<p>What the Devil is the difference between an inorganic phosphate group (abbreviated Pi) and a regular phosphate group (simply abbreviated P)? I’ve read that an inorganic phosphate group is one that roams freely in its ion form in a solution (in my case, the cytosol), and that would make the organic phosphate group the one covalently binded to another molecule.</p>
<p>However, when adenylyl cyclase catalyzes adenosine triphosphate into cyclic adenosine monophosphate, it also yields pyrophosphate (PPi). What the deuce? How can an inorganic phosphate be bonded to another phosphate group? Ostensibly, my understanding of an inorganic phosphate group is distorted, so may someone please enlighten me on what defines this particular phosphate?</p>

<p>PPi is just convention. Or you can think of it as P (phosphate group) as a substituent of inorganic phosphate, Pi (HPO4 2-)</p>

<p>Oh another thing. To answer your question. There is no difference between a phosphate group and an inorganic phosphate group. They are the same thing.</p>
<p>You see the ATP to ADP + Pi thing which means that phosphate is a salt in solution in it’s inorganic form. Once it is attached to ADP, it is no longer “inorganic” so to say, it is now part of an organic phosphate ester.</p>
