In terms of:
- newest, most modern looking buildings
- old brick and stone, gothic buildings ( you know, like the building type that you see in most east cost/older schools )

In terms of:

Ha…this is going to be an interesting thread…Many of the UC/CSUs are rather ugly (building-wise) with contemporary style buildings.

If you want that traditional look (gothic, Georgian, etc) - go east or south dear student.

Sjs, sds, cpp

CSUN has a lot of new modern buildings - esp. recently since the '94 quake…
New modern science building:

New performing arts center:
[Campaign for the Valley Performing Arts Center](http://www.campaign.valleyperformingartscenter.org/)
New campus recreation facility:
[Student Recreation Center](http://usu.csun.edu/rec/)

A lot of campus buildings have been in films.

UC campuses don’t have many buildings in the gothic style. Berkeley has quite a few in the Greek Classical Renaissance style in the core of campus:
Doe Library: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8e/UCB-University_Doe_Library_north.jpg
Wheeler Hall: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Wheeler_Hall--UC_Berkeley--Panoramic.jpg
South Hall is the oldest building on campus and looks real cool: http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/files/southhall2007.jpg
Stephens Hall is “neo-Gothic”:
http://farm2.static.■■■■■■■■■■/1253/764897956_9c2677cbbb.jpg

I forgot, Bowles Hall at Berkeley is also in the Gothic style:
http://berkeley.edu/photos/buildings/source/image/bowles.jpg

UCLA: Royce Hall <a href=“cityzine.com - This website is for sale! - cityzine Resources and Information.”>cityzine.com - This website is for sale! - cityzine Resources and Information.; and Powell Library http://siggy.chem.ucla.edu/Visit_UCLA/Visit%20UCLA%20BIG%20PICTs/Powell%20Library%201.JPG are the center of campus, and flank a plateau which underlays the higher elevation of the campus. Beyond those two anchor buildings, other early builidings like Moore Hall and Kerkhoff hall, Men’s and Women’s gymnasiums (no longer used as gyms) are of a similar style. Architectural styles after WWII are, as one might expect, much more utilitarian, less expensive to construct, and less inspiring.

San Diego State has a beautiful campus.

UC Santa Cruz is so built into the Redwood trees that you cannot see any building more than 100 yards away.

UC Berkeley is probably the most beautiful of the nine campuses, with UCLA and UC Santa Cruz vying for second place depending on whether one favors inspiring hardscape, or landscape.

UC Santa Barbara’s natural setting on a palisade overlooking the ocean is beautiful, but the buildings themselves are mostly pedestrian.

CSU Chico has a very pretty campus overall.

I have to admit, when I hear people say a CA state campus is beautiful, I think oh, poor thing has never left the state:)

^2college, Could be worse. You could go to school at UNLV in Nevada!

I have to admit, when I hear people say a CA state campus is beautiful, I think oh, poor thing has never left the state

LOL…so true. I love my beloved California, but it’s idea of beautiful (public) universities is almost silly once you’ve visited campuses in other parts of this country.

Part of the problem is that many of the Calif public U’s aren’t very old, so they don’t have that old traditional architecture “look” that has been followed when new buildings are constructed on campus.

*I forgot, Bowles Hall at Berkeley is also in the Gothic style:
http://berkeley.edu/photos/buildings...age/bowles.jpg*

Ha…looks like a place where they hold prisoners until they’re taken to their doom.
Not beautiful in the least.

I agree.

[san diego state university - Google Search](http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=imghp&q=san+diego+state+university&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=f&oq=&gs_rfai=)

UCLA’s Kerckhoff Hall is gorgeous
http://www.biochemistry.ucla.edu/biochem/Faculty/SClarke/images/kerchoff.gif

UCLA’s Powell Library is just as beautiful on the inside as the outside
http://www.onlinecollege.org/wp-content/uploads/Powell%20Library.jpg

The west coast just doesn’t get any respect, and here’s just one more example!:)

Gothic style is very strong and foreboding. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Berkeley has different styles (and I’ll admit some ugly buildings)…but the “classical core” does have that old traditional college feeling.

