Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

My D just got an email today from TCNJ telling her that she is basically deferred and a decision will be made by April 1. We are in state and she has a 3.7 GPA, 1870 SAT, and great EC and recommendations. We visited TCNJ twice. This was quite disappointing. A friend of hers who applied early decision with similar stats was accepted. I’m left to wonder if TCNJ more readily accepts students who indicate strong interest on their application or who apply ED. She was accepted at Penn State, JMU, Univ. of Maryland, Rowan, etc. Any insight here?

Your daughter has been accepted to some very competitive schools, so has great options. I do think that TCNJ has gotten more and more competitive each year. They also look for the type of courses taken, not just GPA/SAT scores. Did you daughter take lots of AP and Honors classes, that plays into things too. I do think that TCNJ and all colleges have slightly lower targets for students that apply ED because they know they will enroll so this helps their yield stats. Another factor is major. Programs like Nursing, Bio and Pysch are more competitive than others. So while her peers at HS wth similar GPA/SAT’s may have gotten in ED if their course load was nore aggressive or if they applied to a less competitive major than your daughter the outcomes can be different. It is hard to compare apples and oranges. She has other great options, and the good news is she was not rejected, a deferral means she is still in the running. TCNJ makes decisions up to 4/1 from what I have read. Good luck. I was not aware emails were going out already for RD candidates. I thought that was not starting until 2/15.

Penmom- thank you for your reply. It is much appreciated. She has a total of 3 AP classes and 10 honors/accelerated classes. Her major would be criminology. I think April is so late to have to wait to hear back about a decision. She will likely attend one of the other schools I mentioned.

Can you see scholarship money through the online portal?

Ive applied for the spring semester 2013 and would like to know how long it takes for application processing, because I really need to start applying for the visa …I live in Saudi Arabia and it takes quite a long time to process visas. Also I would like to know exactly what date does the spring semester begin.

Thank you.

My daughter applied & was accepted ED. We immediately sent our deposit which has been cashed. Can you tell me when her PAWS access will broaden to student level access with class selection, etc. Thank you!

What exactly do you base merit offers on? We see different offers being made, and are curious on what goes into these decisions.

Merit Scholarships:
I am thrilled that my S was accepted to TCNJ, but concerned that his letter did not include Merit aid. Is it possible to be awarded merit aid if it was not included in the acceptance letter?

What is the most important thing for a deferred student to send to admissions ?

Hi all,

For those of your asking about decisions, we recently sent out a batch of decisions (accepts and denies). They are not in any particular order. We are not on rolling admissions so it does not matter when you applied. All students will hear by April 1st.

Emily0722 - My understanding is that your son will not be able to set up auxiliary users until after his TCNJ email is created. This will not be created until middle to late May after the regular decision deposits are due. Parents and guests are all welcome to attend Accepted Students Day and it’s programming. We hope to see you there! NMSC status does not affect TCNJ’s merit scholarship. You can add that to his file as an honor for his resume, but it is not necessary. If he would like, he can submit that in a statement to TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu.

Carly135 - If I’m deciphering your message correctly, I’m going to say that your daughter was not deferred - she was put in a second review. This is a common practice in college admissions, however TCNJ offers students the opportunity to know that they are put in a second review so that they may offer more information. Certainly, applying early decision is a great way to let colleges know that they are very interested in attending the institution and that works in the advantage of those students who apply early decision. There are plenty of factors that may have played a part in your daughter’s second review and any of our counselors would be happy to discuss those factors with you over the phone. You can call our office (609.771.2132) M-F 8:30-4:30
Neverxclarity – No you can not see scholarship money in the PAWS account.
Hoodahbaba – I’m confused. Did you mean to write that you applied for Spring 2014? All completed applications for Spring 2013 would have heard in December 2012. If you gain admissions to TCNJ, we will process a visa for you.
Caanco40- Congratulations! Her PAWS account will broaden when her TCNJ email is created. That will be in mid to late May.
Jcprusak – Merit scholarship information can be found here: [Freshmen Applicants | Admissions](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey) As you can see there are different requirements for our In-State and Out-of-State students as well as special scholarships offered to different cohorts.
Iluvdrew- Congratulations! It is possible that notice of merit scholarship will be coming later. If your son is an In-State student and his HS does not report rank, we may be waiting for his rank information to come in so we can see if he qualifies for scholarship. For In-State students we are looking for students in the top 10% of their graduation class and a SAT score of 1300 (M+V) or ACT score of29. If he is an Out-of-State student, he would have to fill out the application that was included in his acceptance packet.
TCNJDeferred – The most important thing would be mid-year grades and perhaps a personal statement explaining that you are still interested in attending TCNJ.

Hello!
I applied as a biology major for regular decision and I have never been so nervous to receive a decision. do you recommend sending in a personal statement to boost my chances? My GPA was not outstanding and TCNJ is my top school.
Thank you!

Dear TCNJ Admissions Representative, my son has been accepted and is very excited to be attending TCNJ in the fall! Before applying, he spoke with an Admissions Representative because he was not 100% sure of what he wanted to major in, and was deciding between Open Options in two different schools. The Admissions Representative advised him to apply to the school where he felt most strongly, which he did. Since the time he applied, which was toward the beginning of the school year, he is starting to feel as though he should have chosen the other school, but he is not 100% sure of that. What should he do? Should he contact the Admissions Representative and see about changing to Open Options in the other school? Or should he wait until he begins the school year, take some classes and be more sure of his decision? Please let me know what you advise. Thank you!

Thank you! S meets all the published requirements for merit, but the school refuses to provide rank. We know that he is at the top of the class, and will work with the counselor to see what they will provide to TCNJ!

Hello!
I received my second review letter last week. I already filled out and sent the survey and I am about to send my resume. I was just checking to see if there is anything else I can send to help with my admission request. Thank you!

I never received a survey for my second revision but just was notified that my app was being viewed again…is this a problem

Hi TCNJ Addm
My D just received acceptance to BioMed eng major. She is offered Merit grant along with a pre-printed form to be filled and returned( Questions about ‘Selective Service’…etc) .
If she returns this form will it be considered as her acceptance to the school ? I thought only out of state applicant need to send Merit grant acceptance.
I thought once you are offerd Merit Grant its honored until you formally accept the admission.
Bit confused please respond.

Collegerox2013- A personal statement can never hurt! You can email it to TCNJinfo@tcnj.edu and we’ll put it with your file.

j9btdh - Congratulations! I think your son should do whatever he is most comfortable with. All of our students are required to take classes outside of their major and academic school so he’ll be able to explore all sorts of majors and classes once he is on campus. If he is very certain he would like to switch schools now, he can call our office and a counselor will tell him to steps to do that. 609.771.2132

Trackandfield121- Whatever you can provide will help us when we pull your application up for that second review. In addition to that form we sent you and your resume, I would also recommend sending in a mid-year grade report.

TCNJDeferred- This is not a problem. The form is only sent to RD students put into a second review. We do not send it out to ED students who are deferred.

Involvedparent3- By returning this form, you are NOT committing to TCNJ. We send that form to explain the stipulations of the scholarship your daughter is receiving. The form is not due until May 1. In our experience, students remember to send in their enrollment deposit in late April but sometimes forget to send in this form at that time. Since students will not receive their scholarship without signing and returning this form, we encourage them to send it back as soon as they receive in case they decide to enroll at TCNJ over the next 2 months.

I understand that retention is a big issue in engineering – with women and minorities especially, but with all students – and some schools do a better job than others in improving students’ chances of sticking with it through 4 years – with small classes, advising, hands-on experience, internships. What are the engineering program’s retention rates? What is TCNJ doing to improve them?
