Makeup and skincare products are very personal. What works for one woman might not work for another.
@missypie has it right - don’t be 58 (actually I’m looking back at 58). People always thought I was quite a bit younger than I actually was until about 55 or 56 - then all at once the wrinkles, sags, and puffs started appearing in my mirror. I read a Facebook article about a 60+ model who is basically a minimalist so I took her advice and quit all hair color / highlights (still not too gray so looks more mousy brown - ughh). Dropped the mascara first and then over the next year faded out the eye shadows so I only wear brownish black eye liner on bottom which softens up pretty quickly and some light blush. Oh yes a liquid foundation that doesn’t dry to that age enhancing powder crap. It was amazing when I realized o was getting older all that makeup just looked like it was sitting on my face - like someone colored it up. When I was younger that mirror had everything blended and highlighted so all the colors looked like they should be where they were.
I love the new old hippie naturalist face - I don’t worry about having too much makeup on anymore.
@baseballmom I develped what I thought were age-related freckles on my lower legs. Went to my dermatologist for a check-up and learned the freckles were a skin condition called DSAP (google it for the full name–too long to spell out). There isnt an effective treatment right now–various drugs can hold it at bay. I have had some success with laser treatments.
I too wear less makeup than I did in my 30’s. I now use a tinted moisturizer in lieu of foundation and wear only a bone colored eyeshadow. Still use mascara and a swipe of lip gloss. For evening I will wear eyeliner and a more vibrant color on my lips. Perhaps some blush or bronzer in the winter months to give me a little more overall color.
One DD will only use Clinique mascara because it has no scent and works for her (I brought home some of their other mascara - several types, but she just liked the ‘basic’ one that they give away in their bonus product pack).
The other DD will use Lancome or whatever else I bring home.
I use the skin care. I have always had dry skin and have used good products on it since 9th grade, so have always used moisturizer creams. Use night creams and skin stuff 24/7 - my skin just soaks it up.
Good hair and good skin go a long way. Only if it is a big occasion will I put make up - low level is a little liquid makeup, face powder, blush, and lipstick.Maybe some day I will get back to adding eye make up too.
Hair color is professional level but can be bought at Sally’s Beauty Supply. As I have aged (and maybe some also due to chemo) I have needed a higher level of developer - years ago was at 20, then 30, now I mix 1/4 40 with 3/4 30 for the right lift. H applies it for me if kids are not home.
Color can be a very tricky thing for women - sis was #3 in color sales for her multi-state region which included Chicago. She did a lot of color correction with people - she definitely understood the chemistry, how to strip out the junk etc. Now permanent color is with a soy formula, but seems to work as well as the previous stuff.
I do think the estrogen was thinning my hair, but since I am on an estrogen blocker my hair is much fuller - I was estrogen positive cancer (estrogen fed my cancer).
@mom2collegekids I also have deep set eyes and oily skin, and I also have issues with my mascara smearing after a few hours, even if it’s waterproof. It makes me nuts to constantly wipe the mascara out from under my eyes. Right now I use Loreal’s waterproof one, but I’m very grumpy with it. My lashes are short and blonde, so I need something on them. I’m seriously considering using fake eyelashes, but I don’t want to look like a kardablablahian.
I find that setting all my makeup (even the mascara) with a translucent mineral powder buys me a few hours of smudge free eyes. Also, NARS primer on my eyes is fantastic, but it’s SO expensive I only use it when I’m going out and need the makeup to stay put without me fussing at it.
My 15 yo is fascinated by what happens to makeup on my face-she can do a simple cat eye liner on her eye in the morning and it’s still perfectly in place when she gets home from school. She’s got her dad’s perfect skin-no pores, not oily, with some adorable freckles. All she uses is a little liner on the top lid and boom she’s done.
My 17 yo does have my skin and deepset eyes, and is like, gee thanks mom. She uses mostly urban decay stuff, and has the same issues with smearing even with the more expensive makeup. Luckily she has long black lashes so rarely wears mascara.

I also wear an Olay BB or CC tinted moisturizer in lieu of foundation. It includes a 15 SPF, which is helpful. I mix it with a tiny bit of Burt’s Bees Radiance Body Lotion with Royal Jelly…because it has mica which corrects any dulling of the skin. The tube is huge (6 oz, fatter than a toothpaste tube) so it lasts forever…only mix in about a pea size. Royal Jelly includes essential amino acids.