Here are some good photo collections of all UC campuses:
[Atkinson Photographic Archive](http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/uchistory/archives_exhibits/campus_planning/atkinson_archive/index2.html)

This part gives a good sense of the Berkeley campus overall:
http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/uchistory/archives_exhibits/campus_planning/atkinson_archive/ucb/campus.html

I consider both UCLA and UC Santa Cruz better looking than Berkeley’s campus. People are more prone to say Berkeley has the nicest campus simply because its most prestigious and people completely overlook Santa Cruz because its not prestigious.

I find Berkeley’s Neo Classical Revival rather pedestrian. There are a LOT of Neo Classical Revival buildings around the US, especially government buildings and they all look a whole lot more professionally built. Berkeley’s Neo Classical often turns out to be a box embellished with columns. -.-

Here’s a picture of UCLA’s Kaufmann.
[Kaufman Hall - University of California Los Angeles](http://www.you-are-here.com/building/kaufman.html)

Cheaply designed?!! Do you not see the detail in Wheeler hall here?:

Check out Hearst Memorial Gym and its marble swimming pool…

You want to talk about cheaply designed, I give you UCLA’s Pauley Pavillion:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Pauley_Pavilion,_exterior.JPG

Here’s a picture of UCLA’s Kaufmann.
[Kaufman Hall - University of California Los Angeles](http://www.you-are-here.com/building/kaufman.html)

A sore attempt at a traditional campus look with mission-style influences…replete with candy cane stripes. OMG

^You have UCLA confused with Stanford. UCLA is Italian Romanesque architecture. Stanford is using Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. Kaufmann doesn’t look like a mission because it isn’t supposed to look like a mission. We already have one church-style building on the campus (Royce), we don’t need another.

It is cheaply designed. -.-

It’s going under heavy renovation.
http://www.today.ucla.edu/portal/ut/artwork/5/8/0/9/0/158090/North_exterior_at_night-prv.jpg

The bill will be absurdly high relative to just demolishing it and building a new stadium but fans insist on keeping Pauley.

Wheeler is the better one and Doe and Hilgrad are the worse ones. Even then, Wheeler is still just a box with a small tower and I prefer state capitol buildings such as the one in Sacramento.

http://www.elcivics.com/state-lessons/images/sacramento-capitol-building.jpg

Doe is the most overwhelmingly prominent and it is the one that will pop up in people’s heads when someone says “Berkeley”.

While I admire the tiles, the building itself is unremarkable. To be honest, I could even confuse it for one of the slightly upper class residences here in the Los Angeles suburbs.

Fair enough, sentiment.

Valley Life Sciences is also very detailed:
http://www.berkeley.edu/photos/buildings/vlsb.jpg
http://farm4.static.■■■■■■■■■■/3146/2771983694_927fed4256_o.jpg

Sproul is sort of your box with columns:
http://farm4.static.■■■■■■■■■■/3104/2748943720_1b97bb51f7_z.jpg

Ugliest building on campus is Eshelman hall, Evans Hall and MLK Student Union:
http://dashboard.berkeley.edu/building/img/1798.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/1e/Evans_Hall_UCB_From_Sather_Tower_2007.JPG/300px-Evans_Hall_UCB_From_Sather_Tower_2007.JPG
http://berc.berkeley.edu/system/files/UCB_7_rf.jpg

Fortunately, long term plans are to replace those monstrosities:
[UCB New Century Plan : Strategic Goals](http://www.cp.berkeley.edu/ncp/goals/index.html)
[UCB New Century Plan : Area E](http://www.cp.berkeley.edu/ncp/portfolio/areae.html#top)

This statement implies you’ve never stepped foot on the Berkeley campus. Wheeler Hall has no tower. That is Sather Tower/Campanile in the picture background. One of the tallest and best clock towers in the world.
http://www.planetware.com/i/photo/sather-tower-campanile-berkeley-ca610.jpg

And when people think of signature images of Berkeley, they usually think of Sather Tower or Sather Gate…not Doe:
