Hi all, so I’m not going to really get into it, as I really want to talk shit on both the students (it feels like a shitty city high school) and the board because they can’t even agree to make a fiscally sound decision without arguing for hours, which basically means tHEY DONT DO THEIR JOB. so to say the least I’ve been going to CCSF and I’m severely disappointed. Why would I want to pay an institution whose faculty board only cares about preserving their tenure and post-teaching benefits while the rest of the institution is falling to shit and may not even be accredited? (I heard a large portion of ccsf’s money has to go to part-time retirees with full benefits, rumors like that just bother me ) See? I can start ranting and ranting. The instructors weren’t too bad, although I bet if you didn’t try you would easily take a class from a senile professor who flicks through a boring outdated slideshow.
I’m a little sensitive to this environment and I can’t stand studying here, does anyone know what community colleges have better atmospheres for ambitious students? I understand community college isn’t the ideal place for aspiring intellectuals, but I want to go to a place that has moderately smart students, good programs especially in science/math/history/english, instructors that engage your mind often(never happened in class here), a reasonable amount of political diversity and representation of beliefs.
Basically, I want to go to a college and have the experience speak for itself. I went to Salt Lake Community College in Utah and I was way more satisfied with it than CCSF.
I heard Foothills College is a good college, can anyone confirm? hopefully there are other suggestions? I’m looking for maybe a suburban CC, one person who hated CCSF as well said that would be one’s best chance
I would try and apply to a University of California but I’m not sure my high school grades would allow it. Thanks all.
Once you start accumulating college units, you will need to go the transfer route and apply while a sophomore, to start junior year. Your high school stats are not looked at.
It’s fine to attend multiple CCCs so perhaps that’s what you’ll have to do to find what you’re looking for, along with browsing RateMyProfessors.
Wow soupie, that’s disappointing to hear your experience at CCSF. I myself have been going to city for 2.5 years and have had pretty much the opposite experience as yourself.
CCSF is one of the largest community colleges in the state, so it has all types of students, those that are less smart and less driven, and those that are extremely smart and extremely driven. I am a part of the AGS honors society which has chapters in almost all of the community colleges in California. We just had our statewide convention last weekend and our chapter (omega chapter) did extremely well. We won an award for each category we entered in, including winning the award for best cheer for the second year in a row.
In addition to this, all three of our members that were nominated for a scholarship received one at this event. To put that in perspective, they gave out about 20 scholarships in 3 categories, plus a couple one off scholarships, and each chapter, of which I would say there was about 30, nominated one person for each category. Most schools did not receive any scholarships and we recieved one in each category, so I can attest that yes, we have some of the smartest, brightest and most driven students in the state here at CCSF.
Also you express interest in attending a CCC that has good programs, and I suggest before you bolt from City you take a look at the course offerings at the surrounding schools. since City is so huge we have a depth and breadth of classes that few other community colleges can rival.
Keep these things in mind and remember that you are in community college. It’s not going to be perfect, and city college definitely has its fair share of issues, but you might be careful to write of CCSF as no good before you compare it to other schools.
I can only speak from my experience and I can say of all the classes I have taken here I have only had like 3 teachers where I thought they weren’t really giving it their best, or were not at a level that I would have liked. Most of my teachers have been extremely good, and many of them have been utterly fantastic. I can’t say enough good things about the teachers I have had the privilege of working with here at City
Look for the community college that has the best coverage of the courses for your target majors at your target UCs and CSUs. http://www.assist.org can help you.
I’m a Foothill College student. Don’t go there if you are planning to transfer. The staff there are not helpful at all and they are really rude except for the ones who works at the cafetaria and library. They always treat you like you are such a burden for disturbing them. If you search for foothill reviews, even the people who gives it 4-5stars will mention how rude the workers are. They also never reply to your emails! The building is also not that nice. Classes are often full because they give priority for new students. Most of the professors have very low rating.
Unless you are an expert and knows exactly what classes you have to take, what major you want to pursue and what to do to transfer to university, DON’T GO TO FOOTHILL!
I go to Las Positas Community College in Livermore, CA. I think this CC is great! The staff are really there for the students and they have really been helpful in helping me get transferred. The professors are very kind, just check out RateMyProfessor first. I strongly believe LPC is a great CC for anyone. Check out their website
I’d recommend against the Peralta College System in the eastbay. They’ve made my life living hell with their incompetent staff. I’ve heard great things about DVC in pleasant hill and chabot college in hayward.
