Police arriving from all local counties, vehicles on fire, looting, numerous police injuries - this is out of control. Area is being described as west Baltimore.
City Hall is on lockdown - but the Orioles are still playing? News reports stating that the violence is spreading - not citywide - it’s groups of rioters in different areas. Police in riot gear moving to Camden Yards.
You know I kinda want to say I’m shocked at this kind of thing happening, but I would be lying. Taking into account the rising tensions between Police and Inner city communities…sadly I fully believe we’re going to see more of these events over the next few years…
What has happened to police officers today in Baltimore is just as unacceptable as what happened to Freddy Gray. I don’t understand why the governor hasn’t called in the National Guard. The aerial shots of the looting is astonishing .
I can see the grievances from both law enforcement and oppressed minorities but violence is not going to bring the solution.
Where TF is the governor? Why are we not declaring a state of emergency? The mayor…what possesses people to make such bad decisions. And hold on for more…Al Sharpton is on his way.
Truly sad, and I’m really sad for the store owners.
Holy cow! Anyone watching CNN? Those guys poking holes in fire hoses trying to prevent firefighters from putting out a fire, mobilizing the NG sounds good right about now.
I understand the police are trying to present a restrained response - and not go the militarized route of Ferguson - but when rioters start burning buildings? This has progressed beyond that stage. There is a residential senior center right next to the burning CVS - the firefighters are trying to prevent the fire from spreading.
Baltimore Orioles game has now been postponed - so the fans who made their way to Camden Yards need to get out of there safely.
Thoughts and prayers to any of you who may have family/friends in the area - even if you are not near the scene, hot horrifying to know this is happening in your city.
I mentioned upthread that D, a B-more city resident, had been visiting MIL for the weekend…I’m “happy” that she is still traveling on business and won’t be returning to the city until Wednesday. It’s kind of surreal for her to watch what’s happening from out of town.
This reminds me of the WTO mess which happened here 15 years ago. The peaceful protests were quickly overtaken by violence - mostly instigated by isolated gang thugs and out of town groups such as the Eugene Anarchists.
(Kid just replied that she is watching the news in shock. “glad I chose to live in this building!!”)
