Audition Crisis

Okay, so I just got the location of my NYU Audition in Chicago, and it turns out its not the same as my Evansville one…I’m not sure why I expected them to be the same, but I guess I expected them to be at least somethere in the vicinity of each other.

My NYU audition is at 8:30 on Feb. 1st. My Evansville Audition is at 9:30 on Feb. 1st. The NYU audition lasts until 1:30. See my problem? Not only are they 15 minutes away walking, but I obviously can’t go to my Evansville aud. if I do NYU. It doesn’t help that this is a three day weekend and I can’t call the offices to try and switch everything around.

Evansville doesn’t have an open time that afternoon, and so I guess my options are as follows:

1)Skip Evansville(and let them know I can’t come)
2)Skip NYU(do the same)
3)See if I can get a spot at the Evansville audition this weekend(1/23). Yes, this weekend…
4)See if I can do an audition Feb. 2 for either school.
5) Call each school and plead and plead and plead that I can send in a video of my audition. They probably won’t let me, but I might as well attempt.

I’m freaking out right now, and I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions? (And no reprimanding about this being last minute, please. Believe me, I know.)

Thanks!
-Alex

Skipping either school should be last choice. It doesn’t really matter that it’s a 3-day weekend. You have 4 days to recover, if you can.

Sounds like there is a 1/23 audition for Evansville and a 2/2 audition for both schools, right? All in Chicago? On Monday, call Evansville, apologize for your mistake, and see if there’s any possible way you can change to the 1/23 audition. If the answer is no, ask if there’s it’s possible to switch to the 2/2 audition. If the answer is no, ask if they might have any suggestions as to how you can work this out with them. If the answer is simply 2/1 or bust, then call NYU and start the same process with them.

You will not be the first person in the history of these schools’ auditions to make this sort of mistake. They probably don’t like it a lot, but your merit and talent as an applicant can easily outweigh any kind of mistake a high schooler makes when scheduling auditions. Just live and learn. It’s going to be okay.

Can you call Evansville this weekend, or would you just walk in? If you can call, start there, tell them the problem and see if they can help, either by letting you audition Feb. 2 or letting you come this weekend.

Otherwise, do the same on Tuesday, for Evansville, then NYU. One or the other may be able to help. (Could you do an audition at Evansville itself, if you live in the Chicago area?)

Last ditch, pick the one you’d rather go to and audition for them. You can always beg to send a DVD, but it’s a second rate option. If you get a helpful person this could all work out-- they must be used to dealing with such snafus. Good luck!

Oh, araby, I’m sorry that you’re experiencing additional stress at this very busy time of year but this is truly a lesson for those who are scheduling auditions in the future. It’s so very important to keep on top of audition dates, times, and locations, as well as how long you should expect to be there. All this information is readily available. NYU has never, in recent memory anyway, been a part of the Unifieds. They do their regional auditions to coincide in some places, as do other colleges.

One question I’d start with is, did you just now schedule your NYU audition, and that’s the reason that you are only now realizing the conflict? If so, then you may be able to change it by calling them first thing on Tuesday, since that may mean that they still have alternate slots available. I do admit that that would surprise me.

In any case, I’d start with Evansville(unless as I mention, you just scheduled the NYU audition) and see what, if anything, they can do for you. You’ll probably have a better chance to change things with them as NYU is usually very adamant about not changing audition slots once they’re booked. Perhaps Evansville has an opening in the Unified schedule, or maybe you could even check to see if a walk-in is a possibility. Failing that, can you audition for them on campus?

If there is absolutely nothing that they can offer you, then by all means, check with NYU. The worst they can say is no. At that point, if you are not able to switch either one, then you’ll need to make a decision as to which one is more important to you. I wouldn’t plan on the video option. Best of luck to you!

Thanks so much for the advice. In response to your questions, I didn’t just schedule the NYU audition, I just realized the conflict this weekend. I picked the time for my NYU audition, but when scheduling the Evansville one I just picked the date and there was no option to pick a time. They picked 9:30 for me.

I live in Indianapolis, so an Evansville on-campus audition would definitely be feasible. I’ve also already been admitted there academically and I know my counselor there personally, so maybe he could pull a few strings. I feel like I’ll have more luck to change this one, especially since the audition process is only 15 minutes long.

Thanks so much for all your kind words, support and suggestions. I’m going to call Evansville and then NYU tommorow.
