Hi I’m currently a junior selecting schools with b.f.a. acting programs to audition for in the fall. I’m looking for quality programs, size really isn’t a big issue to me. I’m not looking for a school that has a .1% acceptance rate, but I’m not looking for a school that lets everyone in.

And think about what you mean by quality. That means different things to different people. My D was most concerned about the background and experience of the faculty and the curriculum that was to be taught. Other people may be most concerned about alumni and what they are doing, as a way to measure the schools quality. Or Does a quality acting program offer you opportunities to continue dance and singing training? My D also wants opportunity for that, but some actjng schools don’t offer that.
The more specific you can be in your questions the more we will be able to help you.

My son researched all the professors he could in each program. He wanted to be sure that they were still relevant and working in the theatre world.

And I want to make sure you totally understand, any program that is an audition is a long shot. Well known or not, big or small, once there is an audition component, your odds for getting in drop.

Pinned to the top of this forum is a post with instructions for reading the archived threads, which go back quite a few years. It is SO worth your while to read those! You’ll learn a lot about the programs and about the process. It’s crucial to know what’s out there and what you’re really looking for, and you’ll need to start by researching and looking at lots of schools’ websites. Good luck!

sherryjane37 - I do know DePaul is not easy; however, it’s the type of program I’m interested in.

Dramamom0804 - I am looking for how in depth the acting training is, the more rigerous the better. I also would be interested in the option to take some singing classes

BigMoose - The Theatre School at DePaul accepts 32 freshman each year. No more, no less. And yes, the training is very rigorous but it is strictly an acting program (no MT program) so I do not believe that there are any opportunities to take singing classes through the university.

I only mentioned that because you stated you wanted the option to take singing classes.
Like hopenest said, the acceptances thread should give you a good jumping off point for research.

Take a look at University of Michigan. BFA acting majors can take singing and dancing classes. It is an audition program. I would assume that most programs that have acting and musical theatre would have opportunities to take singing classes but you would have to ask

I’ll throw in the lesser known school. Take a look at Coastal Carolina University. They offer a BFA in Acting and one in Physical Theatre. The acting training is top notch. Acting majors can spend a semester at the Accademia dell’Arte in Italy, while PT majors spend their junior year studying there. Acting/PT majors can take voice and dance classes. All BFAs audition for all productions, and there is cross casting, so you have MTs performing in plays and Acting majors performing in musicals. Class size is small. Usually they look for an Acting/PT class of 10. The entire department is small, so you can’t get “lost in a crowd.”

The OP said “I’m not looking for a school that has a .1% acceptance rate”…not sure of the actual percentages, by Juilliard, CMU and Purchase have very low acceptance rates.

@bigmoose. Glad to hear Michigan is at the top of your list. My son will be starting in the BFA Acting program in the fall and is so excited about it. He loves to sing and dance also. If you live in Michigan it is a great deal…wish we did. Go visit the theatre department and check it out.
