This is in no way intended to be a joke. Just looking for some comparison between the two law schools in the state…Bowen at UALR and the Law Center at UA-Fayetteville. Looks like theyre ranked about evenly in USNEWS as far as tier, average GPA, and average LSAT are concerned. Please take this seriously and resist all desires to poke fun at Arkansas or the perceived stupidity of the residents of the state.

i would suggest looking at where attorneys at the major firms (or types of firms) in the cities in which you would want to end up come from. alumni networking can be very helpful in the job market. here’s a link for a site that is a lawyer directory – http://www.martindale.com/ – enter the info about the types of firms you think you might be interested in and then look thru the listing that come up – they often will have links to info about the attorneys at a firm and you can then see where they graduated from. (i am jumping to the conclusion that if you are looking at these two school you are interested in staying in arkansas upon graduation from law school.)

another important resource to check – if you know any lawyers practicing in arkansas – ask their opinion – they may know more practical distinctions (eg, if one favors one type of career path, etc.)

good luck

I remember snickering inwardly in 1980 when a friend from Arkansas told me that his governor (some guy named Clinton) would someday be president of the US. I won’t make that mistake again.

I’m a Democrat, but find Huckabee to be one of the more interesting candidates in his party.

If they’re ranked about the same, I’d chose the one in the city where I wanted to live.

i attend Huckabee’s alma mater actually

do you absolutely need to stay in arkansas? why don’t you take a look at duke, vanderbilt, emory, etc.

i’m planning on going into public interest and cost/scholarships becomes a huge factor in the decision. plus, i have no need or desire to leave the state.

I read on the LSAC website that incoming UALR 1L’s have a slightly higher average cumulative gpa and LSAT scores. So, by that standard, Bowen is the ‘better’ law school. I’m actually an undergrad at UA- Fayetteville, but I don’t know if I want to go to law school here. I would like to leave the state if I can.

A word of advice-- I took a poli. sci. class with a law professor here. His name is Steve Sheppard. He’s really smart, funny in an offbeat way, and a tough grader. He even went to Oxford (University College) and Columbia for his law degrees! He’s teaching an International Law class this Fall, and was involved in drafting the Iraqi Constitution. If you end up coming to Fayetteville, definitely try to take at least one class with him. You won’t regret it.

I don’t know anything about UALR though, having never even set foot in the city of Little Rock… good luck!

Now that I think about it, there is another reason you might be better off going to UALR. If you want to do public interest, maybe you should consider a joint degree program at the Clinton School of Public Service? I don’t know if they have one, but it might be something worth considering…

they do have a dual MPS/JD
