Asking for a teacher recommendation: Aspirations in Computing award by NCWIT

I’m only a sophomore in high school, but I really want to try out for this award. I’m pretty positive I know which teacher I’m going to ask: she knows me well and has had me for two consecutive years in a row.

The Aspirations in Computing award by NCWIT is for girls interested in computer science. As I searched around the website, I saw that only juniors and seniors seem to get this award… not lower classman (even though it says it’s for grades 9-12.) That’s why I’m a little hesitant to try.

However, I’m willing to give it a shot. I’m just unsure as how to ask. (I’ve never asked for a teacher recommendation before.) Should I ask her through email or in person? My teacher has classes right after mine and it’s kind of an lengthy explanation (if she ageees, I have to explain how she needs to sign up, what website, get her personal email, ECT.)

How do I word it? I was going to say something like: “Would you be willing to fill out a recommendation for me for…”

I feel like I’m overthinking this, but I don’t want to screw up as she’s my favorite teacher and I really care about trying for this award.

Posted this in another thread but would like to hear from non-computer science minded individuals. What has your experience been with asking for teacher recommendations?

Definitely ask her in person. Go in before or after school so that you don’t cut in to her class time. Be courteous and use please and thank you. Many teachers may ask for a resume/bragsheet to help them frame their letter, so be ready to provide one if needed.

When the competition is finished, whether you win or not, write her a thank you note for the letter.

That’s all you need. She’s written letters before, she’s not new to the game! You’ll be good to go.

Just ask…like the above poster said, ask in person and tell them you will send them a link to what they need to do.
Also you should talk to the teacher about what you have done in computer science.
