Baltimore this weekend

Some things they’re generally not showing on the news. Both from earlier today:

(sorry, had to edit the serious one out, enjoy the funny one until I can find the other)

Sorry, nothing about this is “funny.”

GMT, I’ve been wondering how the rest of the world must be viewing this chaos in Baltimore, especially in Asian countries where this sort of thing literally never happens. It’s bad enough that certain factions of American politics rub their hands with glee at he opportunity these events have presented. But in other parts of the world, little knowledge of the historical and on-going socio-political complexity surrounding these events is available in order for them to parse what is going on.

Aren’t those tweets by Angelos from Saturday,? Before all this major chaos started? He sounds like a blowhard, probably making millions but pontificating about the plight of the masses. Maybe I’m mistaken on the timing so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on that.

I tried to find a good link to the Baltimore clergy marching for peace but the only one I could find talked about it while showing images of cars burning, or only showed it from a helicopter - so, the usual coverage sadly.

@sevmom, I’m not sure about the timing, but you’re probably right about it being around the time of Saturday’s Oriole’s game. He was responding to a radio sports commentator so maybe it was just one blowhard to another. He could have kept it simple and said, “don’t worry about damage to Camden Yards, it didn’t have it’s spine severed”.

Here’s another quote. From “that blowhard” Martin Luther King, Jr.

I think no one has been minimizing that Freddie’s spine was severed and that they need to get to the bottom of that. But I think people on all sides are agreeing that rioting and looting are not the answer to the frustration that many people feel. And I doubt that Angelos is any Martin Luther King, Jr., who was certainly no “blowhard”, but maybe I’m wrong on that too.

From a witness at Mondawin Mall. It is also a major transit center. Police reported 75 - 100 kids there, far less than on an ordinary day. These are kids that need the bus to get home, they are not in a carpool or driving themselves to and from school. Were the police agents provocateurs with their rumors of a purge?

Who came up with that great idea?

Baltimore was one of the biggest cities in the US that didn’t have court ordered busing in the 1970s. There are(were) 4 magnet high schools long before most places had magnet schools, so kids applied and could go to those schools. There are certainly neighborhood schools, but high school kids ride city buses so they can go wherever they can get in. Many student go to catholic schools. The public schools were heavily black, so court ordered busing made no sense as busing wasn’t going to integrate the public schools. I knew one person who went to public high school in Baltimore City who was white, and she went to one of the magnet schools.

Denver (now) also has little busing for high school kids. Students who qualify get city bus passes, and often kids travel across the city to attend a school with a program they like. My kids in California had no busing for high school, except those students who lived on the marine base. I think there was federal funding for them. My kids went in the district to their assigned school, we lived about 7 miles away by the highway (much longer if on surface streets) and they got no vouchers or transportation of any kinds.

One-armed paper hanger, out.
Johns Hopkins waitlist manager, in.

I got no sleep last night watching the coverage. It is so sad. Unfortunately, it wont be the last. There will be another shooting, and there will be more unrest. I do think the mayor is getting a bad rap. I think she didnt want to come in too heavy, as it incited folks in Ferguson, and because she gave legitimate protesters room, the knuckleheads took advantage.

Whats not getting out, is that Baltimore police have a Bill of Rights. They dont have to speak to anyone for 10 days after an incident. So people think nothing is happening and they cant force the cops to talk.

I am supposed to be there in a few weeks. Am rethinking whether I want to go. Will wait and see if it quiets down.

Baltimore is a large, spread out city with a population of over 620 thousand. Many, many parts of the city remain unaffected by the unrest. In a few weeks, I predict this thing will have long played out (at least I hope to God it is!). What part(s) of Baltimore are you scheduled to visit, jym?

I don’t think any of the riots have been in the touristy areas of the Inner Harbor or Fells Point area. I’ve seen some Google Map mashups showing some fires or incidents north of downtown in the Orleans Street area.

Wow. I don’t know how to even begin to express how wrong that sounds.

NoVaDad, maybe there wasn’t the same level of violence , but Camden Yards went on lockdown during an Oriole’s game the other night . I am not very familiar with Baltimore since I’ve only been there a dozen times , tops…but we took a wrong turn after leaving the Inner Harbor and need up in a really bad neighborhood very quickly. The things we saw happening in broad daylight, with young children nearby was shocking to me

Will be attending graduations at Hopkins and UMBC. And a party. Not sure where that will be held. But we arent staying downtown so thats not a worry.

My daughter lives near JHU and nothing has been happening there. UMBC is really outside the city. The downtown area near City Hall, Lexington Market and the Inner Harbor might be a problem. Farther north by Harbor East and Fells Point has been quiet.

ETA - Hampden will be fine too.

The mayor completely mishandled this. Giving them room to be violent? wth? She seemed half dead last night in the conference. The governor waited way too long to come out as well, but from what I understand, he had to wait for her to give the signal to bring in the national guard. However, back when the Orioles game had spectators waiting in the stadium Saturday night because it was getting out of hand, that was the day to institute curfews and call in for back up to calm things down. It would have been nice if the President and new attorney general could have done more than “monitor”.

I wouldn’t be planning a visit for the near future.