If I’m in a hurry or want to set my make up, I use Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Correcting pressed powder http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/productdetail/face/pressed-powder/07308.html
^ this powder looks like you’re not wearing anything, but it corrects any discolorations. In fact, (shhh!..), when my boys were teens and if they had a break-out or redness from a zit, I would brush this over and the redness would go bye bye…and no one would know the wiser. lol…and I would do this on school picture day, too. ha! I swear that you could not tell that anything is on the face.
it’s also good to lightly brush on the décolleté to help with any sun damage look.
has anyone tried hyaluronic acid?
I just got an order from Amazon and am trying it. I have no idea if I bought the best one. For someone like @SOSConcern it may be very helpful for dry skin.
I’m focusing mostly one the thin skin areas…neck, top of hands, and around the mouth.
MotherofDragons, I had oily skin when I was younger and I used to have a problem with mascara smearing. I found that waterproof mascaras smeared more, and I realized that substances are soluble either in water or in oil. Waterproof mascaras must be designed to be soluble in oil (rather than water), and so it makes sense that they would smear more from contact with skin oil. I’ve avoided waterproof mascara since then and had fewer problems.
About thinning eyebrows - I’ve just ordered a product, RapidBrow, that is supposed to increase hair growth. There are many positive reviews and youtube demonstrations. There is a companion product, RapidLash, that works on lashes, but some people have reddening of eyes or eyelids from it. (Probably the same product, but the brow area is less sensitive.)
RapidBrow - I need that! Will be waiting for your review!
Is it simply Latisse? I would use Latisse except that there is a possibility of permanent eye change color. I have a fairly unique blue-green eye color (the kind that changes with what I wear) and I wouldn’t want to risk that!
@HarvestMoon1 which brand of tinted moisturizer so you use?
@hayden I’m not @harvestmoon1 but there are many tinted moisturizers on the market. Some are the BB and CC tinted creams. Often the tints are simply Fair to Light…Light to Med…Med to Dark…because they are relatively sheer, more colors aren’t needed.
I have 3 different Olay tinted moisturizers…one is a BB Fresh Effects and one is CC Olay Total Effects 7 and one is called Olay Complete with 48 hr hydration…all are SPF 15. I also have a L’oreal BB called Silky Sheer…that is 30 SPF and is water-resistant for 80 minutes.
I really don’t notice a difference with any of them…they’re all fine with me. No negatives.
@hayden I use an organic brand manufactured in Hungary called Eminence. I stumbled upon it at a spa about 5 years ago and have been hooked ever since. It’s also 25 SPF which I like. It comes in a couple of shades but I have settled on the Vanilla Latte which is perfect for my skin tone. I used to pay $50 for a small bottle that only lasted about 10 weeks but lately Amazon is carrying it for $38 per bottle.
@Pizzagirl I use Latisse and I have green eyes. I’ve used it for a couple of years no eye color change. It does bring back your lashes, I love it.
My favorite mascara is Benefit They’re Real. Waterproof and doesn’t smudge.
Apparently I have a BB cream, tinted moisturizer problem.
The key for all of them is to use very little, I moisturize first and then use a little dab.
Inexpensive: Aveeno clear completion BB cream.
Very sheer: origins vita zing SPF 15
Urban Decay naked skin BB cream, I really like this one but the coverage is a bit Dewey.
Very favorite: it cosmetics CC+. This is more of a light foundation than the others. The coverage is more matte than some of the others. I can’t begin to say how great this CC cream is.
I use all 4. If I’m going out its the IT CC cream. The Aveeno is darker, so that’s for the summer. The urban decay is nice when I want a no makeup look.
All have SPF but since I use so little I always put another SPF moisturizer underneath.
@Pizzagirl I know that you’re concerned about Latisse because of possible eye color change.
Have you tried putting castor oil (100% pure, organic) on your lashes at night? I haven’t yet tried it, but am going to.
I too have deep set eyes and started having a problem with my mascara smudging horribly under my eyes. It was happening with my favorite Chanel as well as the drug store brands I’ve never had a problem with before. I switched up my moisturizers, etc to see if it would stop and nothing helped. So I went to the Chanel counter and asked for their advice. They suggested “tubing” mascara and sent me home with this one from Trish McEvoy.

This stuff is great! It took me a week to get used to the small brush applicator but this mascara really stays on. The tubing technology was new to me. It forms a tube around your lashes and doesn’t budge or flake, even the couple times I slept in it. The tubes kind of slip off whole with plain warm water and are very easy to remove.
Although I’m very happy with this one, I’m going to experiment with some of the other brands too. Sephora sells one called Blinc that gets very good reviews and is a bit less expensive.
