At least 9 dead in church shooting in SC

I’m wondering why Walmart (and others) don’t pull all this offensive crap off their shelves.

Is anyone asking them to?

I’m sure that if enough people are upset by it and make an issue of it, and they think their reputation will suffer more than the sales they lose, they will.

Note that CSA battle flags also tend to attract unfavorable profiling attention from police, according to Dale Carson in [url=<a href=“http://www.amazon.com/reader/1556526377%5DArrest”>http://www.amazon.com/reader/1556526377]Arrest Proof Yourself/url. I.e. black people are not the only people who tend to have unfavorable opinions on CSA battle flags outside of obviously historical contexts like history books, articles, and museums.

“I’m wondering why Walmart (and others) don’t pull all this offensive crap off their shelves.”

Why don’t you write them and express your disgust over their having this offensive crap on their shelves. Maybe you can be in the forefront of a new movement. You should contact Fox News, too. I am sure they’d be all to happy to report on this subject.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that members of the “Sovereign Citizen” movement brandish Confederate icons and that police officers approach cars with the Sovereign Citizen bumper stickers or Confederate icons cautiously when making a traffic stop.

504 Sarcastic much?

Already some of this is starting. My favorite legal blog is questioning why there are honors, awards etc. in the name of Woodrow Wilson who re-segregated the federal government.

Yeah, Woodrow Wilson was actually a Klan supporter and very racist. Most early twentieth century progressives were, being enamored of eugenics.

#504 Sarcastic much?”

No. You seem to think that Che stuff doesn’t belong if Confederate stuff doesn’t belong. Unless, of course, I am misreading what you have been saying.

If that is what you believe you should do something about it.

“Also seeing a proposal to ban Gone With The Wind (movie)”

That’s not a proposal to ban GWTW. It’s an opinion piece in the NYPost.

I know the taking down of the Confederate Flag from gov’t property has got a whole bunch of people panties all in a twist but you really need to get over it now.

GWTW is not going to be banned and the book is not going to be burned. And Mt. Rushmore isn’t going anywhere, either.

Why do some people get to be offended but others have to get their panties untwisted? Is there a daily ration of allowable sensitivities and if so, who stole mine?

I don’t know about your sensitivities (or panties) but some of the arguments on this thread (Dukes of Hazzard???) are so lame that to suspect twisted underwear is to be rather kind.

I originally asked @TatinG (and didn’t get an answer), but I’ll broaden it to anyone who’s upset about developments this week.

  1. Do you think racism is a problem in this country?
  2. If yes, how should we go about addressing it?

I’ll bite.
I think it’s safe to say it’s a bigger problem than most white people (I’m one) realize. Too many people think, we’ve got Affirmative Action, a black president, my cousin’s kid is dating a black girl – my have times changed. And they have – for the better. Just not enough, yet.

And we BEGIN addressing it by listening. How many times has white America truly LISTENED to what African Americans are telling us? Michelle Obama gets blasted in the media every time she dares to speak about racism she’s seen and experienced. Michelle Obama! A highly successful African American woman who made the improbable leap from south side of Chicago to Harvard Law! If SHE’s faced racism, what person of color hasn’t? And why is this so offensive and/or threatening to whites?

If we don’t listen, we don’t know. And if we don’t know, we can’t address it, let alone fix it.

@LasMa I do believe that racism is a problem in this country and no race is immune. I know that’s hard for many to accept, but is a reality . How do we address it? I think a good place to start is by being kinder to one another. Disrespect , rudeness and insults will solve nothing. Until everyone accepts ownership and opens their eyes, the problem will continue. IMO .

I would second @carolinamom2boys. Racial discrimination should not be tolerated by any group against any group. Same treatment, same standards.

Agree, @katliamom , that nothing will change until we (white Americans) are willing to look this in the eye and admit that this is a problem we’ve tolerated and turned away from. I too have had my eyes opened this week, @carolinamom2boys .

But I don’t think that we can honestly say that discrimination against whites is even in the same universe as discrimination against people of color. That’s an easy way of getting ourselves off the hook and once more turning away. But if we really want to heal this country, we have to have the courage to face the truth. Like the Southern Avenger did.

@LasMa I don’t believe that anyone would say that racism is by any stretch equal. All I’m saying is it’s pervasive among all races towards all races which is hard for some people to accept .It’s going to take work to resolve things and unfortunately it’s not going to happen over night.

"I guess this is the logical outcome:

Apple removes all games with Democrat Confederate flag from iTunes, including Ultimate General:Gettysburg war game."

It’s a free country. Apple can do that, just like the Christian bookstore down the street doesn’t have to sell Playboy magazine.

To all posters. I don’t know if you are aware but South Carolina is holding a Blue and White Solidarity Day tomorrow June 26 to show respect and support for the 9 shooting victims and to try and spread the healing across the country. For anyone who would also start the healing process, please consider wearing blue and white tomorrow to show respect for the shooting victims.
