That’s a good idea, I just got such bad vibes from their aid office that I kinda gave up. Hopefully things get sorted out, wish u all da best : )
i also got bad vibes, but I thought it was just me! they were very dismissive, which was really upsetting as a student who is honestly just trying to figure this out on my own. thank you, and i wish you the best as well!!: )
so dismissive. like whether we get aid or not could have huge impacts on our future, and they are treating it like some minor inconvenience… bad vibes indeed
yes!!! i was so surprised as every other aid office explained stuff in full and addressed my concerns. even my college counselor was confused as to why they replied the way they did. im not even sure if i should put the effort in if i just get rejected! i like the school a lot though so i probably still will lol
Unfortunately, if universities allowed families to avoid the NCP income disclosure by claiming an uncooperative NCP, many high-income parents would simply try to qualify for institutional need-based aid by refusing to disclose financials.
It’s not a good situation for students like you, where a NCP likely makes enough money to afford a higher payment but refuses to cooperate. From the school’s perspective, that is not much different than having married parents who can afford it but choose not to pay $70K/yr to send their child to an expensive private school.
It’s disappointing for you, but I think the issue is not Barnard’s FinAid’s office decision, but your NCP’s decision.
The good news is the vast majority of universities do not require the CSS profile. Also, some that do will approve your NCP waiver. Not all, but some. It sounds like you have some who have accepted your NCP waiver. Those will probably be your best options.
yeah i get what you’re saying and i understand the predicament in place, and it’s sad adults would take advantage of such a system.
funnily enough, i would probably get more aid if i included my NPCs info, as he claims he only gets money for social security and is retired. this is where the misinformation on his taxes comes in, as it’s pretty clearly not true. he is also a vet, and is old (not like in their 50s old, i’m talking in their 70s old. i have an interesting family situation), and i know sometimes those aspects can get you more aid.
i think my frustrations with the barnard office lay mainly within the fact that i haven’t lived with my NPC in almost two years, and haven’t seen him in person for that long, because he was mentally/emotionally abusive. i discussed this in my letter, and my therapist touched on it in hers as well.
i’m super grateful for the schools that have accepted the waiver though, and i’m glad i have those options. it’s just a tad irritating when you spend ~$100 to apply to a school for them to say they won’t consider your app without info i literally can’t give them. it’s an angering situation on all cylinders lol
but! my college counselors are trying to set up a zoom interview with the aid office, so i am hopeful something good will come of that.
Does it mean anything if Barnard recently asked to connect through Naviance/update contact info?
i think a lot of ppl got that so probably not
Do you guys think them approving my NCP WAiver is a good sign?
Since the financial aid and admission applications are usually separate from each other, I think it might just be the Financial Aid department processing that part of your application. I could be wrong though!! Good luck!!
Don’t know if Barnard will follow suit but saw on another thread that some CSS schools are dropping the NPC requirement.
Tysm!!
I would suggest waiting until you hear back about admission. My daughter was admitted ED to Barnard and had a similar situation. Once she was admitted, we were able to submit a comprehensive appeal letter with evidence that the head of financial aid reviewed. I think that it is difficult for the FA department to review in detail all of the requests coming in before offers go out. Be patient and then fully explain the situation. You may also want to provide any evidence you have of your NCP’s “documented” income. Meaning, if you have any documentation of what he has filed for taxes, documentation of income from divorce proceedings, etc., you could give that to Barnard to review.
I hope this helps.
thank you so much, your response definitely helped a lot!
So my application will still be considered? The response from the aid office made it seem like my application wouldn’t be considered until they received all of my financial aid and I’ve been freaking out. especially since my CP and my taxes were unable to be opened by the office, and I wasn’t able to email them until today because of some issues we were having.
Barnard feels like a long shot for me, but I would love the opportunity to attend, but obviously need aid to do so.
Congrats to your daughter, and thank you so much again!!
Hows everyone feeling? I’m getting a little nervous… but I have this gut feeling that everything will work out !
sooooo nervous!!
So excited to see you all on campus! We should make group chat soon! (manifesting! lol)
Currently speaking as if I’ve already gotten in to calm my nerves. hahaha
good luck to everyone tomorrow! remember everything works out in the end (what I keep telling myself)
I’m so nervous too! But I also know EVERYTHING happens for a reason, even if we don’t understand it in that moment. I am sending you all sooooo much love and luck. Whatever happens, we got this
