Hey I have junior with 3.75 GPA UW and 4.45 W and a 2270 SAT 1.

Buttttt, I have won several awards at my regional science fair, will enter my project in Intel STS and Siemens next year, hopeful to win. Qualified for USABO semis, I am ecstatic. Also rmedals in regionals in science Olympiad. Totally rigorous courseload, my counselor loves me, 250+ community service hours.
Quizbowl is my passion,
And I fence.
I still have time to take online classes to raise my GPA, if that's an issue.

I am applying Early Decision. I hope I get in!! :/

"Any truth to this statement, even If I made a point to explain that my grandpa died the day b4 exams? "

Even if your grandpa died before exams, getting a D raises high alarm to the admissions. Even getting a C is very badly looked at… But, it never hurts to apply. I wish you best of luck.

that sucks. but still if he passed away a week before hand i may understand. but the day before? should have slept adquately for the exam… not the best reason for a D

@LazyKid: really? I’m a junior and i’ve been getting straight A’s since first Day first semester.
I’ve taken several classes online to raise my gpa (through a special agreement with my principal)
Taking more now… I retook my D class (Honors Precalc) and aced it.
I hope this shows them that I actually was in a state of emotional trauma.

It rediculous to say that a family death wouldn’t influence someone’s state of mind when taking a test. My kids are very close to their grandparents, if they were to pass away it would definitely have an impact on them. Most people (adcom) would understand that, especially if someone has been consistently doing well.

OP - I would get your counselor to put it in your recommendation letter. I would also re-take that course over the summer to see if you could get an A on it. It wouldn’t necessary wipe out the D, but it would show you could master the material.

Question - if you have been doing well in that course, why would one exam bring your grade down to a D. Often a final only counts for at most 20% of your grade.

Actually I was borderline B- first semester, and C second semester. Failed the exam. So yea it’s a D.

I retook the course an aced it, but my counselor said she can’t erase the original grade. My gpa is high though. So yea nothing really happened, except that the original D is still there.

If you retook the course, and your counselor addresses the anomaly in his/her report, then you should be fine. Other than that little blemish, you sound like a quite qualified applicant, and you should have many fantastic opportunities ahead of you.

nothing big… ivies coming out this week but not looking for anything…
i got into u of chicago, rice, usc, uc berkely, ucla, ucsd, uci. waitlisted at northwestern, washu.

waiting on ivies and jhu

if you have enough money OP you should apply to as many colleges as you can rofl. serioulsy collegeadmissions are a crapshoot. people who are “less qualified than me” have gotten into some schools where i was waitlisted/rejected.
