Astronomy?

What is the astronomy program at Yale like?

Astronomy is a tiny and unpopular major (just a few major in it per year). It’s also fairly prescribed, with few electives, although that’s par for the course for science courses here. The major might be great, though; I don’t know - you’ll get lots of individual attention for sure. The introductory courses are popular among non-science majors (Galaxies and the Universe, Planets and Stars). There are also two astro courses designated for non-majors, Archaeoastronomy and Frontiers & Controversies in Astrophysics, the latter of which is a very good course. The teacher of F&C is Charles Bailyn, who was considered for Dean of Yale and is a major figure here in making the sciences more accessible for humanities major.

Do you need any qualifications to just major in Astronomy? (I mean, it’s not a subject you can really take in high school, although my school is lucky enough to have an Astronomy Club.)

There are obviously requirements (certain math courses, astronomy courses) but anyone can major in it. The only majors that require application at Yale are art, architecture, EP&E and cogsci.

international relations too
