At what age did you learn to read?

Just out of curiousity, at what age did you learn to read? I learned to read when I was seven. How about you?

i think when i was around 12

no idea, but i do feel sorry for whoever taught me to read. it must have been a major pain in the ass. i have the attention span that… o crap i started to think about something else.

I think I was 7. I learned to read at the end of second grade.

It seems that kids these days are learning to read so much earlier. I’ve tutored kindergarteners whose parents were freaking out because their kids haven’t learned to read yet…

I think I was around 5…

Oh. Compared to everyone else on this thread, I learned kind of early.

I was just a little younger than 3. (September 1992- I was born in Jan. 1990)
My parents documented my entire early childhood lol (first kid and all). My first full book was A Day at the Beach, Just my Grandma and Me by Mercer Mayer. By the time I was 6, I was reading at a fifth grade level.

I was special  haha Reading’s just my thing. And writing. But I didn’t really get into writing until third or fourth grade.

2 1/2, yet today (15) I’m awful at literature.

At age 2. 10

I was 3 or 4…and my first book was Go Dog, Go. Followed by tons of Dr. Seuss and Berenstain Bears…and then the Goosebumps books…yeah…I have around 100 of those R.L. Stine books.

I was 4 1/2 or 5

I was 4, I think–and I started first grade when I was 5. I read the whole series of “Honey Bunch” books, starting with “Honey Bunch and Norman”. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a parent. Anyone else remember these books???

I must have been 3 and a half or 4–I remember being in kindergarten and wondering why no one else could read. However, they all had my ass at coloring–I was terrible at that lol.

I was around 2, if I remember correctly. I learned to write a little before I learned to read. I had no idea what I was writing, but my mom says that I would make her write sentences on paper and then I would copy them…just 'cause I wanted to have homework like my brothers. This was all in Spanish, though. I don’t think I remember learning to read/write in English, lol.

I was about 3 or 4. My mom always tells the story of me being at preschool, and the teacher was reading the instructions out loud on the paper. She said to circle something, but the instructions said to underline, so apparently I corrected her. I don’t remember this at all, but it must have been a slap in the face to the teacher that her preschool student was correcting her.

I was two and a half.

No idea. Probably later than most.

5 in Russian. 6 in English.

Hmm… My parents said I taught myself to read when I was about 3. (Summer of '95)

People say reading turns you into a great writer, and according to my English teacher, I am, but that doesn’t translate into me liking it.

Wow, you guys are so early. Most of my college friends didn’t learn until 6.

WOW! This is the first time I’ve ever heard of so many people who began to read at 2–3. My D started at 2 1/2, and totally freaked me out. She wasn’t fully out of diapers when she began with reading signs at the supermarket. LOL, I remember muttering to myself at the deli counter, “where’s the turkey?” and D answering, annoyed “look, right there—T-U-R-K-E-Y—turkey” She was less than 3. Her first full book was The Foot Book by Dr. Suess. Ironically, even though she started so early, it’s her hardest thing because of a visual disability that makes it painful and difficult because her eyes don’t focus correctly. Her math SAT scores are 150 points above the reading! lol
