Best Method for Self-Studying?

I’m not talking about studying for an AP test or any other class. Rather, for a topic outside of school one’s interested in. For me, it’s Neuroscience. I have plenty of books on neuroanatomy and the processes of the brain, but am unable to retain a good amount of information as a result of the lack of testing/worksheets/etc.

So my question is, how should I go about learning this? Obviously devoting my time to it, but has anyone found methods for self-studying a subject?

Using [MIT OCW](Search | MIT OpenCourseWare | Free Online Course Materials) resources (e.g. lectures, assignments, exams) couldn’t hurt if you want some sort of self-assessment.
