It’s not exactly a liberal arts college, but you might want to check out the BSoF (Bachelor of Science in Music and an Outside Field) degree at Indiana University. You get all the benefits that a regular performance/jazz/whatever major would get, including ensembles, lessons with faculty, etc, AND you get 27 credits to study whatever field you choose.

It is exactly like a double major, except it only takes 4 years (!) and you don’t have to do two sets of general education classes (you just do the ones required of music majors). I am a BSoF in clarinet performance and arts administration, but you can have any combination you like. Trumpet/business, flute/psychology… jazz/history!!!

I just read through almost all of this and I was very surprised to find that Lawrence University hadn’t been mentioned once, but then again I read only almost all of it haha. Lawrence has a great double degree program between its conservatory and college of liberal arts, where you can major in the sciences but they only offer the BA (and obviously the BM). You could also double major there with a BA in music performance and whatever you please. The only downside to them is that they don’t have jazz majors, jut a jazz emphasis for performance majors, which requires both a jazz and classical audition and coursewise turns out to be kind of halfway between your average jazz and classical performance majors.
