find out the average number of people who applied into your business school last year and the percentage of how many were accepted?

Thanks.

Does applying into a specific major change my chances of being accepted into the school? For example, I wanted to apply to the five year school counselor masters program. Is this a competitive admissions field? Am I better off applying into a less selective major and switching into this major in the future? Or, is it more difficult to get into this program later on rather than now? Thank you!

TCNJHopeful1 - Congratulations on your acceptance! Once we receive all the out-of-state merit scholarship applications that are due on Feb 1, we will review them. You will be finding out about your merit scholarship package soon after that.

RUhopeful - With our transfer students, we focus on the classes that apply directly to the major you are applying into, but we do use other classes (from old majors or otherwise) to evaluate how you are doing at the college level. Keep in mind, at TCNJ we have a liberal arts core, so all of our students are taking classes outside of their majors. We want to accept students who will succeed at TCNJ in all of their classes. With transfer students, the number of seats and applicants vary so greatly from semester to semester. We have to take into account how many seats there are available based on how many students changed out of a particular major and then how many students are applying. Last year’s numbers are no reflection of this year’s numbers for our transfer population.

College13hopeful - We review students by major, but a student who is admissible to The College will never be outright denied because of their major. We reach out to students who are good fits for TCNJ but for whatever reason, we can not offer a spot to in their top major and ask them to consider selecting a different major to be reviewed for. Each major has its own ‘change of major’ process. Some majors are more competitve than others to switch into once you are already on campus. For that reason, I would not recommend selecting a major you are not seriously considering to get into The College.

Hello! I sent my application about 5 minutes ago, I was wondering: Where do I find the EOF questionnaire? Also, if I do not send an activities list, would that affect my chances of acceptance?
