Best colleges for undecided major???

Right now I have no idea what I what to do for a career. So what schools out there are very accepting of undecided students and help students truly find what they are meant to do for a living?

Other factors: I want to go to a school with a big sports program AND I don’t want to go more than 15 hrs away from new York

Hi,

I think almost all schools will accept an undecided major, so that’s not a big issue.

However, you probably should pick a larger school because they typically offer the broadest choices of majors.

It shouldn’t be hard to find a school with a big sports program within 15 hrs of NY. That is practically the eastern half of the US…maybe not including Florida.

What are your stats and how much will your parents pay each year? Those two factors will likely determine where you should apply.

Wisconsin. Nearly 200 majors most of which are top tier. Top tier sports in Football, Basketball and Hockey and ranked one of top college sports towns. No need to choose a major until later depending on school. You just apply to overall university and majors later–either after freshman or soph year depending.

I’ll go ahead and recommend UNC-Chapel Hill. Top 5 public university with plenty of majors and concentrations to choose from. Great football team and elite basketball program, in one of the nation’s best college towns. Also is one of the few public universities that meets financial need for OOS students. Just a 12-hour drive and 50-minute plane flight from New York.

Wisconsin is also a great choice-very similar to UNC, but both schools have their own unique flavors. Michigan would be a good place to look at, as well.

I thought about UNC, but there is no way i would get in. I’m smart, but not that smart.

The only thing about Wisconsin and Michigan is that I’m skeptical about going somewhere even colder than where i am now

Boston College, Syracuse, and Notre Dame are probably your best bets unless you want to go down to state schools.

I’d recommend a few other state flagships then. UGA, UT-Austin, Penn State. Also, Pittsburgh may be worth a look.

Any major sports conference state university should fill your needs, just be careful about lower acceptance rates for OOS students. Depending on your stats places like Virginia, Michigan, UNC, UCLA and Texas can be very tough admits for OOS. Go through the lists of the Big 10, ACC, SEC, PAC-10, Mountain West and Big 12 conferences, that should give you more than enough choices.

Oh, unless you’re really afraid of flying, putting a limit of 15 hours from NY really only eliminates South Africa, Asia and Australia.

I agree. You should try all of the BCS conferences that have schools in the area you want to go to school (ACC, Big East and Big Ten will be closest to NY).

There’s been many great suggestions, but has Smacktime indicated that his parents will pay for whatever school he gets in?

Many/most of these schools won’t work if money is an issue.

Schools like notre dame and Syracuse are off my list just because of the high cost, but most public schools are very good suggestions
