Ask Mike

I would like to commend CC for making the functions CTRL + I (italics) CRTL + B BOLD and CTRL U underline so readily available.

soul stealer - After growing up with my church across my street, I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and became an ATHEIST. I don’t believe in god because of all the hypocracies that the church has shoved down my throat have diluted me, I developed a liking for Nine Inch Nails music, and I am in the midst of teenage rebellion. If I was a betting man, which I am, I would venutre to guess that I’ll end up marring a jewish girl, who will raise any and all of our children jewish.

Venkat - tell your ubercompetitive friends you don’t really want to go with this girl… AND/OR… Find a new girl and just make arrangments to go with her.

Smallz - You are losing blood. Don’t die.

mike, why were u absent for such a long time?

Mike, i am so bored with life, school, and everything… How do I start caring again?

Dear Mike,

What would you say about this argument concerning symantics:

The Earth, unlike any other planet we know of, can sustain life. Since we humans have the biggest brains of all the animals on Earth, we are the smartest in the solar system. Our brains allow us to do anything & they put us above everything else out there.

^Obviously that last point had a positive connotation and makes us feel “special”. But what about when you say it like this:

All other planets that we know of are free of bacteria. They are smooth, clear, and not nearly as sickly as Earth. Unfortunately, the Earth has billions of squirmy, ugly, miniscule life forms that constantly eat each other and cause each other pain. However, let it be known that not all of Earth’s bacteria are harmful! Only a small percentage are slowly destroying the Earth & causing it sickness–we call those Humans. They are breeding at an extreme rate. This needs to be stopped!

^^When you word it that way, humans dont seem special at all, instead they seem, well, comparable to cancer.

What is your opinion on this issue? Is there a balanced way to look at it?

waoh! I was abt to debate, but I really can’t find enough evidences or facts in ur statement to make a comment, in fact, it’s hard to tell what u r even trying to propose! anyway, I guess u want Mike to answer it anyway ;)

asif - Although it may be hard for some people to believe, there are more important things than CC.

pyar - Either get exciting about learning something everyday or get a job.

mj - a lot of the first statement has to do with audience. It is written in the second person and appeals to our own vanity of a species. (Are other species vain?) The rhetoric is used to allow ourselves to agree with the premise of the author, because disagreeing who like to disagree with compliments. Modesty is not to be found on CC.
In the second paragraph, you are using more negative diction. Compare the words “smartest” and “put us above anything else” with “ugly”, “pain” and “harmful”. Humans are not really a focus of the second paragraph. In the part where humans are mentioned in conjuction with the subject of bacteria, there are quasi-contradicting statements

This doesn’t allow the reader to understand if they are a large problem or not, because although there are few bacteria, they are breeding expodentially, so will there be more possibly? Who is breeding at an extreme rate? Humans? The harmful bacteria? or Bacteria in general? I read this again, and it seems it is written from the point of view of the bacteria, but this is a silly fact, because the first statement clarifies that bacteria do not have the thought capacity to produce said statement, and secondly, humans are not reproducing at nearly the rate bacterium are.

I think overall, the second statement is poorly worded, due to a influx of unreferenced pronouns. The first one is appealing to an audience. If you were speaking to a bunch of coal miners, which of the following would have a better response: “Coal miners are the backbone of an industry.” or “Gay Marriage is ruining the fabric of American Society.”

Sorry if my 2nd paragraph wasn’t clear. My point was that humans=“bad bac”. By “they”, I meant humans. I was trying to imply that humans are the harmful bacteria.

but yeah. thanks for the input.

mike: do you support the United States’ role in combating global terrorism? Why or why not?

I know! In fact, I’m soon going to do ‘more important things’!
but, I just wanted to know like what specifically kept u away! That’s it.

say Mike: what causes people to act immature just in general?

Mike, what do you think of my new screen name, the reality show ‘hell’s kitchen’, monkeys, animal testing, perfume, and the universe in general?

Mike, how many pieces of pie are in a quart? Just give me a guesstimate.

mike,

Is it possible to rid the earth of all liars?

Dearest Mike,
I love you!
Love,
Venkat the Great (aka Venkz) ;)

P.S.
You da man!

PPS
How *****y is the whole transfer process?

^^ Thinking about transferring already? How do you know you won’t absolutely love Penn and make a bunch of friends and get to eat lots of yummy food and ace all your classes and get to eat lots of delicious food and find a significant other and get to eat FOOD?

food?!

I’m with sunshineyday. what the hell’s the point of living if you can’t eat delicious food every single day?! That’s why I’m gonna be at WashU next year!

WashU has good food? I’ll try to remember that for senior year.

If you want good food, Penn has all those food carts with tons of different types of food and Philly has lots of great restaurants. NYU is in a great location for restaurants. Cornell has some of the best cafeteria food. There’s probably more, but my mind is blanking. In conclusion, go to Penn.

Really, I’m sure I’ll love it, but that stupid MOWC is making me think I’m going to have a similar experience as her son.

Mike, do you have a facebook and/or myspace account?
