What’s the best place for first year freshman students to stay? I heard Elicott is the best esp. for freshman as it allows for more of a social experience and it houses tons of freshman. Is this true, is Elicott the best place?
Depends on who you are and what you’re looking for.
plenty of social interaction with other freshman would be ideal
Yea, Ellicott is good for that. have fun
I’m just a parent who spent time touring Governors and dropping off/picking up my son, but it always seemed to me that there was decent interaction between students. I’ve heard of kids transferring out of Ellicott because it was all social, all the time.
Hi,
As a UB student. I’ve lived in both Ellicott and Governors. In terms of the “better place to live,” it truly depends upon what your looking for. Ellicott is by far the largest residential complex at UB, containing more than 3,200 students, containing many classrooms. In contrast, Governors is smaller, containing about 800 students. Most rooms in Ellicott are indeed bigger than the rooms in governors.
In terms of dinning, Ellicott, is superior with a food court containing 7 different places to eat, a state-of-the-art dinning hall (C3) and a convenience store. One of the places in the Ellicott Food Court is open 24/7 Thursday-Saturday (Sizzles). Governors has only 2 places to eat, the dinning hall and The Cellar. Additionally, it has Teddy’s, a convenience store, but unlike Elliott’s, Teddy’s is open only for a few hours during the night.
As far as the more social experience, that is high variable. It truly depends on the people on your floor. Contrary to belief, Governors may be more social in some regards, as there are lounges nearly everywhere you look. I found it more difficult to make friends in Ellicott, as opposed to my time in governors (I lived in Ellicott the second semester). The most social places in governors are the 2nd and 3rd floors. Again, its purely subjective on your ability to be social with others, as well as your peers.Personally, I would try Ellicott first, and if you don’t like it, transfer to Governors. Ultimately, there are too many variables to crown one more social than the other. Overall, I would say the Ellicott is the "better " facility , however Governors also has many perks too, such as being close to the academic spine
Can you still dorm in Ellicott if you are in the Honor’s Program?
Yes, I believe you can. But most honors students live in governers though
I posted this question in another thread as well… But my son just committed to UB for the fall. We sent in his deposits on 4/11. Reading he may only get into a dorm on the south campus at this point? He sent in a (late) application to the honors college and will apply for honors dorm if accepted. He would also like first year special interest housing of honors doesn’t work out. Didn’t realize we might be waaay too late. Any ideas??
jboysmom, did he ever hear back from the Honors College?
