Being a good houseguest..at your kid's place

Peace. And btw my “other post” had nothing to do with you. Lol. Love how the anonymity of a message board can propagate bad feelings

After I posted my response, I thought about it more. I am annoyed when my mom cleans my house or makes comments about my housekeeping. She also strips the sheets even though I ask her not to, doesn’t listen to how I do things and that I will get to it later (or not) lol! I am not a bad housekeeper btw. I am very aware of not being critical to my D and being respectful of her.

Now my H and my S, they do not care. They do not think that how they clean or keep the house is any reflection on them. And if someone did any cleaning for them, they would be happy and wonder why you wouldn’t accept help. But then they would never be concerned or notice how clean or messy a house was.

Shellz, I amend my advice. Sounds like the roommates won’t even be there. If they notice that the bathroom is cleaner, they will think that the cleaning fairy came and be happy. Instead of being grossed out by the kitchen and bathroom, clean it so you feel comfortable.

Thanks, deb922. Good advice. And I agree about not stripping beds unless you get the ok. I offer and comply with what our hosts desire. My own mom was fastidious in her housecleaning, and I’ve never felt up to her level. She never made comments however, and was always a wonderful, helpful guest. I hope to be like her, in sensing what would be helpful, and what is too intrusive.

Glad to know that my boys are normal. They’d be happy to have a cleaner place, but wouldn’t blink if I left it dirty.

The cleaning fairy…yep, that sounds about right! I do wish she’d stop by here more often ;-)

I had the pleasure of doing this once, a few years ago. Situation was a bit different, as she was sharing a 300 sq ft studio with another…a guy (friend, nothing else). They each had lofted beds with desk below, there was a full kitchen, and a full bath. The guy was leaving for a week and offered me his bunk (I live across the country). I did stock their pantry, including cleaning supplies and paper goods. But the one thing I did that I think really made a difference was I left each day (5 days) when D left for school or work, met her at the end of her day, and then went home with her. So I didn’t dilly dally around their pad. They were both tidy and clean, so no issues there. I did make her a favorite dinner one time, but the rest of the time I took all cues from her. Actually it was the first time she and I hadn’t squabbled in a few years (that push-me-pull-you squabble stuff, nothing major). I fully respected that I was at her home. And it was sweet. A very lovely time.
