best theatre cities in TX

I would like to major i theatre, in college but I am afraid that it would be like ending up a dead end waitress job if I major i theatre. What cities would be best to major i theatre, if you wanted to end up a stage actor/ actress?

Do you want to know which colleges in TX are the best in theater? SMU, TCU, Texas State, Baylor, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, UT come to mind immediately. OR Are you asking where you might be able to find work after graduation? Dallas/Ft Worth, Austin, Houston

I’ve said in other threads that in this day and age it’s very common for people to change careers. You can go and get an undergraduate degree in theatre, try out an acting career for a while, then if you decide it isn’t going anywhere you can go and get a graduate degree or other training in some completely different field and start a completely different career. Stage theatre in the United States seems to be concentrated in New York and Chicago, maybe with Minneapolis following behind. These are good places to be to develop the contacts you would need as a stage actor. And there are other “theatre cities” in other countries as well.

For paid theatre work, your best bets are going to be Houston and Dallas/Ft. Worth. Austin has an amazing theatre scene, but very few paid opportunities. If you are also interested in tv and film, then Austin has many paid opportunities for that type of work.

Dallas does have good professional theaters (Dallas Theater Center, Kitchen Dog, Theatre Three, Watertower, etc) but I don’t know any young actors (under 40) who are able to make a living in Dallas just by acting. Even in the “theater meccas” of New York, Chicago and LA, young actors will typically need some sort of day job. Of course, this day job can be theater related.

Houston also has a great number of Theaters and theater groups. I do know of a couple of “kids” 30 and under who are employed here in Houston in acting. I do know that both have other odd jobs on the side, but that is pretty typical. They are not being supported by their parents.

One is travelling to NYC and Chicago to audition. Now that he has built up his equity points, he is hoping to find jobs there to move ( he has never been a fan of this weather, he want to live where it snows).
