Berlin. The new "It" city.

I know several friends and friends of friends of the kiddos who have moved or are moving to Berlin. Is this a recent trend or something thats been a thing for awhile?

One of my kids showed me this which had us giggling: http://imgc-cn.artprintimages.com/images/P-473-488-90/92/9214/L4P1500Z/posters/bruce-eric-kaplan-he-moved-to-berlin-to-pursue-something-creative-he-would-be-bad-at-here-new-yorker-cartoon.jpg

Newly hip? Berlin has always been hip. Dear spouse lived in Berlin for many years during the Cold War and regrets not buying property there when the Wall fell-- real estate prices were dirt cheap.

My daughter and her band just played several gigs in Berlin, and stayed with a German band for two weeks. A very edgy and hip city.

@doschicos: didn’t check the comic until after I posted. I hope that doesn’t apply to my D, but it’s hilarious!

I haven’t noticed it. Austin on the other hand…

Though if an overseas city became the new hotspot I wouldn’t necessarily know. I don’t know people moving overseas to work.

Agreed. As my history books, and my several cast recordings ofCabaret, tell me, Berlin was hip even prior to WW2. It’s certainly one of my favorite cities.

We visited Berlin this Christmas and LOVED IT.

Yes, as several of you have mentioned, Berlin has a long history of hipness. It’s either having a new resurgence, or most likely, my kids are just at the age where their friends are discovering it and I am seeing it through new eyes.

Lol, hilarious how our kids, when they grow older, discover their parents aren’t as clueless as they thought.

Berlin has always been hip, but what seems newer to me is the number of American kids who want to move there for a few years after college. I don’t hear about kids wanting to move to Paris or Prague; it is all about Berlin. And Copenhagen, for some reason!

Must be a regional thing… nobody talks about Berlin here. It’s australia or new zealand.

The hip people don’t talk about Australia or New Zealand…

Berlin was always edgy. Been that way for a long time. I haven’t been there for almost 30 years, but it was great fun in my time.

We went there last Christmas, too. Had a great time. Lots of young people.

The hip people might talk about Berlin, but when it comes to moving, they migrate to San Francisco! After experiencing how expensive life in SF is, they move to Seattle. :D.

'I remember when David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Brian Eno lived there back in '77. It’s a bit more tame now but still a wonderful city full of creative people. When we were back there in April I thought that if I was in my 20’s it’s where I would want to live.

Enjoyed our visit there. Interesting city!

Are are these people learning German before they go? My daughter has absolutely no interest in learning German, so I doubt she would follow this trend, although she is very eager to live abroad for awhile. She’s looking at Amsterdam possibly since we’ve been there a few times and she knows people there. Still haven’t been to Berlin though. Now I’m very curious and want to visit!

One can certainly get by visiting Berlin knowing only English, although if one chooses to stay there for a while, knowing the language would better acclimate oneself to the culture.

I guess we’re not “hip” out here… oh darn! :stuck_out_tongue:
