I happened to find information about our public high schools’ score data and have a couple questions:

Is an average of 1000-1080 a good average for SATI for a large public high school? (About 2000 kids–about 60% of entire school takes SAT and 30% of entire school takes ACT)

I live in the suburban DC area and there are a wide range of public schools. The average SAT in DC is around 800/1600 or lower. This continues into some of nearby suburban areas. In the best public schools and in the most affluent areas, the average SAT approaches 1250. Assuming you are on the 1600 scale, the high school you described is an average high school.

It’s almost exactly average for the Country. 1100 is above average,1200 makes a high school competitive, 1300 highly competitive. Then there is the TJ stratosphere of 1400 plus.

Your SAT range is in about the 50% range nationwide. Your ACT scores are within the 60% range nationwide. But that could simply mean a lot of your school’s better than average students chose to take the ACT which is not your school’s main test. Your test scores mainly mean your school is a lot like the majority of high schools in the US, which are considered, conceptually, to be doing fine.

The average HS in the US is doing fine? I beg to differ but Whaaaaat? We are the laughing stock of Countries all over the world. Our output gets more pathetic by the year. No child left behind may not be the answer, but we did need to do something.

I go to a HS where the best and brightest from the US meet the best and brightest from the wS. America as well. We are NOT doing fine sadly.

It is very hard to compare education systems between countries. The US is trying to achieve universal education of the entire population. In order to compare education systems, you have to do more than just compare scores on math and science tests. It depends on who is being taught, who is taking the tests in each country, and what the goal of education is in each country. Having said that, I don’t sense that things are going that well in the US high schools. I say this not because of comparisons between countries, but comparisons with the past. Even there, though, it depends on who you are talking about. Education in the US has improved tremendously for minorities in the last 40 years, but I think it has dropped significantly for whites. Overall, the rich are getting richer, and the well educated are getting better educated. This is what I mean by comparisons between countries. There is more to it than just simple test scores.

My school has a 1764 SAT average w (CR:577, M:613, W:574). I go to a small public school where on average 10% of the kids score 1400+ or today 2100+.

That’s great shark bite, but you probably won’t know how well it suits you until you see what college it gets you into, how prepared you are to do well at that college (or the one you’ll want to transfer to) to achieve what you want in life and so on. We Americans need to wake up in terms of how poorly we are preparing our generation to really compete in this world.

Wait…do colleges see your high schools average SAT scores because I think in seeing my schools average, my score would look pretty decent compared to how it may look in a private schools.

logisticswizard: My school’s middle 50% range (posted above) is included on the school profile, which is sent to colleges. I don’t know if that’s the case with yours, though.
