Haha, I made a pot of chili tonight too! When my kids were little they always loved that my mom had a pot ready when we visited.
May have been said upthread, but I like to have food ready that can be eaten on arrival and the next day or so … fruit, cheese, crackers/bread, sweets, deviled eggs and the aforementioned chili w/ fixings.
I made American Chop Suey last night…you know…the single dish meal with tomato sauce, hamburger, onion, elbow Mac, and some Italian spices. It was so delicious…comfort food like Mac and cheese.
Surely, he must have asked about some foods which may or may not contain hidden gluten, since not all gluten containing foods are obvious (e.g. “does this dish have soy sauce in it?”).
In any case, this is an odd thread in that apparently the OP knows little about what the guests like to eat, and apparently prefers asking here instead of asking them.
@ucbalumnus I’d actually eat all of that stuff except durian and I’m not fond of insects though I’ve eaten them. But I take your point.
When I can, I ask my guests if there is anything they dislike or can’t eat. When my nephew, who was recently diagnosed with celiac was here, you better believe we cleaned up the kitchen, put away all the wooden cutting boards and spoons and bought certified gluten free ingredients.
It’s very hard to please a large crowd with just one dish. I think a stew and a salad with lots of vegetables would probably do for most groups.
